FSU beats Gators, finishes regular season undefeated: Mike Norvell talks after Florida State Seminoles advance to 12-0
It was a first quarter to forget for Florida State, who had just -7 total yards and a single drive over the first 15 minutes. But there are four of them in a football game and in the end, FSU managed to take care of business, covering the spread and beating the Florida Gators 24-15 to finish the regular season perfect. The second quarter didn’t start off any better, as Florida was able to ride third down conversion after third down conversion to take a 10-0 lead (its first touchdown coming after an extremely questionable unnecessary roughness call), making up for lost points on a missed field goal by taking down Tate Rodemaker for a safety. Anchored down by penalties and poor field position, FSU failed to find any offensive momentum until its final drive of the second quarter — a 10-play, 90-yard drive that saw the Seminoles earn their first points of the game. Florida State, starting off with the ball in the third quarter, took its first lead of the game after Trey Benson ripped off a 36-yard rush. Florida would immediately drive down the field and retake the lead off a field goal, making things 15-14. That score would hold until midway through the fourth when, after two teams traded off pairs of punts, FSU took advantage of a major punt return from Keon Coleman and a big fourth down catch from Ja’Khi Douglas to end up in goal-to-go distance. The Seminoles were unable to punch it in, however, and settled for a 19-yard field goal to go up 17-15. FSU’s defense stepped up on the Gators’ next drive, forcing a third straight three-and-out to get the Seminoles the ball back with 5:37 on the clock. Facing third and 17 from the Florida State 42-yard line, Rodemaker took off to try and convert and, while sliding, was hit in the helmet by two separate Gators and forced to leave the game. True freshman Brock Glenn was forced into action with 3:44 in the game, tasked with preserving the Seminoles' lead. The result? Another ridiculous, grown man run from Benson — this time, a 26-yarder to push Florida State’s lead to 24-15 with 2:48 to go. With its final chance at closing the gap, Florida was unable to get anything going as Jared Verse snagged two sacks to force a fourth and 20, where Kalen DeLoach picked off Brown to solidify the win. Florida State, 12-0 and undefeated in the regular season, will now face off against the Louisville Cardinals in the ACC Championship. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

College Football Week 13 Picks, Daily Fantasy Plays: FSU-UF, Michigan-Ohio State, Oregon-Oregon State, Washington-Washington State and more
Rivalry weekend is one of if not the best tradition in the college football. For the large part, it’s in-state schools in a battle built completely on dislike, disdain or just pure uncut hatred. And every year brings a brand new twist to the rivalry. For some like Florida, it’s a chance to ruin your rival’s dream season. For teams like Ohio State and Michigan, it’s the only chance either team has to play a team that is worth anything so it’s for all the who knows how good either team is marbles. This year though, we’ve got an added twist to it all and not one we see very often. Oregon State-Oregon and Washington State-Washington are two rivalry games potentially for eternal bragging rights. In both of those games, Washington and Oregon have left their in-state counterpart, their most bitter rival on an island alone to rot. This summer, the Huskies and Ducks followed the Los Angeles schools to the Big Ten while the rest of the conference dipped to the Big 12. Left alone? The pair noww affectionately known as 2-Pac — Washington State and Oregon State. Think that has some bad blood for this week? And let’s not forget that, as I write this, these four schools have said they discussed continuing their respective rivalries but nothing definitive has been announced yet. So this could be one final opportunity to hold bragging rights for today, tomorrow and every tomorrow after that. Do you have enough hate your heart to weather that storm? FSU basketball: Seminoles are 4-1 after Top 25 win over Colorado — buy or sell Florida State?
