A podcast for knife makers & enthusiasts hosted by Craig from Chop Knives, Geoff from Feder Knives and Mareko from Maumasi Fire Arts. New episodes every Monday morning.
Knife Talk provides expertise and entertainment for knife makers, blacksmiths, and sword makers. The podcast's hosts, Craig Lockwood, Geoff Feder, and Mareko Maumasi, make knives. They share tips and interview other makers each Monday morning. It's an excellent podcast to play while working in the shop.
Craig creates custom designs on his blades, including whales, butterflies, and UFOs. Geoff makes outdoor knives along with kitchen tools. He's an expert in the stonewash finish. Mareko specializes in Damascus steel. His company also makes jewelry and cooking utensils. Craig started the podcast in 2017. Mareko and Geoff were two of his guests. They joined him as cohosts in September 2018.
In the first episode of Knife Talk, Craig talks to Walter Sorrells about Japanese swords. Walter was a novelist before becoming a swordsmith. He discovered he couldn't write from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. His mind lost focus after a few hours. Walter started wanting to make something with his hands. Craig agreed, saying he worked at a publishing company until he got tired of staring at a screen all day. Walter wrote a book about a Japanese sword maker. He bought a sword to see what it felt like, to inform his writing. Then he wanted to create one.
Walter jokes about his disastrous first attempt at a Katana. He retreated to simple Western knives, then progressed to collectible swords. On the podcast, Craig asks Walter if making knives feels like a job. Walter replies that standing in front of a 1,200-degree forge in Georgia weather definitely feels like a job. He runs a YouTube channel Craig calls his "go-to" for blade sharpening and mosaic pins.
Craig, Geoff, and Mareko are excellent guides on the Knife Talk podcast. They explain heat-treating, grinding, tumbling, tempering, and how to hide steel imperfections. The cohosts also answer listeners' questions. Some listeners use funny names to see if the hosts will read them aloud. Geoff says his shop isn't a place where he wants to get too comfortable. This relaxed podcast has the opposite effect.
