Our Editor's Take

The Challenge of the Yukon - OTRWesterns.com podcast shares tales from the original radio series. This was a radio show that started during the Great Depression. In 1951, it changed its name to Sergeant Preston of the Yukon—the same name as the adapted TV show.

Andrew Rhynes hosts the Old Time Radio (OTR) Westerns podcasts. He begins each Challenge of the Yukon episode with a short introduction. The series tells the adventures of Sergeant Preston. Helping Preston fight crime is his partner and lead sled dog, Yukon King. Preston is a member of the North-West Mounted Police. The Mounties were part of the Canadian police force, recognized by their uniform of red coats. Their mission is to protect the peace during the 1890s Gold Rush by fighting crooks and outlaws.

The podcast tells stories of smugglers, assassins, and rebellions. Pierre, a guide, joins Preston on many of his mountain missions. Preston's great dog team of huskies, led by the true hero, Yukon King, is always there. With titles like The Tell-Tale Bullet," "King Spots Murder," and "A Swindler Swindled," OTR episodes promise great adventures.

"Danger at Devil's Gorge" starts with the arrival of a steamboat called Yukon Star. A mine owner and his foreman have been waiting for the boat to deliver essential machinery. They need to start making money at the mine because they owe a debt to the mining inspector. Yet, a sinister plot emerges when the foreman meets with the inspector later that evening. Why does the inspector want to keep the owner from paying his debt? How is the foreman involved? And where will Preston and Yukon King come into play?

Challenge of the Yukon - OTRWesterns.com shares the adventures of a Canadian Mountie and his dog. Each podcast episode reveals plots of revenge, murder, mystery, and more. A classic Sergeant Preston tale premieres each week.