Facing off against its first ranked opponent of the 2023-24 season, Florida State took on the No. 18 Colorado Buffaloes in the championship round of the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach on Tuesday. FSU, having taken down UNLV the night before, battled with the Buffaloes over the course of a tight 40-minute matchup. It was another huge night from Jamir Watkins, who had a dynamic night for the Seminoles with a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds). He was joined by Jalen Warley (19 points) and De’Ante Green (10) as double-digit scorers, with Darin Green Jr. (12) also hitting a trio of timely threes. Florida State trailed 30-27 at half but never trailed by more than four points, with its defensive attack effective in shutting down a lethal Colorado offense. In the second half, it was the Seminoles who managed to separate at first, leading by as much as 10 before the Buffaloes found a groove near the 13-minute mark of the game. FSU separated things once again after Warley had a dynamic back-to-back bucket sequence, putting the Seminoles up 55-49 with 6:47 to go, but Colorado managed to storm back and grab a three-point lead with 2:51 in the game. Watkins hit a jumper to cut the lead to one and then a free throw by Warley tied things up with 1:11 left. Neither team scored a bucket for the rest of regulation, with the Seminoles having a chance at a final shot but a messy sequence saw Watkins turning the ball over to send things to overtime in the World’s Most Famous Beach. With 38 seconds to play Colorado managed to hit a jumper but a fast break dunk by Warley again pushed FSU’s lead up to seven with 32 seconds to play. Colorado would get a basket in the aftermath, but forced to foul with 20 seconds to go, allowed the Seminoles return trips to the charity stripe to push it to 75-69 with 14 seconds. Warley, who missed two free throws but hit one, committed a shooting foul — Colorado hit both shots, with the score now sitting at 75-71. With nine seconds left, Green Jr. hit both of his free throw attempts to separate the Seminoles by six, a margin that would hold up after Colorado missed a desperation three in the closing seconds. It was an impressive defensive performance from start to finish against a Colorado team that fields one of the top offenses in the country — the Buffaloes, entering into the game, averaged 85 points per game (No. 28 in the country) and were shooting 48.6% from 3 (No. 3). On Tuesday night, Colorado shot just 35% from the field and 25% (5-20) from beyond the arc. With the win, the Seminoles have now won each of their overtime decisions since a 101-90 double overtime win over Syracuse on January 13, 2018 in a game played at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee — 14 games in a row, an NCAA record. Next up for Florida State (4-1) is a home matchup vs. the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday, November 29 as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

FSU is 11-0 after win but loses Jordan Travis to injury: Mike Norvell interview following Florida State's win over North Alabma
No. 4 Florida State (11-0, 8-0 ACC) will head into next week’s rivalry showdown against the Florida Gators with a chance to cap off an undefeated regular season after beating North Alabama 58-13. The matchup, which served as Senior Night and the Seminoles’ home finale, saw Florida State go down 13-0 early then lose quarterback Jordan Travis to a horrific leg injury. Tate Rodemaker entered the game in relief and helped spur an FSU run that saw Florida State score 58-unanswered points to secure the win. “You know, faced adversity on the field early, had a punt fake that hit us,” head coach Mike Norvell, who is now 29-16 overall as coach of the Seminoles. “They did a good job of running a variety of different plays and formations and were able to get out to an early lead. You know, offensively obviously didn’t start how we wanted, missed some opportunities. “When Jordan went down, that was something that nobody ever wants to see a player go down. I don’t have any updates on it tonight, so just so everybody is aware, but I was proud of the way our guys responded throughout the course of the game.” As you sit there and watch a football team come together, I thought our guys did that at a very high level. We knew all three phases we had to continue to rise up. I thought our defense was great basically throughout the rest of the game.” After the game, Norvell as well as defensive back Jarrian Jones, defensive lineman Dennis Briggs and running backs Lawrance Toafili and Caziah Holmes offered insight into the Seminoles’ win. Week 11 College Football Picks, Daily Fantasy: Ranked teams hit the road -- somebody has to lose
Families are gathering together. Food is being prepared in multitudes. Drinks are being consumed aplenty. Tis Thanksgiving season. So allow me to be sentimental for a moment. For starters, thank you to the loyal readers, commenters and listeners for reading, commenting and listening. We couldn’t do this silly little article and podcast without you all. Second, I want to thank this college football season because what a drunk mess it has been. Michigan alone has had their head coach suspended two different times for two different cheating scandals and they remain firmly entrenched in the College Football Playoffs at this point. Texas A&M once again opened the year with tons of expectations and are now once again searching to replace a disappointing head coach. Miami is bragging about closing a gap they haven’t closed since I was in the second grade. Dabo is fighting fans during radio shows before dominating rivals in the midst of a disappointing season. And for most of you, Florida State has had the fun year we were promised all offseason. It’s truly been a blast of year. But there is one thing we are still missing... the massive upset. So I present to you all what I’m calling Upsetsgiving. Do you like top-ten teams on the road? Because I’ve got 5 of them for you. And one of them is an underdog. It’s time, college football gods. Give us the bow on the year we’ve had so far. Let’s deliver this Upsetsgiving to one and all. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

