122 - The Pause That Refreshes

122 - The Pause That Refreshes
After the stock market crash in 1929, times were tough and moral was low. Coca Cola created a marketing campaign with the slogan, “The pause that refreshes”. It became more than a simple tagline but a cultural catchphrase. It served as a reminder to take a moment, to pause, and to enjoy a refreshing break and drink Coke of course! In this episode, Genny spoke about the importance of taking a pause; of taking a moment to consider whether you need to make changes in your life or to consider a new direction. She spoke about considering the pros and cons of a decision but then listening to your body as to whether it’s the right decision or not.Genny shared a poem by Tanner Olson entitled, “This is not the End” that spoke to her about this topic, especially these words, “So, before you move onto the next thing, pause. Sit with what is. Just for a moment.” She also shared that she is taking a pause from the podcast for now. She mentioned needing to devote some time to a few projects that need her attention. But she also mentioned wanting to be available for the birth of her grandson; of wanting more time with her granddaughter Leni; and just taking some time.If you would like to sponsor the podcast, please email coffeewithgennyb@gmail.com. 120 - Shelby Olson, Co-Owner of Beauty Bark Chocolate
Chocolate that makes you glow from the inside out. You can find that saying on the home page of the Beauty Bark website. In this episode, Genny spoke with Shelby Olson, co-owner (along with her partner Evgeny Gotfrid) of Beauty Bark. It's a local Winnipeg company that produces Canada’s first naturally sweetened chocolate bark made with organic cacao and organic mushroom extracts.Shelby shared the story of how and why they created Beauty Bark. She always loved chocolate but found that eating most of the chocolate available in the stores started to have an adverse effect on her system, affecting the inside and outside of her body, especially during certain times of the month. She knew there had to be a healthier product out there but when she couldn’t find it, she decided to create one for herself. After experimenting with different ingredients, she and Evgeny created a chocolate that contains no refined sugar and is sweetened with the purest maple syrup. They also added functional mushroom extracts (known for their incredible health benefits), selecting Chaga and Tremella, two powerful mushrooms known for their immune-boosting, digestion-improving, and skin-benefiting properties. Tremella is also known as the "beauty mushroom" for its anti-aging properties in addition to its skin benefits. That inspired them to call their product "Beauty Bark".As well, they wanted a guilt-free chocolate that not only tastes delicious and promotes overall health and well-being but also one that you can feel good about.https://www.beautybark.ca/https://www.instagram.com/_beauty_bark/ Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

115 - Coffee Chat with Matthew Sieben, Owner Railway Roasters
“As a roaster, you need to have a passion for coffee, a passion for people, and immense pride in your work.” - Adri Roux, Owner of Rouxbean Coffee RoasteryIn this episode, Genny spoke with Matthew Sieben, owner of Railway Roasters. A chartered professional accountant and partnerships manager with Gustin Quon, he discovered his passion for coffee on a road trip driving a school friend to Victoria. Along the way, they stopped in Calgary and stayed at an Airbnb. The next morning, the owner took them to her favourite coffee shop, which was Phil & Sebastian, located in downtown Calgary. It was the first time Matthew had coffee that was “made with intention” and that was “pretty special”, which inspired him to want to know more about “this black bean water soup that we call coffee.”After passing his CPA exam, he wanted to learn more about the roasting process so he took a course at Mill City Roasters in Minneapolis. And that started him on his “passion project” to create Railway Roasters, which is an homage to his family’s involvement with the CNN railway. Matthew is participating as a vendor at the MB Food Fest on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the St Norbert Art Centre.https://www.railwayroasters.comhttps://www.instagram.com/railwayroasters/ https://www.mbfoodfest.ca/https://www.instagram.com/mbfoodfestevent/ Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
114 - The Mountain is You

