Skagit Storytellers

Liz Duffy

Skagit Storytellers is a podcast that's dedicated to entertaining the people who are recording it. If anyone else enjoys the episodes, that's cool too. There is no agenda, a lot of exaggerating and probably shouldn't be taken seriously.
Recorded in several locations around the Skagit Valley.
Skagit Storytellers is a subsidiary of 217 Digital LLC.

SS #056: Tim Mechling
Welcome to Episode 2 of the new season! My guest this week is Tim Mechling, local musician, amazing cooker of meats and my friend. He is the co founder of Washington State's best record label, Washingtones Records, where they "empower Washington’s independent music talent through honesty, collaboration and ingenuity." Sam Chue and Tim started the label in 2023 and I was honored as one of their top supporters at their recent 1 year anniversary party. I love supporting anyone who follows their passion and starts a big endeavor like this. Be safe, be of use, and, like Tim and Sam, go do something hard. Love music? Go to Washingtonesrecords.com and score some sweet merch, cool tunes and support locals following their passion. Love my intro song and my logo? Check out Clay Work. He is incredibly talented. He also hosts Trivia at Lyman Tavern on Tuesdays, and at District Brewing on Wednesdays.  Send me a message through our IG account: Skagit Storytellers. If you have a question, maybe I'll answer it in my intro, or if you have a comment, maybe I'll mention that too. SS #054: Selena Mac
Episode 54! Selena Mac was recommended to me by several musicians in this area. I'm so glad I sat down and heard her story about how she became a musician. I'm always under the assumption that good musicians are good because they started playing at a young age. Selena has only picked up the guitar within the last 5 years and she not only has her own band, Dangerous Curves, she also plays with Leo Bootes and Co AND in Cats Like Us with podcast favorite Miguel Garibay, Bob Paltrow and Stone Jones. This weekend they are playing up in Bellingham at Ramble Tamble from 7-10pm on Saturday night. To keep track of her upcoming gigs, go follow her on IG (@selena_mac_) or on Facebook. She's also playing solo at Brando's BBQ in Bow Edison on January 27th. Thank you for coming over Selena! I'm glad your story is out there (so far!) and I can't wait to see what 2024 brings. Check out her tunes on Spotify too. This is my last episode of Season #1 of Skagit Storytellers. I am happy to be ending this season with Selena's great story. I'll see you guys in the Spring. Be safe, be of use, and go do something hard. Love music? Go to Washingtonesrecords.com and score some sweet merch, cool tunes and support locals following their passion. SS #053: Todd Barnett
Episode 53! This episode will change someone's life. Todd Barnett is an ambassador for a charitable organization called Consequence of Habit. He had weight loss surgery in September of 2021, and ran/walked his first 10k one year later. I'm proud to say that Todd is now an ultra runner (His next race is Saturday and it's a 50k on Amelia Island in Florida). We talk about my terrible geography skills, doing hard things, failure, etc. Enjoy this episode, and please reach out to Todd on IG if you need to have some motivation in your life or tell him if you have a goal and he'll cheer you on. SS #052: The Last Chapter
Episode 52! Welcome to the final installment with my four friends, Clay, Wes, Cody and Charlie. Just like in the two previous episodes, it's sweet, funny and offensive. I love these guys and I am so thankful that I get to call them my friends. Please enjoy the music at the end of the conversation.  The first song is Animal by Wes. It was recorded in Walker's studio in Bellingham by Subdued Sessions. The instrumental guitar is Charlie, and you'll find him playing in Friends For the Ghost and Cory Vincent and the Electric Band. Finally, listen to this raw Cascade Cody tune called Don't Let Me Freeze. Lastly, in my intro, I also squeezed in a brand new song by Zach Michaud called Time of Year. As you all know, I'm a huge Zach Michaud fan so go see him play and check out his rad merch at www.zachmichaudmusic.com Love music? SS #051: Morgan Curry
Episode 51! I've recorded a couple of episodes with fellow gleaners, but I knew I had to have Morgan Curry (I call her "The President") on so we could talk about Skagit Gleaners in depth. I love hearing about how she got the job and I appreciate her clearing up misconceptions that I had. If Gleaners is a good fit for you, awesome! Even if it's not for you, it might be the perfect thing for someone else in your circle. I love what Morgan is doing at work, but even more so, I love the example she is setting for her daughter. Check out the website for current hours and go on a free tour. https://www.skagitgleaners.org/ Thanks Morgan! Love music? SS #044: Trevor Lance
