This weekly report is hosted by Steffan Chirazi and Renée Richardson, two members of the Metallica Camp. Steffan is a long-time rock scribe and editor of the band’s online mag, So What!, whose days covering Metallica began in the 1980s with the British music magazines Sounds and Kerrang! Renée is the Director of Philanthropy for the band’s foundation, All Within My Hands, and also has a storied background in music as a well-known Bay Area radio personality. Each week will sound a little different, but you’ll always remain in the loop. Steffan and Renée will keep you posted with the latest news and updates from Metallica HQ and the road as the M72 Tour makes its way around the world. They’ll bring you mini-features for a little peek behind the curtain, and you’ll learn bits of info you won’t find anywhere else through chats with everyone from members of the road crew to poster artists, from fans to band members themselves!  They won’t just tell you what you need to know; they’ll also get to the bottom of what you want to find out! Episode 72: Helping Hands Honorees Jeff Ament, Maggie Baird
The week of December 11, 2024 on The Metallica Report… Steff and Renée are getting ready for the fourth biennial Helping Hands Concert & Auction on Friday, December 13, by speaking with two of this year’s honorees. First, Renée catches up with actress Maggie Baird (aka the mother of Billie Eilish and Finneas) from Support + Feed. If that organization sounds familiar, it’s because Support + Feed joined us on the 2024 North American M72 run of shows, spreading the word about their work changing the food equity system through education around a plant-based diet. Next, Renée and Steff enjoy an in-depth chat with Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, who discusses his non-profit organization, Montana Pool Service. MPS works to build world-class skate parks and connect youth communities in Montana, Washington, and South Dakota. Though unavailable to join the podcast this week, we still get to hear from Father Greg Boyle, the founder of our third honoree this year, Homeboy Industries. By providing hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated people, Homeboy Industries has evolved into the largest gang intervention, rehab, and re-entry program in the world. Episode 62: James Hetfield; Reports from Mexico City; S7N and “Sin Barreras”
The week of October 2, 2024 on The Metallica Report… Steffan gives Renée —and all of us—the lowdown on how Metallica’s two weekends in Mexico City wrapped up, including updates on support acts, Lucha Libre, Robert’s Spanish, James’ take on Robert and Kirk’s spotlight in the set, and the way metal is deeply rooted in the region’s culture. Episode 60 guest Karla Farrugia (Mexitallica Chapter Head) turned Steffan on to local metal band S7N, who started their career playing Metallica covers before releasing original music. The band toured five maximum-security prisons in Mexico City for their documentary, “Sin Barreras,” which just won three awards at Cannes. Steffan spoke to the film’s directors Gonzalo Figueroa and Louisa Melo to learn why music is at the heart of their film, and to S7N frontman, Mao Kanto, about why this was such a profound experience for the band. The one and only Les Claypool, the creative force behind Primus, joins the podcast to share some teenage algebra class memories. And as any good reporter would do, Renée follows up with Kirk for his take on those early days. Then, our hosts catch up with Jeff Yeager and Brett Murray, the documentarians behind the cameras at every single Metallica tour stop. How many photos do they take a night? How do they pick their shots? Until what time in the wee hours of the morning do they work?! Find out all of that and more on this week’s episode! Episode 57: Kirk Hammett; James Hetfield; Metallica’s Tour Manager, Eric Johnson
The week of August 28, 2024 on The Metallica Report… Our two favorite guitarists stop by for a little chat with Steffan and Renée.  With Metallica getting ready to hit the stage at Lumen Field this weekend, Kirk thinks back to another visit to Seattle, 35 years ago, when the band played possibly the fastest version of “Whiplash” we’ve ever heard.  Then, James talks Westerns and what it was like on the set of The Thicket, the new film starring Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis. The film also features none other than Papa Het in his element out in the wilderness. Finally, Eric Johnson, Metallica’s Tour Manager, shares his version of life on the road and how he stays busy during the downtime with his own artistic expression.  The Metallica Report - your official, weekly guide for all things Metallica, straight from the source. A major force behind what you see in The Metallica Black Box, Dan shares his unique perspective about the online museum’s latest exhibit, Orion: A Tribute To Cliff Burton.
