FOCUS2023: Fixed income now – Jeff Moore and Stacie Ware
On May 11, Fidelity Investments Canada hosted FOCUS2023, a daylong event for advisors featuring Fidelity’s portfolio managers, subject matter experts and thought leaders. Sessions ran both onstage in Vancouver to a live audience, and from our Toronto studio for a crowd of thousands more online.  On today’s podcast, we’re putting the spotlight on our fixed income team made up of portfolio manager Jeff Moore and quantitative analyst Stacie Ware who sat down with host Katherine Black.  Jeff and Stacie speak about the state of the fixed income market, the inflation and Fed storyline, and what it all means for fixed-income investors going forward.  Jeff says they believe inflation has peaked and they expect a stationary state for inflation to get around sub-four by Christmas. If this is the case, this is a particularly good setup for bonds and the bond market.  Stacie who is new to the team, explains her role. She is actively involved in the day to day management of the portfolios and she also runs scenario analysis. She spends time with macro analysts and sector specialists to talk about how the market may play out and new opportunities in different sectors. And based on all that information, she produces potential outcomes for fixed income portfolio construction.  Both Jeff and Stacie suggest how clients should approach investing in today's market landscape, diversification in fixed income and how treasuries are attractive at this point in time.  Recorded on May 11, 2023. The spring 2023 consumer story – Brendan Cochrane and Andrew Hall
Today we check in with Equity Research Analysts Brendan Cochrane and Andrew Hall, as they discuss the spring consumer story, their thoughts on inflation, and what investors can expect heading into the summer. Brendan and Andrew share highlights from the recent Consumer Price Index announcement. They say food prices have been affected by the above annualized rate of inflation, something consumers can expect to notice on their grocery bills. Though prices have increased steadily across all categories for the past 18 months or so, commodify categories such as dairy and meat have been hit hard by labour shortages and rising production costs. Brendan and Andrew also provide an overview of the ongoing growth of telecom, citing the close of the Rogers-Shaw merger after a two year governmental review as a sign that the industry is embarking on a new era of competition. Turning to the auto sector, Brendan and Andrew explain that as new car production continues to increase, the prices of used cars will drop, positively affecting inflation. The big story of 2023, they say, is the normalization of the supply chain, allowing production to return back to pre-COVID levels. Recorded on May 16, 2023. Jurrien Timmer’s global macro view – May 15, 2023
Today on the program, Fidelity Director of Global Macro Jurrien Timmer discusses what’s moving the markets and provides his insights on what investors should keep top of mind. The Fed, inflation and when rates could be cut are the main discussion points this week. Jurrien believes the Fed has reached its limit to how far they could tighten their policy. He adds the Fed has probably raised rates for the last time at least for a while and could do with a pause, but even if they’re done raising rates, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will start cutting rates right away. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see what the repercussions are from a year of aggressive tightening policy.  Jurrien also touches upon earnings. He says no question that the first quarter of earnings season was a good one, as we wait for a recession that refuses to arrive. Jurrien says earning downgrades are less severe, and there’s been an overall uptrend for US earnings. He also comments on where we are in the bull market saying that the secular bull-market is still alive well and most likely in its twilight or final phase. Recorded on May 15, 2023. Bits and bytes: Digital assets in Q2 2023 – Meghan Chen and Colin Randall
Joining us today is Meghan Chen, Digital Assets Strategist, who walks us through what’s currently happening in the digital assets markets and what is driving crypto assets higher despite the negative headlines. Meghan speaks to Colin Randall, Director of Research and says January saw a strong start for crypto with Bitcoin and Ether prices going up. She explains crypto prices have rebounded this year for two reasons. She notes risk assets performed well in January, as well as stocks and the NASDAQ creating a general tailwind for crypto. Also the collapse of regional banks in the US also created a spike in Bitcoin. When vulnerabilities arise in the traditional finance system, they tend to be a tailwind for crypto prices. Especially for Bitcoin as it is the largest and most established cryptocurrency. Recorded on May 5, 2023. Today, we welcome Beau Coash. Beau is an institutional portfolio manager for fixed-income strategies at Fidelity Investments. Before joining the fixed income team, Beau was global head of syndicate and primary trading for Fidelity Investments Equity Trading division. Beau speaks to host Pamela Ritchie about the current market landscape, its impact on a fixed income and where he’s seeing opportunities right now. Beau explains to Pamela that the team is very excited about bonds this year after a tough go last year. He says we finally have yield back in fixed income and US treasury bonds triple-A rated are looking very attractive. He adds you only get a few chances to buy treasuries really cheap, so this might be a good time to invest. For now, the team is taking a conservative position.
