John Christie was a World War 1 and 2 veteran who lived with his wife Ethel in the bottom floor flat of 10 Rillington Place, a low-income apartment building in London’s Notting Hill district. In the 50s, there was a media storm when one of the tenants living in the same building as John, a man named Timothy Evans, was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and baby daughter - despite claiming innocence. John and his wife were star witnesses in that trial, testifying that their upstairs neighbours, Timothy and his wife, argued constantly and the night before her murder they had heard a loud thud. In the early morning hours of May 24, 1987, Kenneth Parks got up from the sofa where he had been watching TV, got into his vehicle and drove 20 km - or 12 and a half miles - from his home in Toronto to his in-laws home in Scarborough. He used the spare key that they had given him to enter the residence and proceeded to the master bedroom, where he found his mother and father-in-law sleeping in their bed. He proceeded to bludgeon his mother-in-law with a tire iron, which he had brought with him from home, before proceeding to choke his father-in-law. Then, he got into his car and drove to the nearest police station, where he turned himself in saying “I think I have just killed two people.” And open and shut case for murder right? Wrong. Because Kenneth Parks had a story that could save him from sentence of life in prison. He claimed that he was sleepwalking during the murder and was completely, unconscious and unaware of what he was doing until he surrendered to the police. 14-year-old British Columbia teenager Reena Virk struggled to fit in. She was relentlessly bullied from elementary school, all the way to high school. Life was not always easy for 20-year-old Amanda Wienckowski. At one point, her friends and family had to watch her struggle with an addiction that had her spending time with undesirable people on the wrong side of town. But she was trying to get her life back on track, even enrolling in a criminal justice course at her local community college. However, on the evening of December 5, 2008, her life was cut short. According to Adam Patterson, Amanda was dropped off that night at Antoine Garner’s home, which was located in a dangerous neighborhood.When a few days passed and she failed to return home, her mother reported her missing to the police. They interviewed Adam Patterson, the man who allegedly dropped her off at Garner’s home and he said initially he was going to wait for her to return to the car, but she called and told him he could leave - so he did. However, Antoine Garner, the man Amanda was seeing that evening, claimed she only stayed for a few minutes and then left with Patterson. Their stories did not match up and investigators believed Amanda may have been a victim of foul play. Then, approximately five weeks later, the police received an anonymous tip pointing them to a parking lot where they would find Amanda’s body in a garbage bin. She was found nude, face down, with her hair shaved off and covered in bruises. What looked like an apparent murder would be ruled an accidental opiate overdose, sparking a decades-long fight for truth.It has been over 15 years since Amanda’s battered body was found in that garbage bin and her family continues to push to have her manner of death changed to homicide. In 2014, YouTuber and experienced hiker, Kenny Veach, who went by the handle ‘snakebitmgee’ seemingly vanished while looking for a mysterious cave in the Mojave Dessert. The story of the unsolved disappearance of eight-year-old Relisha Rudd is particularly tragic because, in her short life, she had already survived so much: Neglect, poverty, homelessness and a cycle of trauma within her family. Her mother, Shamika Young, grew up in foster care, struggled with behavioural issues and at one point even had to be placed in a mental facility. Now, Relisha was living with her mom, stepdad Antonio, and little brothers in an overcapacity homeless shelter. It was here that her mother would entrust her to the care of a shelter worker, a janitor named Kahlil Tatum, who had taken a special interest in the little girl. After Shamika handed her precious daughter Relisha over to this practical stranger, 30 days would pass before anyone noticed she was missing. It was the staff at her school who felt something was amiss when they were given a note from her mother stating she was absent due to health issues. Authorities would learn that the note signed by a “Doctor Tatum,” was actually written up by the shelter the janitor, Kahlil Tatum.An investigation into her whereabouts would reveal two sightings of Relisha had hotels in the area, where she was seen walking down the hallway with Tatum. Zohreh Sadeghi was a 33-year-old young woman living in Redmond, Washington. She was an immigrant from Iran, a successful software engineer and a podcaster, who shared her lived experiences talking about how to find a job in the tech industry as a newcomer. In the summer of 2022, she would have the chance to meet one of her listeners, another Iranian immigrant, 38-year-old Ramin Khodakaramrezaei, who seemed to be enamored with her. At first, Zohreh was flattered, but when he began harassing her, calling her from different numbers, and even showing up at her home with gifts, she became terrified and filed an order of protection against him. Sadly, as we have seen time and again, orders of protection are pieces of paper that often do not protect victims against their stalkers. It was the summer of 2013 in Campbelltown, New Brunswick, Canada. Noah and Connor Barthe, who were 4 and 6 years old, had spent the day having a blast with family friends at a farm. That evening, they had a sleepover at their best friend's house, which was located just above an exotic pet store that his father owned. Not all of the animals were kept downstairs in the store. Jean-Claude Savoie owned a 12-foot-long African rock python which was kept in a glass enclosure in the apartment. Somehow, during the night, the python escaped through an air duct. The 100lbs snake broke through the ceiling right above where the boys were sleeping in the living room. The following morning at around 6:30 am, Savoie would walk into the living room to a horrifying scene. The two little boys had been killed - crushed to death by the python. Their family friends and the community were devastated over the loss of these two very loved children, while the python owner was charged with criminal negligence. He would be found not guilty, surprising some, and relieving others. Nicola Furlong was a 21-year-old Dublin City University student who was studying University in Japan as part of an exchange program. In May of 2012, she enjoyed a night out at a Nicki Minaj concert with one of her girlfriends. When the concert was over, they planned to continue their night barhopping until the first train arrived in the morning to take them home. While standing at the station, they encountered two American men and were happy to meet other foreigners who could speak English. They decided to head to a bar and share some drinks. The rest of the evening was a blur, as the last thing Nicola’s friend would remember was taking a shot of tequila before blacking out, coming in and out of consciousness. They were taken to a nearby hotel where the men separated the two women. On April 22, 2012, several residents living in a quiet neighborhood located in North Bend, Washington, called 911 after seeing flames coming out of the windows of a neighboring home. Thankfully firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to put out the fire quickly. But when they took a closer look at the remnants of the house, they would make a gruesome discovery - two bodies, untouched by the fire but both shot in the head. They belonged to 41-year-old Lynnette Keller, and her 19-year-old daughter, Kaylene. Missing from the residence was the patriarch of the house, 41-year-old Peter Keller. On Easter Sunday, 1991, a gas station in Bloomington, Illinois would be robbed at gunpoint. Tragically, Billy Little, the attendant working that night, would be killed - shot to death for the money in his cash register. Investigators collected evidence from the crime scene including fingerprints, shoe prints and even a DNA sample, but they struggled for years to nail down who the armed robber was. It wasn’t until 8 years later that a witness would pick out a man named Jamie Snow from a lineup. Jamie was a person the police had their eye on from the beginning, but the witness had previously failed to pick him out from photos and lineups. Now that this witness pointed at Jamie Snow, the police moved in on an arrest. However, Jamie denied robbing the gas station and killing the attendant. He said he was at home eating dinner with his children at the time of the crime. Despite Jamie having an alibi and passing a polygraph test, the police found no evidence to connect him to the crime scene and an eye witness that only pointed at Jamie 8 years later, Jamie Snow would be tried and convicted.
