The 5 People Rule: Intentional Influence
In this episode, MaryAnn shares a perspective shift on the concept of being the average of the five people you spend the most time with, and, instead, shifting the focus to being the sum of the five people you allow to influence you most. The influences may be intentional, like specific podcasts, or unintentional, like social media feed. But coming to recognize the sources of the 5 people or places that influence you the most is the first step towards living more consciously and intentionally. First, bring it into your conscious awareness the who and the what that is currently having the most influence on you. Second, notice the impact that influence is having on you. Is it positive or negative? What is it creating for you? Third, decide consciously if you want to allow for this source to continue to be one of your top 5 influencers or not. Additional prompts:Who are the 5 people currently having significant influence over me? How do I feel in their presence? How do I feel when I allow them to influence me? What 3 qualities or characteristics would most describe this individual? Are these qualities or characteristics that I want to develop in my personal life or not? Explain. Do I want to continue to allow this person to be one of my top 5 influencers? You are the sum of the 5 people you choose to allow to influence you. Choose them on purpose. Boundaries with Andelin Price
In this episode, MaryAnn talks with relationship coach, Andelin Price, about how boundaries can actually improve and increase intimacy. Boundaries are often thought of as being about the other person  they are fundamentally about self-protection and creating a sense of safety. Feeling safe is crucial for intimacy and trust in any relationship, and boundaries play a key role in achieving this safety.Andelin highlights that setting boundaries is essential for ensuring that you "have your own back." It's about deciding what you will do if something happens, and it contributes to a sense of security, allowing you to get closer to others. Pulling away from relationships often occurs when one feels unsafe, underscoring the importance of safety in fostering intimacy and trust. Some have the misconception that boundaries are about controlling the other person. Andelin clarifies that boundaries are about defining what is acceptable and safe for you. It's not about trying to control someone else's behavior.Boundaries are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, they are an evolving, intuitive process. Recognizing the need for boundaries, understanding their role in relationships, and learning to set them in a way that benefits both parties is an essential skill for building healthy connections.Get your FREE Increasing Connection Through Healthy Boundaries guidebook here! "Manage Your Reactions, But do not Suppress Your Emotions."

"Manage Your Reactions, But do not Suppress Your Emotions."
I recently shared the following quote by Yung Pueblo on social media: "Manage your reactions, but do not suppress your emotions." This quote sparked some great conversations, so I decided to explore this quote in further detail here. The main points  include:The Difference Between Managing and Suppressing Emotions: Many people are confused about the distinction between managing and suppressing emotions. A common misconception is thinking that managing means hiding feelings or expressing them intensely. The Consequences of Suppressing Emotions: Suppressing emotions involves denying their existence, which is not a long-term solution. Much like holding a beach ball underwater,  emotions can resurface unpredictably and potentially harm oneself or others. The Impact on Mental and Physical Health: Suppressing emotions can lead to physical symptoms and, in the long run, contribute to stress-related illnesses. Emotions play a significant role in overall health.Identifying and Naming Emotions: Most people can only identify basic emotions like sadness, anger, and happiness. However, increasing emotional maturity involves probing deeper to understand more nuanced feelings.Noticing How Emotions Feel in the Body: Pay attention to how emotions manifest physically in your body. Understanding bodily sensations associated with emotions is a key step in processing and managing them.Choosing to Act Rather Than React: Managing emotions involves consciously choosing how to respond to them. Emotions drive actions. Identifying the emotion helps us to identify and communicate the underlying need. The Power of Emotional Management: Effectively managing emotions  leads to solutions rather than problems. Practicing Emotional Management: Emotional management is a skill worth developing over time. It takes practice, but is worth the effort.Seeking Support? Come and work with me!  Click here to get started!

How to Identify Needs
Aug 31 2023
How to Identify Needs
In recent  episodes, the focus has been on effective communication of needs in relationships to prevent resentment. However, it has become apparent that many struggle with identifying their own needs, hindering their ability to communicate them. Despite being attuned to others' needs, some find it challenging to recognize their own. This leads to a cycle of unspoken expectations, miscommunication, and frustration. For instance, when overwhelmed, it's easy to convey distress through body language and reactions, yet pinpointing the exact need remains elusive. Family and friends may attempt to help, but without clear communication, their efforts can fall short, worsening the situation. Often, intense emotions trigger a reactive mindset, hindering self-awareness and identification of needs. To counteract this, practicing self-awareness during emotional moments can reactivate rational thinking. Five tips are shared:Get in tune with your body: Notice physical sensations like tension, unease, or restlessness. These signals provide valuable insights into your needs. A nauseous feeling might stem from anxiety, suggesting chamomile tea might help; a headache could indicate a need for rest and quiet.Label your emotions: Differentiate between emotions like insecurity and jealousy, sadness and depression. Identifying and understanding various emotions contributes to emotional maturity. Emotions serve as information to uncover needs.Engage in self-reflection and journaling: Document emotions and their associated stories. Writing out raw thoughts allows for release and subsequent self-analysis. This "ugly first draft" reveals patterns and offers the chance to rewrite your narrative.Distinguish facts from stories: Examine situations to discern objective facts from subjective interpretations. This step reduces assumptions and helps clarify your needs.Imagine desired outcomes: Rewrite events to reflect how you wished they unfolded. This exercise highlights your needs and expectations, aiding in clear communication.Recognizing that emotions are informative rather than disruptive, and using these techniques, can lead to enhanced emotional understanding and better communication of needs. Emotional intelligence fosters healthier connections and personal growth.Click here to listen to Episode 18: What if The Path You're on Leads You to Where You Are Going? How to Ask For Help

How to Ask For Help
In this episode, MaryAnn Walker helps listeners learn how to ask for help.MaryAnn identifies common thoughts that hinder seeking help, such as not wanting to be a burden, fearing it signifies weakness, or seeking to prove one's capability. She emphasizes that people pleasers often suppress their own needs due to their fear of rejection or disrupting relationships, which prevents  them from asking for help when they genuinely need it.The podcast highlights a paradox where people pleasers are willing to help others but also struggle with asking for assistance themselves.  This pattern can create an imbalance in relationships, limiting vulnerability and true connection. MaryAnn compares relationships to a tennis match, pointing out that the absence of reciprocal requests hampers deep connections. She acknowledges the challenge of being rejected when asking for help, suggesting that accepting people's responses at face value can lead to healthier perspectives. MaryAnn encourages starting with small requests to rewire the brain's discomfort around seeking help and emphasizes that vulnerability, rather than being a weakness, is a courageous act that nurtures connection. The podcast underscores the importance of clear and direct communication vs passive communication and  hints which can lead to misunderstandings and resentments. MaryAnn advises making explicit requests to create balance and allow others to fulfill needs. She concludes by encouraging listeners to practice making explicit requests and recognizing the value of vulnerability in fostering meaningful relationships. Are you interested in booking a call?  Contact MaryAnn either via her website, www.maryannwalker.life or email her at maryann@maryannwalker.life We would love to hear your feedback on this podcast!  What episode has been most influential for you?  What would you like to learn more about?  Click here to leave  your review! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1WGzrZWvqiYgXUf-B-IRzr1GzkNEOmsmyEYhG1_UI1KQ/viewform?pli=1&pli=1&edit_requested=trueWant to connect on social media?  Click here to follow MaryAnn on your favorite platform! https://linktr.ee/maryannwalker.life
