We've super excited to have back Ron Carter, Executive Director of the Strand Theater, in Zelienople PA. It has been quite a bit since we last had Ron join us but it was worth the wait as Ron brought with him quite an extensive list of upcoming events to close out 2022 and some key highlights to kick off 2023.Founded in 2001, The Strand Theater Initiative is a non-profit created with the mission of reviving Zelienople’s old Strand Theater as a cultural, education, and community outreach center. Through private and public financial support, The Initiative purchased The Strand in 2002 and completed the first of three planned construction phases in 2009. Since its reopening, The Strand has presented a wide variety of theater, concert, and film programming.Ron starts off the show by sharing with us some of the upcoming events in November as White Christmas is running until November 20th. The Polar Express and Elf will be shown to wrap up November & kick off December. Christmas with Chris Jamison, The Voice Finalist, will be on December 2nd & 3rd. Can't miss YULE TV's Greatest Hits on December 16th and 17th. Fan Favorite "It's a USO Christmas" will be returning for 2 days only, December 17th & 18th.  A showing of "It Happened on 5th Avenue" will be on December 23rd to wrap up the holdiay season. This week's episode features the brand new Ellwood City Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Ryan McCandless. Ryan joins us to talk about who he is, what he has to offer the chamber & the community as well as all of the exciting upcoming events for the Chamber.We start the episode off by getting to know Ryan and what are some of the strengths that he can bring to the chamber to help it grow. His passion, dedication, and positivity shine thru during the conversation. He really cares about Ellwood City and wants the chamber to be super successful! We take a look back over the last few months to see some of the additions or changes Ryan has already made which includes the start of Wander Ellwood from this past summer. The success of Wander Ellwood has already led to discussions of moving the event from once a month to multiple times a month in June, July, and August of 2023. Our main purpose to have Ryan on the show was to learn more about all of the amazing events that the Ellwood City Area Chamber has coming up to end the year. We learn all about Small Business Saturday, Let There Be Lights, Ugly Sweater 5K, and Christmas in the Park. This week we're excited to have two wonderful Rotarians joining us to talk about the upcoming Shine For ShelterBox Dinner Gala on November 4th. Dave and Melanie Sturrock, ShelterBox Ambassadors and Rich-Mar Rotary Satellite Club Members are Co-Chairs for this year's Shine For ShelterBox Dinner Gala and are very passionate about ShelterBox.We kick off the episode by learning more about the Rich-Mar Rotary Satellite Club and how the group comes together to work on local projects for those in need. The club meets less often than a normal Rotary and is more laid back. In order for ShelterBox to continue to help those in need, they need to fundraise and there will be a dinner gala held on Saturday, November 4th at the Stables at Connoquenessing from 6pm-10pm. 5th Annual "A Walk For Hunger"- Featuring SVHS Senior, Avery Flood
This week's episode is extra special as we have our Seneca Valley Senior, Avery Flood, to discuss the 5th Annual A Walk For Hunger Event.Every September, Armstrong works to Avenge Hunger by collecting resources to help supply community feeding programs and bring awareness to the need that exists.  A Walk For Hunger will provide financial support to community feeding programs in the communities served by the Zelienople Armstrong Office. The local feeding programs that we partner with are The Lighthouse Foundation, Southwest Butler Food Cupboard, Gleaner's Food Bank, Victory Family Church, and Holy Redeemer Social Services in Ellwood City.A Walk For Hunger is also a Senior project for a selected Seneca Valley High School Senior each year. This year, we're excited to announce Avery Flood will be our Senior to continue this fantastic tradition! Avery will learn all of Breaking Bread's 4 key initiatives: Raising Awareness for students and people in the community, volunteering at our local food banks for food collection and distribution, and collecting food donations and money to be directly distributed to our food banks!This year, we will be holding A Walk For Hunger in person on Sunday, September 18th at Zelienople Community Park in Zelienople, PA. Registration will start at 9 am. Alison Schuster will be doing a pre-walk stretch/yoga session before our opening ceremony. (Thank you, Alison!) Our opening ceremony will begin at 10 am and we will start walking the trail immediately after. You're only required to do 1 lap (3 laps = 5K) but you're more than welcome to continue on if you'd like to do a 5K. We will have a raffle basket drawing and check presentation ceremony once everyone has finished their walk! This week's episode features two very special guests from the Butler County Suicide Coalition, Amy Cirelli and Lena Southworth. These two incredible women volunteer their time and services to help reduce suicides through education, resources, and support.We start off the episode by learning more about what is the Butler County Suicide Coalition and how people can get involved. Amy shares with us about QPR Training (Question, Persuade, Refer) and how this two-hour training is free for those wanting to participate. This week, we're excited to be joined by Anthony Savannah, President of the Passavant Hospital Foundation. We kick off the show learning about the foundation and the importance of what they do for Passavant Hospital, doctors, nurses, patients, and the community. Passavant Hospital Foundation has many focuses including education seminars & outreach. Anthony shares with us the various types of classes and seminars that they host throughout the year. For more information on outreach: main topic for the episode is to talk about