FSU softball: Breaking down Florida State Seminoles' ACC opponents -- Part one
Florida State softball is coming off of another dominating season, finishing as the national runners up and capturing both the ACC regular season and tournament titles. Brian and Gwyn are back for another round of fall podcasting, where they dive into the other teams in the conference that FSU Softball will look to go against in the 2024 season. Starting with Boston College, they talk about where the Eagles finished last season and the new additions added. Following BC, a look into the Clemson Tigers, who FSU will not play in the regular season. The past several season, Clemson has been atop the conference, vying for the top spot. Gwyn talks about how the program will fare as they are looking to make a push for OKC. Another program that is looking to stay at the top of the ACC is Duke, who has a steady group of returners. An experienced Duke team, who finished in the Durham Super Regional, also look to make their first trip to Oklahoma City for the first time in program history. Georgia Tech loses some key players, but returns staples in the circle. In terms of offense, they will have to look to transfers and underclassmen to help them make that push into the NCAA Tournament. Last season, they ended 2023 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals and will need the help of Blake Neleman and an improved offense to get them back into the postseason. Similar to GT, Louisville also saw key departures, but reloads from the transfer portal. A six person transfer class, all with Division I experience, as well as Power 5, will help the Cardinals get into the top tier of the conference, and push teams like FSU, Clemson and Duke. Lastly in this episode, Brian and Gwyn discuss NC State. The Wolfpack are in a complete rebuilding year under 1st time Head Coach Lindsey Leftwich. Coming over from LSU, she brings over a decade of experience from a high level. Not only does coach Leftwich bring in a SEC transfer, but adds SEC and B1G experience to her coaching staff. After previewing the first 6 teams in the ACC, Brian and Gwyn catch up on Big Brother, as well as an exciting announcement that could impact Brian’s availability for some of the season! FSU beats Miami, moves to 10-0: Mike Norvell interview after Florida State Seminoles beat Hurricanes for third year in a row
It’s a cliche that comes true far too often — in rivalry games, forget the records and matchup on paper. No. 4 Florida State came into Saturday’s game against Miami as a 14.5-point favorite at kickoff, riding a two-game win streak in the series against the Hurricanes and on a 15-game win streak overall. FSU took a 10-point lead early, effectively shutting down Miami for the bulk of the first quarter outside two explosive pass plays but the Hurricanes stormed back in the second, holding the Seminoles to just one yard while racking up 129 yards and 10 points to tie things up. Things remained locked even over most of the third, with the two teams exchanging field goals, but fantastic punting by Alex Mastromanno set Miami up deep in its own territory on multiple drives and the Florida State defense took advantage, forcing five straight punts. Trey Benson once again had a huge scoring run for the Seminoles, reeling off a 38-yarder to put the Seminoles up 20-13. Two drives later, at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Keon Coleman reeled in his 10th touchdown of the year right after logging a massive 57-yard punt return. Trailing 27-13, Miami found new life off of a huge connection from freshman quarterback Emory Williams (starting in place for the benched Tyler Van Dyke) to Jacolby George for 85 yards to tighten things up to a single-touchdown lead for the Seminoles. The Hurricanes got the ball back with just over four minutes left on the clock. Facing fourth and 2 with just under three minutes left, Williams converted by taking off and rushing for it, with the play standing after review. He was injured on the play, hurting his arm as he fell and being put in a cast. Van Dyke entered the game with just over two minutes left in the game. Facing 3rd and 12, he hit Colbie Young first for a 14-yard catch and then for a 15-yard gain, setting up the Hurricanes on their own 49-yard line. After three straight incompletions, Miami faced a 4th and 10 with 48 seconds on the clock — a last ditch effort by Van Dyke was picked off by Jarrian Jones, ending the game and Miami’s upset hopes. FSU has 10 wins for the second straight year under Mike Norvell and wraps up ACC play unbeaten heading into non-conference matchups vs. North Alabama and Florida to end the season. College Football Week 11 Predictions, Daily Fantasy Plays: Seminoles vs. Hurricanes, Michigan vs. Penn State, Ole Miss vs. Georgia and more

College Football Week 11 Predictions, Daily Fantasy Plays: Seminoles vs. Hurricanes, Michigan vs. Penn State, Ole Miss vs. Georgia and more
