Our Editor's Take

Dark Corners is a podcast in the tradition of old radio anthology stories. The creator and host of the show is David Allen Voyles. He looks back at a 30-year tenure as a high school English teacher. After that, he and his family converted a 1972 Cadillac hearse into a tour bus. They used it to give ghost tours of Asheville, North Carolina. Voyles is also the author of several horror books, including Tales from the Hearse.

The Dark Corners podcast is a collection of stories from Voyles' twisted mind. "Wraiths of the Appalachian" follows Eddie Bowen as he makes his way to the Southeastern US at the bidding of a disembodied voice. Along the way, he encounters toe-curling creatures and has blood-soaked adventures. In "Witch Works," a man returns to his childhood hometown to find it transformed. His investigation leads him to a strange toy factory, a root cellar, and a dark forest.

Younger podcast listeners may also appreciate the one-episode stories. A fourth-grader on a school trip gets a history lesson from a resident ghost. A man suffers the fallout of a childhood game gone awry. Voyles revisits the story of Hansel and Gretel with a twist. A couple makes a purchase at an antique store with unforeseen consequences.

Even Christmas is a time to revel in the otherworldly. Every year the podcast tells different spooky Yuletide stories. On his annual toy run, Santa Claus finds himself in a haunted house. In one story, a Christmas wish comes true with disastrous results. "The Toymaker" is about an old man's annual visit to a nearby village and the ensuing terror.

The excellent narration and sound effects bring each story to life. Listeners may quickly get immersed in the drama. Dark Corners is for people who think spooky stories shouldn't be exclusive to Halloween.
