ForthHand Media

Hysteria 51 is your offbeat weekly podcast destination for all things weird and wonderful! We navigate the cosmic highways of UFOs, the alien-infested landscapes, and the enigmatic frontiers of the paranormal. With your hosts, Brent Hand and David Flora, alongside our cantankerous tin man, Conspiracy Bot (with a not-so-subtle desire to rule the world, doubling as our chief inquisitor into the unknown), we delve into unique mysteries, the inexplicable, and the downright unusual.

Each week we explore a fresh topic, making one thing crystal clear... the truth is out there, but you won’t find it here.

Our Editor's Take

Hysteria 51 investigates paranormal stories and conspiracy theories with humor and skepticism. Podcast hosts Brent Hand and David Flora agree that some stories are so interesting they're worth telling, even if they aren't factual. They say everyone should consider the storyteller's intention. It's no fun to debunk everything.

The cohosts joke that one guarantee of this podcast is that they'll get some facts wrong. Their slogan is, "The truth is out there, but you won't find it here." There's still enough truth to many of their featured tales to prompt curiosity. They talk to guests who've experienced supernatural events. They also share their own stories.

David was a guest on the Hysteria 51 podcast before becoming a cohost in 2022. From 2016 to 2022, the show's cofounder, John Goforth, cohosted with Brent. In one episode, John and Brent discuss apocalypses. One host has an emergency bag packed. He lists the contents, including pencils and a waterproof notebook. The other host teases him, saying he won't be in a World War I foxhole writing letters. They describe one doomsday prepper who trained his own dog army. He performed surgery on the dogs, giving them titanium teeth.

The podcast hosts set off their fire alarm trying MRE (meals ready to eat). Pouring water into their beef ravioli and vegetarian chili causes a chemical reaction that triggers the alarm. The ravioli tastes like Chef Boyardee. The chili needs salt. They reveal which side items taste delicious. They debate packing Vienna sausages in an apocalypse. One host would prefer worms. The other eats the sausages and drinks the juice for enjoyment. He recommends the spicy ones.

In another episode of the podcast, Brent and David talk to Laura Krantz. She is the acclaimed author of Is There Anybody Out There? Like David, Brent, and John, Laura believes in paranormal possibilities. She has a sense of humor about them. Brent thinks some content in the conspiracy genre is too serious.

Bigfoot, shadow people, and galactic federations are fun to talk about. Hysteria 51 ensures that. New podcast episodes come out each Wednesday.

Ghosts of the Imagination: The Philip Experiment | 385
Imagine a group of ordinary people coming together with one extraordinary goal: to create a ghost from scratch. That’s exactly what happened in the early 1970s with the Philip Experiment, a fascinating parapsychological study led by Dr. A.R.G. Owen and the Toronto Society for Psychical Research. The team invented a fictional character, Philip Aylesford, a 17th-century English nobleman with a tragic backstory, and then set out to bring him to life through sheer willpower and collective imagination. What started as a curious experiment in human consciousness quickly escalated into something far more mysterious. The group reported witnessing strange phenomena—tables moving on their own, eerie knocks answering their questions, and even glimpses of a ghostly presence. But was this really the work of a spirit, or just the power of the human mind? Join us this week as we dive deep into the eerie world of the Philip Experiment, where belief and reality collide in the most unexpected ways… on Hysteria 51.Special thanks to this week’s research sources: VideosThe Philip Experiment - https://youtu.be/uhT0-n9OH8M?si=kGPGRv6pcmheHSF9The Quiet Ones - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2235779/WebsitesPhilip Experiment Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_experimentRanker - https://www.ranker.com/list/philip-experiment-paranormal-study/jodi-smithDread Central - https://www.dreadcentral.com/editorials/358897/the-philip-experiment-we-want-ghosts-to-be-real/Live About - https://www.liveabout.com/how-to-create-a-ghost-2594058C. Lost in Translation: The Unsolved Beale Ciphers | 374
“I have deposited in the county of Bedford, about four miles from Buford's [Tavern], in an excavation or vault, six feet below the surface of the ground, the following articles, belonging jointly to the parties whose names are given in number three, herewith: The first deposit consisted of ten hundred and fourteen pounds of gold, and thirty-eight hundred and twelve pounds of silver, deposited Nov. eighteen nineteen. The second was made Dec. eighteen twenty-one, and consisted of nineteen hundred and seven pounds of gold, and twelve hundred and eighty-eight of silver; also jewels, obtained in St. Louis in exchange to save transportation, and valued at thirteen thousand dollars. The above is securely packed in iron pots, with iron covers. The vault is roughly lined with stone, and the vessels rest on solid stone, and are covered with others. Paper number one describes the exact locality of the vault, so that no difficulty will be had in finding it.” - Thomas Jefferson Beale, from the second cipher text of the Beale Papers, allegedly written in 1822.Is it time to channel your inner Gus Chiggins and get to hunting for gold? Or maybe all of this a cunning ruse or just a flat out lie? Solway Photoshoot: The Best of H51 | 373
We are off this week.... sort of. We have a best of show, but first we dive in to continue or JFK Lose Your Own Adventure Sage. Then, it's back to 1964 to visit Jim and his photo shenanigans once again! Original DescriptionNothing worse than a photobomb. There you are minding your own business, taking a picture of your lovely daughter and next thing you know some idiot time traveler / astronaut / inter-dimensional being drops his/her/its mug into your frame. And while we’ve all been through it, there’s a famous version we’re talking about this week - The Solway Firth Spaceman. Where did the other figure come from? Could this be a real, true documentation of a close encounter? How much is free film for a year actually worth? We dive in deep and see what develops. Plus, Conspiracy Bot actually did research this week (albeit unsuccessfully, but...ya know...baby steps). Brent channels his inner British housewife from the 1960s (it wasn’t a huge leap). And John starts talking about time travel again (we wish it existed so we could go back and stop him). All of that and more on the podcast that doesn’t do a ton of photo shoots, but when we do they’re in the UK and they involve a spaceman – Hysteria 51.Email us your favorite WEIRD news stories:weird@hysteria51.comSupport the ShowGet exclusive content & perks as well as an ad and sponsor free experience at https://www.patreon.com/Hysteria51 from just $1ShopBe the Best Dressed at your Cult Meeting!https://www.teepublic.com/stores/hysteria51?ref_id=9022Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
