Our Editor's Take

ICYMI is a podcast about internet culture and what people are talking about online this week. It comes in 30- to 40-minute-long episodes. Each episode includes a guest or a guest cohost.

ICYMI is an acronym for "In Case You Missed It." But the definition of ICYMI is bigger than that. It's an abbreviation whose conciseness captures the increasingly transient nature of the zeitgeist. The podcast gives listeners a quick wrap-up of the latest news in the digital world. Every episode a guest—often a journalist—comes on to discuss a big event. Whether it's SXSW, social media's Wild West culture, or raw-meat diets, it's getting airtime. The show also discusses topics like Ozempic, reversing plastic surgery, and Ticketmaster woes.

Listeners may appreciate the lighthearted tone of ICYMI. But the podcast also provides some real insight into the evolution of the internet. Guests come to chat about the loud kid on TikTok or Jojo Siwa's coming out. But they also engage in serious discussions around regulation and monetization strategies.

The host is Rachelle Hampton, a culture reporter at Slate. Hampton grew up along with the internet, Harry Styles, and American Girl dolls. She came of age alongside social media. As a result, her perspective is that of an insider. Her love of history and journalistic eye make her a thoughtful analyst and critic. This helps make ICYMI an enjoyable show. For the show's first season, Hampton cohosted the show with Madison Malone Kircher, a digital Style journalist for The New York Times.

ICYMI is a production of Slate. The online magazine reports on American current affairs, culture, and politics. It offers many high-quality podcasts about politics, history, and culture.
