FSU football: Mike Norvell interview after first Florida State Seminoles practice of bye week
Florida State does not play an opponent this week but do not let Mike Norvell know. Even during a bye week, the Seminoles came out with their usual energy and intensity in their first action since defeating Clemson on Saturday. There were no black jerseys on the scout team today, and practice finished earlier than usual; even with the importance of keeping focus and energy high, this week is essential for the Seminoles to get the chance to rest up and get their legs back underneath them. A visibly pleased Norvell met with the media after saying he felt today “was a really good day...proud of players... they worked at a really high level.” It would be easy for the Seminoles to loaf through the first practice after an emotional win, but that word is not in the team dictionary. On a shorter day, three themes stood out above the rest. Fundamentals Florida State can reassess where the team needs work during the bye week. No surprise here; the Seminole coaching staff wanted to get back to the basics and work on technique for the beginning part of practice. The wide receivers worked on blocking, the secondary worked on tackling, and the big uglies practiced recovering fumbles. When adversity rises up in a football game, often, fundamentals fail the players. The coaching staff knows that the easy tasks become hard without the baseline, and the challenging tasks become impossible. After the first round of drills, the usual focus on turnovers took over the Dunlap practice facility. The defensive backs looked to rip the ball out of the offensive player’s hands while the staff reminded those under siege to keep the ball high and dry. After a game where the decisive stat was the turnovers on each side, the players’ understanding of its importance rose to a new level. The coaching staff identified the turnover battle as a way to take the squad to the next level, and no matter what week of the year it is, they will be a focus. Johnny Wilson Norvell yells “respond” almost more than he screams anything else. Johnny Wilson heard the coach’s message loud and clear. After the Southern Mississippi low point, Wilson, throughout practice, has brought a new level of focus and intensity. Wilson never sat still in any training session in the last two weeks, including today. He constantly receives pass-catching work or has multiple tennis balls thrown his way at one time. The work produced sparkling results in the last two games, and he soared in practice Tuesday morning. The one-on-one portion of practice turned into a Johnny Wilson pat on the back tour. He went over Fentrell Cypress multiple times, high-pointing the ball and using strong hands to come down with the pass. Mike Norvell loved every second of his 6’7 receiver finally returning to his own. Wilson carried over his play into 11 on 11 work, grabbing the ball over the middle to break the FSU zone defense as he lined up in the slot. With two physical stars on the outside, the Seminoles create an advantage that few teams can match. Winston Wright and Destyn Hill Usually, I like to highlight players individually, but if the FSU depth chart uses an OR, why can’t I? Both slot receivers have inspiring stories that even brought them back to the football field, but the results are not where they expected coming into the season. They each compete incredibly hard daily, and today’s rainy practice was no different. The receivers took turns in the slot, constantly turning defenders and leaving them in the dust. Destyn Hill ran the silkiest route of the day, an in-and-out route that left Kevin Knowles stranded after the play. These two playmakers need to get involved in the offense more as the season wears on. With defenses most likely requiring a double team on Johnny and Keon, the middle of the field should be wide open. The shifty pass catchers need to benefit from the matchups and take advantage. FSU kicks off Clemson week: Mike Norvell, Alex Atkins, Adam Fuller, John Papuchis look back on Florida State Seminoles' win over Boston College, preview major matchup vs. Clemson Tigers
Florida State kicks off one of the season's most anticipated matchups at noon on Saturday against Clemson. Mike Norvell and his staff met with the media to offer final thoughts on Boston College and discuss matchups and game plans they expect to see against Clemson. Mike Norvell, as usual, was the first to speak and did not disappoint in his opening statements. In one of his more extended monologues, the Seminole coach mentioned his team” did not play to the best of our ability for 60 minutes of that game” while taking the blame for the miscues, including the squib kick. He did not come off as a coach concerned or panicked over his team but knows they got away with one. “There were some really positive moments, but ultimately just too much inconsistency,” he said. “Didn’t start the way we wanted to start defensively, gave up a couple of big plays, had a couple of communication issues, things that we worked, things that had been right in practice, and ultimately in the moment did not execute. We’ve got to continue to improve there.” Mike Norvell assessed all three phases and said he heard “ownership yesterday” from his team during their meetings. Regarding the injury front, Norvell is “not worried about (Jordan Travis’) health here moving forward.” Alex Atkins brought his patented insight on the run game, noting that FSU still lacks consistency while running the ball and, as a team, “we need to find creative ways to do that.” When asked about Keon Coleman not recording a catch on Saturday, the offensive coordinator noted that different players stepped up for the Seminoles in different weeks but that great players will not be kept down for long. Adam Fuller answered questions mainly on the communication breakdowns and busts in coverages. Fuller said the Seminole stoppers have had “some really poor eyes on some of these scramble situations” and that lessons are being learned the “hard way” on defense. Most of the errors he felt were fixable, and this week provided them with great teaching moments. John Papuchis’ went last as he gave insight into the blunders that plagued the team Saturday. JP said Keon Coleman got “ caught in that in-between mode” about the punt at the end of the game and that he would “love to have that play back” when discussing the squib kick. Week 2 College Football Picks, Daily Fantasy Plays: Breaking down a major slate of games including Alabama vs. Texas
