Cancer and Comedy

Dr. Brad Miller

The Cancer and Comedy Podcast is for Cancer Impacted People Who are Not Done Living and Are Passionate About Facing the Grim with a Grin. My name is Dr. Brad Miller and The Cancer and Comedy Podcast became my Passion Project At Christmas time 2022 when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer just after retiring from a 43 year career as a pastor. My response was to laugh to keep from crying. I decided after a Christmas visit with my pre-school granddaughters that God wasn't done with me yet and I was going to fully live my life in such a way as to see those granddaughters grow up. I decided to combine my experience as a pastor with my Doctoral Degree in Transformational Leadership with my love of comedy to create the Cancer and Comedy Podcast as place for Cancer Impacted People to Cope with Hope and Humor. I like to say the Cancer and Comedy Podcast is a Place to Turn the Grim into a Grin. Along with my co-host Deb Krier from TryingNotToDie.Live, who is a cancer warrior in her own right, we are dedicated to produce a weekly podcast which brings education, inspiration and entertainment to our audience with practical stories, interviews, funny stories and bad jokes which are designed to help cancer impacted people cope with hope. We will also have faith-based segments in the episodes. Moreover, we love to feature uplifting stories of how people kicked cancer in the butt and won at life. So if you are a cancer impacted person please join me right here on the Cancer and Comedy Podcast where we are all set to lift you up. Dr. Brad Miller, January 2024 read less

Better Bedside Manner: Treating Patients with Kindness, Decency, and Humor
In this episode, Dr. Brad Miller and Deb Krier discuss bedside manners and treating patients with dignity and respect in a doctor-patient relationship. They highlight the need for healthcare professionals to prioritize patient dignity and empathy. By fostering a more humanizing experience, healthcare professionals can improve patient outcomes and create a more positive healing environment.Visiting the doctor isn't always the most enjoyable thing to do when you have cancer or any other medical treatment. Dr. Brad shared his experience of going back to the doctor again after 10 years. His sleep apnea has caused him to struggle with it his entire life, so his doctor advised him to come back. With that appointment, he experienced a humorous conversation with his doctor. He realized from that visit that dignity, respect, and being personable are important in the doctor-patient relationship.Deb also talked about her experience firing multiple doctors because they did not get along. She went to a doctor who advised her to listen and not speak. Without even reviewing Deb's records, the doctor merely gave her the typical medical advice. Because of these experiences, Dr. Brad and Deb have seen the importance of treating people with decency and respect. Some patients may have been on the verge of giving up. However, when they receive respect and dignity, things might occasionally go entirely the other way. Warm human communication and connection make a world of difference. Deb emphasized the importance of introducing yourself and learning the other person's name. Establishing that relationship right at the very start will last the whole time. As Deb’s mother used to say, smile and say thank you.Relationships, humor, and hope are all related to healing because it is connected to being human. Living a life of respect and dignity is a necessary part of being human.
