Precision in the Pulpit: A Labor of Love with Paul Mowery
Paul Mowery's early years of Christian ministry were plagued by toxicity and leadership dysfunction, and so he has put deliberate work into creating ecosystems of accountability, spiritual health and plural leadership. He talks with Mike about some of the weaknesses that are inherent with the so-called "Moses Model" of pastoral leadership, as well as the importance of precision in sermon delivery. It is always worth putting work into finding a clearer and shorter way to express something!  “If we say too much in a single sermon, we may give a field of wheat instead of a loaf of bread.” - Charles Spurgeon." Paul will be a panelist at  our next in-person Training Weekend for men and women of all ages at The Creek Church in Indianapolis, Indiana! In this interactive seminar, attendees will learn from experienced practitioners from the stage and meet in groups and build ongoing relationships with coaches and mentors who want to help you grow in your personal study and public proclamation of God's Word. The Creek ChurchIndianapolis, IndianaOctober 27-28, 2023Recommended Episodes: Marcus Honeysett on policies, plurality and prioritizing character over comptencies  https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/spiritual-character-outweighs-technical-competencies-marcus-honeysettTerry Mitchell on preaching that helps sufferers: https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/digging-deep-into-the-word-to-help-those-who-are-suffering-with-terry-michaels  Paul LeBoutillier on self absorption  https://cgnmedia.org/podcast/expositors-collective/episode/self-absorption-is-the-death-knell-to-faithful-preaching-with-paul-leboutillier  For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. FAQ with Nick Cady + Mike Neglia

FAQ with Nick Cady + Mike Neglia
Nick and Mike spend time answering some questions that have come our way about preaching while in pain (both physical and emotional), some objections about Christ centered preaching (isn't this just shoehorning Jesus into passages that He isn't actually referenced in?) some of the practicalities about women teaching the Bible in complementarian churches, addressing controversial topics (and sinful practices) from the pulpit while remaining gracious in tone and avoiding "Christianese" in preaching so that we are intelligible to visitors. Resources Mentioned:  Is it a stretch to say that everything in the Bible points to Jesus? - Theology for the People Podcast featuring Nick + Mikehttps://anchor.fm/theologyforthepeople/episodes/Christ-Centered-Hermeneutics---Part-1-Is-it-a-stretch-to-say-that-everything-in-the-Bible-points-to-Jesus----with-Mike-Neglia-e17q0sdResponding to Objections to Christ-Centered Hermeneutics - Theology for the People Podcast featuring Nick + Mike : https://anchor.fm/theologyforthepeople/episodes/Christ-Centered-Hermeneutics---Part-2-Responding-to-Objections-to-Christ-Centered-Hermeneutics---with-Mike-Neglia-e18563k“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”― C.S. Preaching The Efficacious Word Of God with Jeremy Kimble
Sep 12 2023
Preaching The Efficacious Word Of God with Jeremy Kimble
Efficacious means the "ability to produce the intended result". When used to describe the Word of God it means that when God speaks it has transformative power, and it results in the transformation of the believer, both from death to life and in progressing in holiness. Dr Jeremy Kimble believes in the efficacy of the Scriptures and has written a helpful book that both explains and argues for the efficacy of God's Word, and then gives VERY practical applications to the life of the Christian, the counsellor, the parent, the leader and the preacher. In this conversation, Jeremy speaks about an arresting sermon that he heard as a young man, and the transformative impact it had on him, and then goes on to answer questions about the necessity of preaching, the MIM and the MIT of sermon preparation and delivery and plenty of on-the-ground practical advice and encouragement. "The amazing thing is that everyone who reads the Bible has the same joyful thing to say about it. In every land, in every language, it is the same tale: where that Book is read, not with the eyes only, but with the mind and heart, the life is changed. Sorrowful people are comforted, sinful people are transformed, peoples who were in the dark walk in the light. Is it not wonderful to think that this Book, which is such a mighty power if it gets a chance to work in an honest heart, is in our hands today?" - Amy Carmichael Dr. Jeremy Kimble is Associate Professor of Theology at Cedarville University. He is passionate about teaching college students and graduate students the truth of God’s Word. His hope is that through his courses, students will grow in their love for God and others, rightly understand the grand narrative of Scripture, and apply theological truths to everyday life. He is committed to teaching in the classroom, mentoring students in smaller settings, and speaking in churches, camps, and conference settings. He served in pastoral ministry for eight years prior to his time at Cedarville. Academic interests include biblical and systematic theology, ecclesiology, hermeneutics and homiletics, discipleship, and spiritual growth, and fun interests include family time, hiking, biking, and reading.Resources Mentioned: Behold and Become:  Reading Scripture for Transformation - Jeremy Kimble: https://www.kregel.com/jeremy-m-kimble/behold-and-become/  He is Not Silent - Al Mohler: https://www.moodypublishers.com/he-is-not-silent/ Knowing God - J.I. "The Bible is a Book about Jesus" - Christ-Centered Hermeneutics with Nick Cady

