He focuses on the people and sounds of community radio: from shortwave to pirate radio stations operating from church basements, bodegas and bedrooms. He has created a Brooklyn Pirate Radio Sound Map and he’s now in partnership with the sound preservation program of the Library of Congress. Peter Cunningham tells stories with his photos. He pairs images and so abstract photos are in relationship with each other and we wonder what’s about to happen. He was an assistant to the great Henry Cartier Bresson in 1975 when Bresson was making a photo documentary about New Jersey. He went onto shoot stars like Madonna and Springsteen and Broadway actors. As his career unfolded he became more interested in watching how light illuminates images so that they become abstracted. Omar Román De Jesús is a Queer LatinX choreographer and company director who creates rhythmic narratives through contemporary dance forms, improvisation, and dance theater techniques.  He began formal dance training in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. He won the Championship Cup and Gold Medal at the National Dance Competition in Puerto Rico. He’s since danced with Parsons Dance, Ballet Hispánico and Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company. He was one of the winning choreographers for the Joffrey Academy of Dance's 8th annual Winning Works Choreographic Competition, and the first person commissioned to create an original work on Jacob Jonas The Company. Yasen Peyankov who trained at Bulgaria’s elite theater school, left Sofia immediately after the Berlin Wall came down and went to Chicago to act, direct and form his own theatre group. In 2002 he became an ensemble member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and has acted, directed and translated plays for them ever since. His translation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull performed in the round was his most recent production for the 2021 – 2022 season. He’s also a professor of drama at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Measured, wry, thoughtful and modest, Yasen has retained his cultural identity and also become a very American artist. Canadian audio artist, journalist and actor, Chris Brookes lives in St John’s, Newfoundland near Battery Hill, where Marconi set up his receiving tower in the first transatlantic wireless experiment.  Brookes began his career running a theatre company creating documentary style productions that influenced government legislation. Growing up she was a pianist and a singer, and in her twenties, Victoria Bond become the first woman to receive a doctorate in orchestral conducting from the Juilliard School. Since then she’s served as music director and conductor for major orchestras. Composition is her first love she explains, but it’s taken time to carve out the space to devote herself to it. She’s composed music in nearly every genre: symphonic works, chamber music, keyboard, operas and other vocal music, and music for dance. Many of the subjects of her operas are powerful women - most recently she wrote a work for narrator and orchestra inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This week's guest is Nathan Yungerberg. For more than 14 years he called himself a playwright. He had many residencies writing for prestigious theater companies like the Black Theater of Harlem and the Cherry Lane Theater. However, he describes the experience of writing for the American theater as traumatic because there are so few opportunities for new plays to be produced.  But the day he decided to call himself a Storyteller, everything changed!  He moved into different genres. He’s now writing episodes for a podcast epic drama based on Greek myths and aimed at young teenagers. Judith Sloan tells stories about her community where 167 languages are spoken. In 2003 she and her husband Warren Lehrer published Crossing the BLVD a kaleidoscopic view of refugees and new immigrants living in the borough of Queens New York. Since then, Judith has explored new multimedia forms combining fiction and documentary to enable teenagers and women from war torn countries to chronicle their stories. She’s received grants from the Queens Council on the Arts, the NY Council on the Arts Grant and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Peregrine Andrews (also known as Pez) spent 6 years in BBC Radio working as an engineer and studio manager before going freelance in 1996 and subsequently setting up his company Moving Air. He was in at the beginning of independent production and his contracts were with the BBC, other independents and also corporations. He has won multiple awards for the radio and TV shows and films that he’s mixed and sound designed. He’s also a producer in his own right and he explains why he is very picky about the ideas that he takes on to produce himself. Playful Polymath Jack Klaff is an actor – academic, writer- lecturer, classical and character actor – and solo show creator/performer. Still very much in touch with his South African roots, he’s written and performed in over twenty plays about his homeland and says there are many more stories to tell ‘about violence, pain and injustice.  He can’t escape the fame he’s garnered appearing as John D Branon in Stars Wars early in his career. His agent had balked about his doing a role that didn't seem worthy of him  - no one had an inkling of what would happen. Klaff says George Lucas was totally confident and in control, soft-spoken and decisive. Jack didn’t get much pay but admits that going to Star Wars conventions since is lucrative.  He dishes some dirt about the traditions of the Royal Shakespeare Company which he says ‘was like the South African army’ but did learn a raw forceful style of speaking the Bard and is grateful for that. He’s passionate about popularizing science and as a professor, he’s given talks and chaired many debates about intriguing scientific concepts. Sarah Elmaleh is comfortable and happy portraying roles that reflect the various facets of her identity. As a director and voice actor for videogames, Sarah believes in a collaborative process where actors contribute to tone, structure, writing and content.  A keen player growing up, she’s still passionate about the growth possibilities and cross fertilization of games but she doesn’t necessarily want to play all the games that she’s had a role in or that she’s directed.  Her characters run the gamut of villains, monsters, heroines and creatures. Text is only part of what she has to vocalize. Actor and pianist Mike Iveson has been an ensemble member of the innovative Elevator Repair Service (ERS) theater ensemble since 2006. He’s written music for them and then wrote and produced two musicals of his own. He says other performers spent the two years when stages were dark during Covid, honing their skills learning new ones and expanding their range. Instead he found that he was scaling back.  As he talks to Jude it becomes clear that he had been wearing too many hats: composer, lyricist, playwright, conductor, pianist, director, producer and actor. I have seen the Sidney Lumet "Murder on the Orient Express" literally dozens of times. It's kind of the reason you see that icon of Albert Finney as Poirot as my avatar in Gmail. Am a big fan of L'Avventura by Antonioni too. Not Antonioni generally though. Weirdly dry. I love the plays of Jackie Sibblies Drury very much. She can do no wrong in my eyes. There's too much music to take note of. I like one of the recent Kendrick Lamar singles, I like plenty of his songs, also Destroyer and New Pornographers which are very Gen X of me, and I have had one of those Olivia Rodrigo songs in my head for days ("Good For You"). A native of Singapore, Hansel’s acted in the US for sixteen years and his roles have taken him across the country from Broadway to summer stock. He’s had to do his share of appearances in The King and I and Miss Saigon productions, but talks about his conviction that it’s his responsibility to give authenticity to these roles. He’s performed in new plays at The Flea Theater and the Public Theater and returns to Singapore to perform in new work at W!LD RICE Theatre Company. Author, actor, and raconteur Robin Hirsch ran the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York’s Greenwich Village for 41 years until he was forced to close it in 2019 due to rising rent. The restaurant was renowned for its basement nightclub where singer/songwriters, jazz bands, poets and comics played on a tiny stage. Shows were short so that different groups perform each night. Robin who’s a writer and actor, has performed several shows about his life and the prejudice he felt being a German Jew in post war London. In New York he found endless outlets for creative expression. He established a stable of talent at his café where people incubated new work and the famous rubbed shoulders with the aspiring. Career advice? Robin says he’s always stumbled into opportunities and grasped them but nothing was planned. He’s an introvert who has had to learn to be an unflappable MC, host and artistic director.
