The fitness industry and in particular those who talk about fat loss, LOVE to be extreme in the way they pitch their ideas as this is what sells more books and programs and is what helps drive more followers to their social media pages. When it comes to the amount of calories you should be eating to help achieve your specific fat loss goals, I have seen MANY pages promote the idea that 1200 calories is where you need to be at and on the opposite side, I have seen people say that this is FAR too little and will put your body into “starvation mode” So… What’s the answer then? Are 1200 calories too little or is it OK to eat 1200 calories and will it help you to achieve your fat loss goals. I started out my career way back in 2006, by opening a private Exercise Physiology Clinic called TrewRehab, that focused on helping people return to full function and beyond and getting back to life after a major injury and once they'd left their stay as an in-patient in hospital. After 5-6 years, this very niche setup progressed to working with a variety of clients that ranged from War Veterans, Olympic Athletes, Weekend Warriors, New Mums and everything in between and so I changed the name of my clinic to TrewExPhys as the focus was no longer just on rehabilitation. After another 5-6 years, I progressed to working more and more with the overweight and obese population as well as the Type 2 Diabetic population and this lead to me writing, what would become a best selling book and begin my stint as The No Breakfast Guy. After 15 years and a well versed career, I am yet again changing things up and looking to create a change that will help an ever growing demographic of people who feel tired, uninspired and UNBALANCED in life as so I introduce to you the next evolution of myself with... The BEST Investment I've Ever Made
I was the guy growing up that had ZERO want to travel, as I had the thought and belief that Australia is the most beautiful country on earth and so why would I waste money going to others places around the world. However, while most ideas that are bought about by large amounts of alcohol are rarely any good, the idea I had while drinking with a mate in March of 2006 was one that would change the course of my life forever. The idea to sell everything and backpack around Europe for a year long trip would plant a seed inside me that in the following years has been allowed to flourish and is something I now recommend to EVERYONE. Life should be made up of collecting EXPERIENCES, not THINGS and in this podcast, I share with you those experiences that have changed me and my life. I don’t regret a single dollar I’ve spent collecting my experiences and I classify every single one of those dollars as the BEST investments I've ever made. Having run a Personal Training and Exercise Physiology business for over 15 years, I think I have a good understanding on what makes a good, bad or great PT and while I don’t proclaim to be the best or know everything, I will say… I've seen my fair share of shitty practices and trainers over the years. The NUMBER 1 mistake I see people make, is not having a clear goal in mind when starting with a trainer or at the very least coming out of their first session having spoken to the trainer and made plans around a goal that you have both determined is right for you. In this podcast, I will talk about the process I used to (and continue to) take my clients through as I helped them work towards their goals as well as offer up some advice on what to look for when you're shopping around for a trainer. Far too many people focus their attention on exercises in their training that take up a lot of time and do very little for their overall performance or ability to make big progress on the areas that you want to be making progress in. No more so than the core and in this week's podcast I debunk a few myths and then go into detail on why you should stop training your core. Not wanting to be a negative ninny, I then go into what I have my clients include in their exercise programs and why these inclusions are a far better use of your time as well as detailing how they train your core in a far more useful way than the standard and most commonly used "crunch". This world we live in has by enlarge, made most of us "soft". What I mean by that is, if you don't want to do something then you don't need to and so for most people when things get a little tough, they opt out and call it quits. On this week's podcast I had the pleasure of speaking to Ryan Crawford who has, among other things, achieved a huge amount in his very short Ultra Distance running career and shown himself and those around him just what the human body and mind is capable of when you keep going and DON'T QUIT. Ryan is a former professional Muay Thai fighter and champion and only shifted to running ultra-distance marathons a few years back. Ryan had never run more than a marathon distance before he came first place in his first 100km Ultra Marathon in 2018. Since then, Ryan has gone onto compete in and win many ultra-distance events and in this weeks podcast we talk to Ryan about his grueling training schedule and the huge challenges that he has had to overcome during many of his races. I think it's not only a very entertaining series and I can't wait to see how it pans out over the coming months, but it's also going to be a very educational series. The lessons that Aaron will learn over his journey, will undoubtedly help people (and himself) understand that being uncomfortable is a normal emotion and feeling but also NECESSARY for growth and progress in our lives. This week I'm bringing back an episode from the vault and I think the points that were spoken about on this podcast are just as timely today as they were nearly 5 years ago when I spoke to Jacob. On that podcast I had the pleasure of speaking to Jacob Andreae who, among other credentials, was a coach at the Northern Territory Institute of Sport. Born and bread in Darwin Jacob completed a completed a Double degree in sports science and education and was able to land a teaching job straight out of uni. Over the years though Jacob took on more and more, always trying to help people become healthier and better versions of themselves while continuing to attend his teaching job which he loved. This increase in work load, eventually came to a head when his body finally gave up and saw him take almost 4 weeks off work and life in general. From this time Jacob has sought to understand why and how his body went through this episode and it saw him look not only at his physical and psychological health, but also his nutrition. After trying a number of different diets and eating patterns he came across gluten and how it may be affecting him and his health. In this episode we talk at length about mental and physical health, but also, how diet can play a large role in how you feel day to day and how taking care of your nutrition can have a profound affect on your overall health and well being.