"The Bible is a Book about Jesus" - Christ-Centered Hermeneutics with Nick Cady
The Bible holds its greatest meaning and richness when interpreted through the lens of Jesus-shaped goggles, revealing its Main Character and guiding us towards explicitly Christian sermons. It is through this transformative perspective that the profound wisdom of the scriptures emerges, showcasing how each passage, story, and verse converges to illuminate the life, teachings, and grace of Jesus. Nick Cady and Mike Neglia joined forces to lead an enlightening workshop the picturesque setting of Boise Idaho. Their mission was to equip attendees with the tools to deliver Gospel-centered sermons that resonated with the essence of the gospel from any part of the Bible.Throughout the event, participants immersed themselves in a captivating atmosphere of learning, exploration, and revelation. They learned to discern the gospel's truth and significance in every page of the Bible, discovering how its messages beautifully interweave with the redemptive narrative of Jesus Christ. With eloquence and expertise, the speakers showcased the power of preaching with authenticity, relevancy, and heartfelt conviction. Participants were encouraged to connect biblical truths with the real-life experiences and struggles of their audience, bridging the gap between the ancient texts and contemporary challenges. The ultimate goal was to point people towards the transformative power of the gospel, urging them to embrace the profound love, redemption, and grace found in Christ. As the event concluded, the attendees left equipped and inspired to proclaim the gospel from every passage, impacting lives and transforming hearts with the eternal truth of Jesus's love.Recommended Episodes: How to Preach Christ from Every Text:  https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/3/26/episode-40-how-to-preach-christ-from-every-text Heralding the Voice of Christ - Glen Scrivener : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2021/5/18/heralding-the-voice-of-christ-glen-scrivener Showing the Gospel in All of Scripture: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/10/7/showing-the-gospel-in-all-of-scripture-char-brodersen-pete-nelson-mike-neglia Is it a stretch to say that everything in the Bible points to Jesus? -https://anchor.fm/theologyforthepeople/episodes/Christ-Centered-Hermeneutics---Part-1-Is-it-a-stretch-to-say-that-everything-in-the-Bible-points-to-Jesus----with-Mike-Neglia-e17q0sdResponding to Objections to Christ-Centered Hermeneutics: https://anchor.fm/theologyforthepeople/episodes/Christ-Centered-Hermeneutics---Part-2-Responding-to-Objections-to-Christ-Centered-Hermeneutics---with-Mike-Neglia-e18563k For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Scripture Memorization and Spiritual Formation with Kieran Lenahan

Scripture Memorization and Spiritual Formation with Kieran Lenahan
Kieran Lenahan believes that so much of who we become is influenced by what we allow our minds to dwell on. He has prioritised scripture memorization as a spiritual discipline which is allowing his mind to consistently and rhythmically come back to the truth of God's Word again and again.  He shares with Mike a story of when his life was directed and a decision was clarified for him through a memorised passage from Deuteronomy and they speculate on ways in which a church community, which is memorizing the same scripture passages might greet each other, and how the preaching   (and discipleship)  ministry could be enhanced.  Kieran has developed a text-message based scripture memorization system that has served him and his community called Malachi Daily; to sign up (for free) visit  https://malachidaily.com/?via=expositor-s-collectiveKieran Lenahan is a husband, foster/adoptive dad to 2 toddlers and an entrepreneur working at the intersection of entrepreneurship and spiritual formation. He's a coach to faith driven entrepreneurs and the co-founder of Malachi Daily, a subscription service that helps Jesus followers memorize 1 passage of Scripture a week and learn its context, via text messages. When he’s not working, you can find him on the basketball court, in a body of water or spending time with his family. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52, ESV)“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”Psalm 1:1-6Recommended Episodes: Jonathan Pennington on the benefits of scripture memorization (and the Sermon on the Mount) https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/7/12/the-preaching-style-of-jesus-with-jonathan-penningtonDave Sylvester on meditation and contemplation during his sermon preparation process:  https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/10/1/episode-67-the-preachers-meditation Suzy Silk in Biblical Meditation: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/7/5/seeing-christ-responsibly-in-the-old-testament-suzy-silk For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Leaving Behind Our Hidden Shame For His Glorious Grace - Ray Ortlund