Believe it or not, it is still hurricane season in the Atlantic region even though by this time of the year things are really winding down. That of course is a pattern for the meteorological hurricane season, but it also applies to the Miami Hurricanes of late. Look out in August and September, you never know what to expect in October and things go back to largely quiet in November. This year, the slide comes from the injuries and loss of confidence from QB Tyler Van Dyke. Most hurricanes are drawn to the poles (or polls in this football analogy), but the Canes largely offensive struggles have left them in a steering current destined for something like Gator Bowl. Now, don’t get me wrong. They’re certainly an overall better football team than the one that Florida State devoured in Miami Gardens last season. And they will be hungry looking for a win that they can plant their double red flags on this season. But if FSU’s offensive weapons are healthy, these Canes will be just a standard fish storm — in pictures, they look great in pictures but really they’re nothing more than flash that won’t threaten much of anything. College Football Week 10: Picks, predictions and daily fantasy plays as Playoff race tightens
Have you or a loved one fallen victim to emotional frustration, confusion or exasperation at the hand of the latest College Football Playoff rankings? On Tuesday when the rankings came out, as they revealed Oklahoma behind Alabama at No. 9 and 8 respectively I didn’t bat an eye. Then, they revealed Texas ahead of Alabama at No. 7 and the ESPN panelists began talking about how great of a job the committee did a superb job because Texas beat Bama head-to-head. But nobody had a problem with Oklahoma being two spots behind Texas who they beat? I got frustrated with the hypocrisy of it all and the complete sham all of it is and then I remembered a simple fact — How often have we thought at the end of the year the committee truly got it wrong? More or less, it all works out in the end. I mean at this point, we haven’t played the first weekend of November yet. There’s more than a month of meaningful football to go before we even make it to the conference championship games. It always finds a way to sort itself out. At the end of the day, this year will too. We’ve seen plenty of examples this year that teams with holes are finding losses (UNC, namely, but others too). We’ve got plenty of opportunities for teams to find more losses starting this weekend with multiple top-ten teams on the road — two of them facing ranked teams themselves. Don’t fret. We’ll all find the four best teams in December. Until then, enjoy the greatest sport in the world. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

FSU vs. Pitt breakdown: Inside look at Panthers as Seminoles look to clinch spot in ACC Championship
The Florida State Seminoles sit at a perfect 8-0 on the season after their victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this past Saturday. The Seminoles jumped out early before cruising to an easy 41-16 win. This weekend, FSU heads north for a showdown with the Pittsburgh Panthers. It’s been a rough season for the Panthers and head coach Pat Narduzzi. After opening the season with a victory, the Panthers have struggled to only one additional win on the season. Heading into Saturday, Pitt stands at a record of 2-6 with a tough four game stretch (including Florida State) to finish the season. Can the Panthers turn their season around on Saturday with a win over the Seminoles? We’ll discuss that more with Corey Cohen of the Pitt Talk Network. Each week, as part of our Line of Scrimmage series, we’ll be speaking with members of the beat that covers FSU’s upcoming opponent, getting all the details from those who know those teams best. Entering this season Pat Narduzzi had compiled a 62-41 record at Pitt, with his worst season being 6-5 in 2020. The Panthers came in as a possible dark horse for the ACC championship game but this season has been far from successful. Phil Jurkovec went from NFL draft prospect just two-three years ago to demotion, the Panthers are 2-6. High level, what has gone wrong for Pitt? Let’s focus on the quarterback position (if not covered already). Jurkovec transfers in from Boston College and was rather abysmal with a 50% completion percentage. He was moved to tight end and Christian Veilleux has been behind center since the Louisville game. What happened to Jurkovec and tell the fans what to expect from Veilleux? The backfield is a two-headed monster in C’Bo Flemister and Rodney Hammond Jr. The two backs are pretty close in carries and yards but do they have similar styles on the field? The Panthers have a pair of talented wide receivers in Konata Mumpfield and Bub Means. But for the first time this year, I think FSU is facing a pretty legitimate tight end receiving threat as well in Gavin Bartholomew. How might we see Pitt get these three involved on Saturday?  Finally on offense, let’s take a look at the line. The big guys have allowed 16 sacks on the season and only allowed the Panther to average 3.5 yards on the ground. It’s a young offensive line with four underclass men and one senior. Where has this line struggled and is there an area they’ve been successful? Flipping over to defense, it’s a defensive line that has accounted for 14 of the team’s 23 sacks. The Panthers appear to have a decent rotation on the inside with David Green, Deandre Jules and others while Dayon Hayes and freshman Samuel Okunlola are the names to know on the ends. What has allowed this group to have success in the backfield and is there an area teams have found success against this defensive line? Solomon DeShields leads this linebacking corp. On paper, this has shown to be a solid group stats wise and PFF grades wise. How would this group grade so far? Let’s jump back to the secondary. Donovan McMillon is the safety that flies over the field making the tackles while Phillip O’Brien and MJ Devonshire have split four interceptions on the season at cornerback. This appears to be a solid group. How will they stack up against Keon Coleman and the talented Seminole receivers? And finally, thoughts on how Saturday plays out Learn more about your ad choices.