fundraisers and most importantly the 10th Annual 4K & 8K Run/Walk. Passavant Hospital Foundation is excited to celebrate this milestone year for the Run/Walk and have added something new to this already wonderful family event. This year, there will be a Kid's Race for children ages 15 Months to 10 Years Old. The Kid's Race will be prior to the 7pm start for the Run/Walk. The Kid's Race details:On Friday, August 12th at North Park - Pie Traynor Field, the Foundation will be hosting the FIRST EVER Kid's Race for Ages 15 Months to 8 Years Old! Race will begin promptly at 5:45PM and finish by 6:20PM to allow those who are participating in the 4K or 8K race to get to the starting line. Distances for the Kid's Race- 50 Yard Dash (Ages 15 months to 4 Years Old)- 1/4 Mile Yard Dash (5 Years Old to 10 Years Old) - 1/2 Mile Yard Dash (5 Years Old to 10 Years Old) Requirements:- Child must walk/run unassisted. - A parent MUST walk near the child in 50 Yard dash- For those who will not have a parent next to them in the race, they must wait at the end of the finish line for their kid.- We will have an identifier for each child and parent to wear to match. There is also a Virtual Race for those that can't make it to North Park on August 12th and the details are below:You have from Monday, August 1st through Wednesday, August 31st at Midnight to complete the 4K or 8K Race on ANY COURSE YOU LIKE. This week, we welcome back a favorite organization as the Glade Run Lake Conservancy joins us to talk about the upcoming Nature Series. Lisa Busa, Board of Director member, is our guest and the organizer of the 1st ever Nature Series. We start off the episode learning about Glade Run Lake Conservancy and their dedication to: preservation, restoration and improvement of Glade Run Lake in Middlesex Township. We then switch gears to learn about this exciting Nature Series: The Glade Run Lake Conservancy (GRLC) is excited to announce their 2022 Nature Series at Glade Run Lake! This week's episode features an organization that may seem new or unheard of to many but has been around for several years, Family Guidance. Sami Bartek, Director of Communications and Strategic Partnerships, joins us to share the full story of Family Guidance and what they do in the community.We start off with getting to know Sami and the backstory of Family Guidance. We learn about the One2One Mentoring program and their Promise Camp held each summer in Clinton, PA. Sami explains the One2One Mentoring program and how successful their program is for children in this region. Their success stories are quite amazing and just shows that if people are willing to help & volunteer their time, this program can help those in need. We spend time learning about the 6 week Promise Camp that helps to give children an opportunity that they wouldn't receive if it wasn't for Family Guidance. We go thru a typical day/week for the kids and learn that the camp is available to rent during the offseason.How can people get involved:-Be a Mentor-Work at camp in the summer-Renting Promise Camp-Done in a day projects- Volunteer opportunities for groups and organizations to help with projects at the camp. This week's episode is thanks to Tricia Pritchard of the Butler Buzz. She put us in contact with Matt Meiers, founder of So Many Angels. Matt's wonderful organization provides hope, inspiration, and encouragement to children with cancer & other life-threatening medical conditions so that they can become whoever they want to be WHEN they grow up! We start off the episode by getting to know about Matt and how So Many Angels started. Matt's background in photography and helping organizations such as Make A Wish, gave him the inspiration to use his skill set to create one-of-a-kind images of children being superheroes, princesses, and much more! So Many Angels will be holding their first Pittsburgh event for families to get photos taken and experience what So Many Angels has done for over 100 children. The photo session will be held on Saturday, March 12th, 2022 at the UOMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township. This is free to families of a child battling cancer or other life-threatening medical conditions! See the information below:Location: UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex8000 Cranberry Springs Dr, Cranberry Twp, PA 16066Please try to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled session time and have your child in costume ready to go!After a few short instructions, we will start the photo sessions!You will be met at check-in by a volunteer who will escort you to your photo station.Then, the kiddos will take center stage, and we will take their photos! While we do not discourage photos or video being taken at the event, we really want you to sit back, relax, and watch your kid be a kid during their session!There is NO CHARGE for this.The session is only for children aged 3 through high school with life-threatening illnesses who have signed up through the sign-up page SoManyAngels.org on the event page. This week's episode features Maizee Zaccone from Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe). Maizee is the Outreach & Volunteer Advocate for VOICe and she educates us on everything the organization does. We start the episode by learning about VOICe being the sole provider of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crime services for Butler County. They provide services to any victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or other crime, recent or past. VOICe also assists family members and friends of those who have been assaulted or abused.Maizee also shares with us how they provide advocacy services to the community regardless of age, gender, race, color, religion, culture, national origin, sexual orientation, economic status, or the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability.Everything VOICe offers and provides is confidential & free to those in need!We also spend time discussing parts of the VOICe website which Maizee writes the blog articles for the site.