Nearly 365 days ago, the Texas Longhorns planted their flag atop the college football world. A battle with the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide left Austin feeling like the capital of college football they weren’t always destined to be. Nick Saban, Bryce Young and the rest of the SEC powerhouse baffled by the Longhorns defense. Texas was back. Except they lost. But it felt like they won right? They had that one bad call that cost them the game, remember? They basically won regardless of what the score says, don’t ya know? Surely, the sky was the limit from there. Four additional losses, Texas finished up 8-5 and once again not back yet. This year, they’ve got the same hype. Another year as everyone’s favorite college football dark horse to make the College Football Playoff. Another year billing Sarkisian as a genius ready to rule the sport in burnt orange. Another year facing the most recent king of the mountain. You want to run the yard again, Texas? Here’s your chance. In the belly of the beast. Against the most dominant force in the sport for the last 15 years. At their house. We just saw Florida State announce itself to the world on a national stage in their blowout triumph over LSU. Do you have what it takes to do the same? To tell the SEC you’re coming to dominate their conference next year? To reclaim the Big 12 for the first time since 2009? To show the nation you’re capable of your first CFP appearance? To finish the story? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

FSU football: Florida State Seminoles blow out LSU in primetime, make major statement to start 2023 college football season
With some halftime adjustments, Mike Norvell and his Florida State Seminoles announced themselves as a juggernaut to the college football world en route to a 45-24 blowout of the LSU Tigers. The dominant win sparks a lot to talk about for the Seminole Wrap crew — Brian Pellerin, Jon Marchant and Ben Meyerson — both in the short-term and long-term picture of Florida State’s season. However, you won’t hear much from Brian as he serves a 10-minute suspension thanks to last week’s bet on the game, where he took his alma mater LSU to win. This week, the crew looks at what made Florida State so successful against the Tigers, what adjustments really made the difference in the second half and what it all means for the long-term picture of the Noles’ ACC championship and College Football Playoff dreams. Mike Norvell vs. Brian Kelly 2023 was the third consecutive year Mike Norvell and FSU opened the season against Brian Kelly and each time things only got worse for the former Notre Dame head man. In the 2021 matchup, a lesser-talented Noles team took Kelly’s Irish to the wire and nearly pulled off the upset in an OT loss. Last season, the Noles went into the Superdome for Brian Kelly’s first game with the purple and gold and should’ve run the Tigers out of their home state short of a couple poorly executed plays down the stretch. And this year, Norvell checkmated Kelly at every turn, leaving the man who promised to “Beat the heck out of Florida State” nearly speechless postgame in explaining why he couldn’t slow down the Noles attack. For three years, Brian says Norvell has coached circles around a man considered one of the best in the sport. The Seminole Wrap team explains this week why Norvell was simply playing chess to Kelly’s checkers. Keon Coleman arrives If you had any doubts about the type of wide receiver FSU got in transfer Keon Coleman, allow us to point you back to last night’s highlights. He can play big. He can play small. He can make guys miss in space. Coleman is a No. 1 wide receiver and Ben is ready to name him the second-best WR prospect in the NFL Draft next to Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. The crew dives into what allowed him to succeed this game and what it opens up for the rest of the FSU offense to have Coleman and Jaheim Bell’s skillset now in the mix. FSU Dominates Offensive & Defensive Fronts The other top headline from the game was Florida State’s ability to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Noles were able to push LSU around upfront, but really controlled the game most with the defensive line. Outside of two long runs late in the 2nd quarter, LSU was unable to find any success in the ground game — 25 carries for 38 yards. Jon shares his perspective on what gave Florida State the edge against the LSU rushing attack and the key personnel adjustment that opened up the Florida State running game in the second half. FSU dominates LSU to start 2023: Mike Norvell, Jordan Travis, Keon Coleman speak following Florida State Seminoles football's blowout victory over LSU
The No. 8 Florida State Seminoles opened their 2023 season with a win over the No. 5 LSU Tigers, 45-24, in the Camping World Kickoff in Orlando, Florida. It’s the second year in a row the Noles begin their campaign with a win against the Tigers. This time they did it by dominating the second half, scoring 31 unanswered before LSU’s 75-yard TD in the final 1:15. The star of the game was FSU WR Keon Coleman, who showed why he was one of the most sought after transfers in the nation early and often in this one. The Louisiana native scored on a 40-yard catch and run to open the scoring on Florida State’s first drive. He then followed it up late in the 2nd quarter by winning a jump ball in the endzone to even the score at 14. And why not add a third to put the game on ice? He finished the game with 9 receptions, 122 yards and 3 TDs. FSU’s other new face Jaheim Bell found the endzone in the fourth as well on a 44-yard TD reception to extend the Noles lead in the 4th. He added a 4-yard rushing touchdown with 1:26 left in the 4th to close the scoring. Veteran WR Johnny Wilson was Johnny on the spot several times for the Noles on big 3rd downs to move the chains. He finished the game with 7 receptions and 104 yards. A strong start for FSU’s top three receiving weapons. Jordan Travis had a few ill-advised throws in the first half, but really found his groove in the second half, adding a rushing score to go with his 4 TDs and 342 yards through the air.
