Getting a Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and What to do
Esther Pearl - North Central Region Program Director- Alzheimer’s Association CT Chapter presents "The Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer's."  Esther is a skilled and engaging educator who brings her knowledge and personal experience to help families and caregivers to understand warning signs, detection, and how to move forward in getting a diagnosis and support.Esther’s entry into the world of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s was, like many others, unexpected, devastating and life changing.  A year after marrying, her husband was diagnosed with Atypical Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, he was only 56.  Through a random encounter at a health fair, Esther and Mark became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association, CT Chapter.  Support groups, social programs and tearful calls to the Helpline became their lifelines. Because of their somewhat unusual situation in regard to age, work status and retirement planning, they faced additional hurdles in navigating the world of Alzheimer’s.  Esther was soon asked to speak at various events and share their story.  Professionally, she has spent her career educating others in the fields of higher education, employment, financial issues, credit union services and career services.  In 2017, Esther joined the association as Program Director in order to honor Mark and their joint commitment to fighting Alzheimer’s.  She holds a Master’s of Science in Counseling from Central Connecticut State University and a BS in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.  The Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association serves the more than 80 thousand people living with Alzheimer's in our state, their caregivers and people concerned about brain health. We offer free education classes, support groups, care consultations and activities for those in the early stages of dementia. We have robust advocacy efforts on both the state and local level, and raise money through events like our Walk to End Alzheimer's in the Fall to help fund research to get closer to new treatments and a cure.24/7 Helpline: 1.800.272.3900Website: alz.org/ctRegister for Walk: act.alz.org/connecticutGeneral email: ctchapter@alz.org

Understanding Prostate Cancer
Dennis E. Golden is a a two-time prostate cancer survivor. He holds a master’s degree in social communications from New York University and has 40+ years of experience as a marketing executive, consultant, author and professional speaker. His wife says "it keeps him out of trouble."While women openly discuss breast cancer awareness, men tend to retreat into silence and denial when facing any prostate issue. With over 3 million American men currently living with prostate cancer and almost 200,000 new cases every year why is there silence?Like most men, Dennis believes that prostate cancer was the “good cancer” that men live with. But he was wrong and soon discovered it is the second leading cause of death of thousands of men behind lung cancer. With so much misinformation out there, he decided it was time to make a difference. In 2014, he founded the National Prostate Cancer Awareness Foundation. The single mission of the Foundation is to raise national awareness about the hidden dangers of undiagnosed prostate cancer. While 90% of women and their partners are aware of breast cancer’s warning signs, only 40% of men know the warning signs for prostate cancer. The Foundation’s goal is to increase awareness levels to 80%.Then recognizing the strong bond men can forge when facing a common threat, he launched The Prostate Cancer Coach in 2018 with the full support and cooperation of the National Prostate Cancer Awareness Foundation. Their joint goal is to engage men and their partners in one-on-one personal conversations where they are free to explore, ask questions and learn from someone who has walked the uncertain path of prostate cancer before them. Granting Senior Wishes

Granting Senior Wishes
ABOUT THIS EPISODE:Senior Wishes CT is a 501C3 that believes that a thriving senior population is an important part of a strong community.  To that end, our goal is to enrich the lives of senior citizens in Connecticut by granting them wishes that will improve their lives and as a result enhance the community they call home. Providing much needed items or services to assist seniors in need, Senior Wishes CT is helping older adults, one wish at a time. ABOUT THE GUEST:As a Medicare/Medicaid insurance consultant to senior citizens, Senior Wishes CT co-founder Traci O’Brien has spent a lot of time in senior centers, senior housing, food banks and pantries. Her years of working with seniors exposed her to the multitude of needs (outside of healthcare) that many of our older population face.Traci has met senior citizens who couldn’t afford Christmas presents for their grandkids or even a bus ticket to visit them. Others had appliances breaking down or the need for a certain type of therapeutic shoe (that insurance wouldn’t cover it) -- none of which was in their limited budget.  Compelled to help, Traci was using her own funds to “grant wishes” to these people but it wasn’t a sustainable solution. So Senior Wishes CT was born.  Traci’s best friend Christine Brown who also works in the insurance industry came onboard to propel the concept into reality. Together their goal is to improve the lives of senior in need, one wish at a time.
