Our Editor's Take

All Things Tudor - The Podcast explores many aspects of the Tudor period of British history. Historian and author Deb Hunter hosted the 54-episode series. She interviewed experts about the Tudor period's fashion, art, and music. Deb also discussed the Tudor monarchy and shared stories about famous society figures. The podcast began in 2022 and ended in February 2023. Sadly, Deb passed away later that year after fighting cancer for several years.

The Tudor period began in 1485 and ended in 1603. Tudor was the family's name, and they were of Welsh origin. Many British sovereigns reigned during that time, including King Henry VIII. Several episodes of All Things Tudor focus on the famous monarch and his six wives. Deb discusses Henry's eventful reign with historian and educator Jackson van Uden. They also assess the king's tyrannical nature.

The host has a detailed discussion about Catherine of Aragon with art and cultural historian Dr. Emma Cahill Marron. In an episode about Anne Boleyn's life, Deb speaks with Alison Palmer. Alison is the head curator at Hever Castle, Anne's childhood home. In another episode, Deb meets with Alicia Mintz, host of the podcast Trashy Divorces. Together, they discuss each of Henry's wives.

In "Tudor History as Pop Culture with Allison Keene," the host talks with the Paste magazine editor about the Tudor family in entertainment. This includes everything from the TV show The Tudors to Broadway's Six.

The podcast includes discussions about many other famous characters from the Tudor period. Listeners can expect to learn about Queen Elizabeth I, of course. But the show also discusses Mary, Queen of Scots, Richard III, and Catherine de Medici.

The passion Deb had for the Tudor period is evident in every episode. All Things Tudor - The Podcast may interest fans of history podcasts. Those who share Deb's enthusiasm for the Tudors might also enjoy it.

E53: The Femme Fatale Summit: French Mistresses

E53: The Femme Fatale Summit: French Mistresses
What caused the juxtaposition from bedmate to power player? Monarchs in medieval Europe had extraconjugal sexual partners. What about the Tudors? Why was it only in France that a royal mistress could become a political power player?  This unique episode of All Things Tudor explores this phenomenon with Drs Tracy and Christine Adams, and we take a look at how a special place at court was developed for the royal mistress.  A new way of political influence developed - in the form of an intelligent, charismatic woman - one who usually became the royal mistress. Diane de Poitiers is a prime example of this power player.  This podcast will appeal to anyone interested in the history of women and royalty, gender studies, and Anne Boleyn. Dr Tracy Adams is Professor of French in the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics at the University of Auckland. She is the author of three books, including Christine de Pizan and the Fight for France, also published by Penn State University Press. Dr Christine Adams is Professor of History at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She is the author or co-editor of four books, including A Taste for Comfort and Status: A Bourgeois Family in Eighteenth-Century France, also published by Penn State University Press. E44: The Afterlife of Mary Queen of Scots
In this episode of All Things Tudor, Dr Steven Reid and Anne Dulau join Deb as they discuss the charismatic Mary, Queen of Scots. Why has she captivated us, what was her role in the history of Scotland and England, and how was she entwined with Tudor history?  Why is Mary such a figure of endless debate and fascination, and what does that say about Scotland's ever-evolving relationship with the 'daughter of debate'?  Mary Queen of Scots was an active ruler of Scotland for just six years (1561-1567) yet her reign has attracted more attention and debate than that of any other monarch in Scottish History. Catch The Hunterian exhibit that explores the life and afterlife of Mary, and take the free Future Learn course. Free FutureLearn course: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/the-life-and-afterlife-of-mary-queen-of-scots This course will provide an overview of Mary's life, reign and legacy. It begins with an overview of renaissance and reformation Scotland, and its relationships with Catholic Europe and its closest neighbour England. It then looks in depth at Mary's life - her time in France as the French Queen, her Scottish reign, and her period of imprisonment and execution in England. Finally, it will look at Mary's cultural afterlife and memorialization.   Twitter: @hunterian Production by Rokkwood Audio, U.K. This episode was produced by Ben Williams.