Episode 44! Trevor Lance drums for one of Skagit Valley's best bands, Lazy Acres. When he's not drumming, he's doing fun things like getting ridiculous tattoos, firefighting, running and hanging out with his wife Lindsay. Check out his Youtube channel TLanceDrums ! His band's next show is a big one: They're opening up for Eden at the Lincoln Theater in Mount Vernon. This show will sell out fast so buy your tickets here. We talked about a previous show they played at the Theater and here is the live recording of that. I had a lot of fun with Trevor and I look forward to the 1st Annual Skagit Storytellers Golf Showdown / Podcast featuring him and rival Skagit Valley drummer and golfer, Spencer Duffy. The loser has to get a tattoo of my choosing. Want more Liz & Trevor? Listen to our radio show from last month here. Don't skip through the songs, they're really good 🙂 Books we mention: "Can't Hurt Me" and "Never Finished" by David Goggins, "Resilience" by Eric Greitens, "Is This Anything" by Jerry Seinfeld. SS #043: Todd Warger
Episode 43! Todd Warger grew-up in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, in the small community of Shelburne Falls. He graduated from the University of Nevada with a B.A. in history, relocated to Bellingham, Washington to attend Graduate school. He has been on staff at the Whatcom Museum since 1992. Todd is an Emmy Award nominee for the documentary film The Mountain Runners and a recipient of the Washington State Historical Society’s 2008 David Douglas award for the documentary film Shipyard. He is also author of Murder in the Fourth Corner: True Stories of Whatcom County’s Earliest Homicides, and co-author of Images of America: Mount Baker" -From Murder in the Fourth Corner Todd and I first met when he showed up at my studio to record this podcast, but I had seen his film a few years ago and we had communicate through email when he helped me out with a trivia night at the Concrete Theater. We talk about Eric Chauvin and Brian Young in this episode, and I hope that I can also get those two talented folks on the pod some day too. I had a great time chatting with Todd and I think this episode will inspire people to jump into the deep end and hope for the best. I love Todd's outlook on life and his work. His endless energy reminds me of the James Michener quote: "The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both." Check out his film, The Mountain Runners. As mentioned in the episode, you can stream it a lot of places, it is something showing at a  local theater, or you can discover it the way I did... at the Burlington Public Library. Love music? Go to Washingtonesrecords.com and score some sweet merch, cool tunes and support locals following their passion. Love my intro song and my logo? Check out Clay Work. He is incredibly talented. SS #042: Aida Miller
Episode 42! Aida Miller first crossed my path at the Concrete Theater when she opened for Jack Mattingly and the Enthusiasts. I was lucky enough to bartend that show and it was one of the busiest shows I've seen there. I hope that Aida returns to Concrete at a later date, or Sedro, or Burlington... really anywhere. As you'll hear in the episode, all you have to do is contact her and she'll come play for you. I loved this episode for several reasons, but I really liked the interaction between Aida and my daughter Olive talking about video games. As always, I'll apologize for my poor editing skills. I tried to get Olive's voice up in certain parts but that comes with downfalls too. Some time in the new year I'll be retooling my whole studio and maybe one of my friends who is great at sound will take pity on me and help me sort out the kinks! In typical Aida fashion, she re-recorded the song she originally played in my studio because it wasn't perfect 🙂 Please enjoy our conversation and I'll be sure to let you know if she performs anywhere soon.  Go to Washingtonesrecords.com and score some sweet merch, cool tunes and support locals following their passion. SS #041: Jeff Spradlin
Episode 41! My guest today is Jeff Spradlin. I first got to know Jeff when he was a guest on my radio show with his Lazy Acres band mate, Wes Jones. I’ve seen Jeff around at various shows, but had never spoke to him until the radio. He seemed like a fun guy to chat with so here we are, episode 41. This episode is filled with local musician lore from all the way back to the early 2000s. A couple fun stories he shares on here is how he’s lived in the same house for 30 years (he’s 31 years old, and no, he doesn’t live with his parents), and how he’s spent the last decade or more dislocating his shoulder on a regular basis. He’s actually in a sling during the recording, so that’s what we’re referring to at the beginning. I had a blast talking to Jeff and now I only have to record with two more members of Lazy Acres, so, look out Joe and Trevor. I always have a thank you to Clay for creating my amazing intro song for this podcast, but now he’s also credited with creating my fantastic new logo. If you listen to the song, and look at the logo at the same time, you realize how perfect they are together. Clay, you’re a gifted human and a dear friend. Thank you for caring about my work.  Go to Washingtonesrecords.com and score some sweet merch, cool tunes and support locals following their passion. Love my intro song? Check out Clay Work. SS #040: Sonny Brown
Episode 40! Sonny Brown is the drummer and singer of local rockabilly swing band, The Dimes. He’s also known for being in Gin Gypsy until 2020. When he’s not playing tunes with Rick and Ken, he’s hanging out with his girlfriend Maya or riding around town with the Vicious Badgers. Sonny was a pleasure to chat with and, like always, I’m eternally grateful that folks trust me to share his story to the world. The Dimes’ next show is Friday, Dec 1st at Old Timer’s in Sedro-Woolley.
