(4.16) Staying Focused on Our Purpose--Like Addison Pratt

(4.16) Staying Focused on Our Purpose--Like Addison Pratt
Addison Pratt initiated his missionary endeavors in Tahiti in 1844, marking an earlier start compared to other Polynesian islands, with subsequent missions launched in Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fiji, and eventually incorporating New Caledonia into the Tahiti Papeete mission by 1968. Overcoming language barriers was a significant challenge; initially, Pratt relied on a local translator and taught in English, but he soon achieved fluency in Tahitian by immersing himself in the culture and interacting closely with native speakers. His dedication led to the baptism of many individuals, including his translator and sailors, demonstrating his commitment to spreading the gospel in the local language. Pratt’s story also touches on the complexities of navigating the intertwined roles of government and church in French Polynesia. Despite facing pressure to assume political duties, he remained steadfast in his focus on missionary work, even expressing concerns to Brigham Young about being perceived more as a political leader than a church figure. Addison Pratt’s experience underscores the importance of cultural immersion for language learning and the significance of staying true to one’s mission amidst external challenges.__________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book? (4.15) Relationships and the Gathering

(4.15) Relationships and the Gathering
This episode emphasizes the importance of relationships in the dissemination of the gospel, using the biblical account of Peter and Cornelius to underscore the transformative power of cross-cultural evangelism. It then connects this theme to the historical mission of 1843, when missionaries were dispatched to non-English speaking areas, akin to Peter’s calling to visit Cornelius. Among these missionaries was Addison Pratt, a former whaler who, despite a tumultuous past, had developed a rudimentary understanding of Hawaiian during his travels. After receiving a patriarchal blessing, he and three other missionaries, including Benjamin F. Grouard and Noah Rogers, set sail to preach in Hawaii. Their arduous six-month voyage took them past Australia and eventually to an island south of Tahiti, where they encountered both hospitable reception and challenges, such as the death of one missionary from tuberculosis.Upon reaching Tubuai, the missionaries experienced a warm welcome, leading one to remain there while Addison and the others planned to travel to Tahiti, unaware of the war transpiring there. Instead, they redirected to the Tuamutu Islands. The significance of building strong relationships is highlighted through Addison’s interactions with the Tupoy locals and his missionary endeavors that bridged cultural gaps through language. The text concludes by noting the upcoming 180th-anniversary celebration of Addison Pratt’s arrival on Tubuai, an event that church leaders will attend to honor the legacy of early missionary work and the enduring power of relationships in spreading faith.__________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book? (4.13) An 800-Year-Old Prayer to Heal Relationships

(4.13) An 800-Year-Old Prayer to Heal Relationships
St. Francis of Assisi once penned a moving prayer that fits so much into this podcast. It's really a prayer to help relationships flourish--both human and divine. I unpack this prayer line by line to show how it can help us improve any relationship in our lives. The text provides a comprehensive exploration of the spiritual teachings and life philosophy of Saint Francis of Assisi, particularly his commitment to aiding the impoverished and those in suffering. It includes some of his most notable quotes and a prayer he composed, which underscores the importance of fostering love, peace, and the avoidance of contention in relationships—a sentiment echoed by President Nelson’s advice. The narrative draws from the Book of Mormon to stress the crucial roles of forgiveness, faith, and hope in overcoming life’s adversities and aiding others in their journey towards forgiveness and acceptance of their faith’s blessings. These concepts are depicted as inherently linked, with hope being anchored in Christ, who offers strength and solace. The text narrates the story of Anne Madsen, whose unwavering hope amidst physical challenges exemplifies the resilience imbued by faith and hope. Additionally, it portrays a woman whose daily experiences of miracles are attributed to her faith in Jesus Christ, illustrating the transformative power of concentrating on bringing light into darkness, finding joy, and comforting others rather than seeking comfort. The importance of empathy and love in understanding and bolstering relationships is highlighted, alongside the profound connection between forgiveness and being forgiven. Furthermore, the concept that death is a passage to eternal life is contemplated, with an encouragement to share these insights and a sense of anticipation for future spiritual encounters.__________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book? (4.12) Road Rage and Relationships

(4.12) Road Rage and Relationships
In this episode, I share observations on the commendable driving etiquette in Tahiti, where drivers exhibit a strong culture of consideration and selflessness by routinely allowing others to merge onto main roads, assisting with parking, and stopping for pedestrians. This behavior starkly contrasts with the aggressive and self-centered nature of road rage, which has been on the rise. The text delves into the philosophical roots of the Tahitian driving mindset, likening it to living by the Golden Rule and underscoring the importance of empathy, healthy relationships, and ethical responses to others. Statistics reveal the growing problem of road rage, but the Tahitian example serves as an inspiring alternative that the speaker wishes to emulate, highlighting the societal benefits of prioritizing the collective well-being over individual frustrations on the road.__________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book? (4.07) Language, Relationships, and Gratitude

(4.07) Language, Relationships, and Gratitude
The way we talk to each, what we say and how we say it affects our relationships more than we might realize. Here in Tahiti I'm dealing with two languages that are not native to me, so the lessons I'm learning are more apparent than when I'm speaking only English. In this episode, I give both positive and negative experiences with language that affect how we feel about each other and how we feel about ourselves. __________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book? (4.04) Mortality is Sacred
We sometimes think of the next life as a sacred existence--a time when we will be free from all the challenges of mortality. But mortality itself can be viewed as sacred because it is simply a slice of our eternal journey.  In this episode, I share four examples from our mission here in Tahiti that show how mortality is sacred. __________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book?