114 - The Mountain is You
“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.”               Sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand mountaineer and explorer, who along with his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, were the first to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1954.In this episode, Genny spoke about the book, “The Mountain is You” by Brianna Wiest. She discovered an excerpt of Brianna’s book posted on Instagram and was so taken by her words that she wanted to buy a copy of her book. However, Genny chose instead to listen to the book on Audible during her morning walks. In that book, Brianna spoke about self-sabotage; how we use coping mechanisms such as perfectionism, pride, or overthinking to deal with our unmet needs or suppressed emotions. It’s about identifying your behaviours to try and deal with those unmet needs without relying on those coping mechanisms. And it’s about paying attention to those triggers that produce feelings of anger, sadness, shame, or embarrassment that can stop us from fulfilling our goals.Genny spoke about why people climb mountains. It’s because it is there. It’s a challenge and presents great difficulties. Humans typically delight in overcoming obstacles. And, to use climbing a mountain as a metaphor for life, it requires endurance, persistence and willpower. To close, Genny encourages us to climb that mountain. It will be hard but it can change your life.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

111 - Who Am I?
Jul 31 2023
111 - Who Am I?
When you meet someone for the first time, you want to know who they are. So, your first questions might be, “So, tell me about yourself.” To which you might respond by telling them what you do for a living, share that you’re married and/or have kids and/or have grandchildren, and perhaps your hobbies. They might ask further questions or ask to clarify something, and this could go on talking about different aspects of who you are.In episode 111, Genny shared that this is not really all of who you are. Because there is more to you than what you present to the world; what they see. This info you share is great to know, and it helps others understand who you are. But if you want to know more about yourself; and learn about what drives you, why you act a certain way, why you respond in a certain way, and why some things come so naturally to you, Genny shared there are different modalities, programs, and tests that will give you a better understanding of who you are.She mentioned Astrology, the Enneagram, Myers-Briggs and the 16 Personalities, Human Design, and Clifton Strengths, and proceeded to share what she learned about herself.Genny stressed that most of the info you find in a few of these modalities are more generic; that could apply to basically anyone. However, with Human Design and Clifton Strengths, it is truer to who you are. Regardless, it’s something that is fun and enjoyable, and interesting to learn about yourself.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

109 - Self-Compassion
Jul 17 2023
109 - Self-Compassion
“It’s not you, it’s me.” That’s a common break-up line used by someone wishing to end a relationship. Instead of telling the other person how they feel and why they need to break up, they are showing compassion for the other person, by breaking it to them gently and taking the blame or taking responsibility for their part in the break-up.In episode 109, Genny shared why she spoke about breaking up with someone, and suggested that perhaps we should break up with that part of ourselves; the part that isn’t working for us; that isn’t making us happy. She shared that when we do something wrong, we can be quick to blame ourselves, to berate ourselves, and basically, be mean to ourselves. We’re also quick to judge. Genny continued to say that sometimes, we not only overthink about a situation – assuming that something is wrong – but we start to ruminate, to internalize, even to project on something that we think might happen, and then we start to spiral out of control. Genny shared that she went through a similar situation and reached out to her brother Ed, who not only managed to talk her down and explain to her what was happening, but suggested that she read the book, “Self-Compassion” – The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself - by Kristin Neff. This book made a huge difference to Genny and gave her the perspective to talk about it in this episode.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

106 - The Body Knows

106 - The Body Knows
If you googled “body book”, the top response would be “The Body Book” by Cameron Diaz. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a plethora of books about the body including “When the Body Says No” by Gabor Mate, “The Body” by Bill Bryson, “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel Van Der Kolk, and “The Body Knows” by Caroline Sutherland. In episode 106, Genny shared what each of these books can offer you in terms of information and guidance. In particular, she mentioned that the book by Gabor Mate talks about the cost of hidden stress, and spoke about how stress had affected her skin. And the book by Caroline Sutherland tells us how to tune into your body, which is something she wishes she had done and shared how she hyper extended her left knee.Genny shared that the body knows before the mind does, and shared that the mind has about 80,000 thoughts per day, about anything and everything, that are mostly useless and repetitive. However, the body gives us information all the time but the mind overrides those signals. It’s important that you listen to your body, not your mind.Genny offered suggestions on how you can tune into your body by doing a body scan when you first wake up or throughout the day, to check for any aches or pains, or areas of concern. As well, she suggested you ask yourself how you’re feeling, as your emotions can affect how your body responds. Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