Leaving Behind Our Hidden Shame For His Glorious Grace - Ray Ortlund
Ray Ortlund speaks with Mike about his Sunday morning routine, that consists of prayer and “major surgery” on his sermon manuscript, as well as an explanation of what his new post as a  Canon Theologian and Catechist actually entails. The majority of the conversation is spent speaking about the power of the gospel to overcome hidden shame and lead people into the glorious freedom of the grace of Christ. Ray’s latest book “The Death of Porn : Men of Integrity Building a World of Nobility” is published by Crossway and is available everywhere.  Pornography may seem inescapable, but God can free us from its destructive power. The gospel replaces the dehumanizing lies of pornography with this surprising truth: God created us as royalty. How then can we reclaim our God-given identity to take a stand against—and ultimately starve—the predatory porn industry? At the conclusion of the interview Ray gives advice on how to reach 71 years old and not just remain faithful to Christ, but flourishing in relationship with Him and loving Him more than ever. Ray Ortlund is the President of Renewal Ministries, the Pastor to Pastors at Immanuel Church Nashville, and a Canon Theologian with the Anglican Church in North America. He is the author of several books, including the Preaching the Word commentaries on Isaiah and Proverbs and Marriage and the Mystery of the Gospel. He is also a contributor to the ESV Study Bible. In June 2018 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. With its aim of ‘service above self’, Paul sees his Rotary involvement as an expression of Christian ministry.Ministry ExperienceAs Senior Minister of Central Baptist Church, Chelmsford (1993-2014) he transformed a traditional declining city-centre church into a strong vibrant, growing fellowship; at the time he left there were 399 committed members, together with a much larger church community. As Principal of Spurgeon’s College, London (1986-1993) he doubled the student enrolment, increased the faculty by one-third, and developed new patterns of ministerial trainingAs Pastor of Altrincham Baptist Church, Cheshire (1973-1986) he enabled a small declining church to develop into a strong virile church, quadrupled in size (from 83 to 300+ members). As a BMS Missionary in Congo/Zaire (1990-1992) he taught Greek and New Testament in the Protestant Theological Faculty of the National University.Prior to going up to Cambridge Paul served as a ‘Time for God’ worker with the German Baptists (1962-63), helping with Baptist youth work in Southern Germany.Interests Beyond MinistryIn Who’s Who? In the words of the cover blurb:This is a book for pastors – and for any Christian – who want the “inside story” of the pains and triumphs of a Christian leader. He has updated two popular pastoral resources. The first is Happy Ever After? A workbook for couples preparing for marriage (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017). Biblically-based and solidly practical, it covers everything from money to matrimonial disagreement, from coming to terms with the past to sharing jobs in the house. The second, A Loved One Dies: help in the first few weeks (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017), gives down-to earth advice on how to arrange the funeral service, and the many other practical matters that arise after a death. It also provides clear thoughts on the Christian understanding of death to help the bereaved discover hope where at first there is only sadness.Following his 2017 survey of the reading habits of British ministers – the first survey of its kind in the UK, he published a major 8000-word article, ‘Ministers’ Reading Habits’, Baptist Quarterly 49 (January 2018).  The full analysis together with further reflections is found on this website. He has written three books on ministerial retirement.Retirement Matters for Ministers: A report into how into how Baptist ministers experience retirement (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2018), is based on a research project and explores issues such as the transition to retirement; housing and finance; health; friendships; family; and ministry in retirement.Entering New Territory: Why are retired Baptist ministers moving to Anglican churches? (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2019) is based on a second research project and explores the underlying theological issues.Making the Most of Retirement (Bible Reading Fellowship, Abingdon 2020) was written for ministers of all denominations and is the first such book for ministers written from a distinctively British perspective. His two latest books are:Fifty Lessons in Ministry: Reflections on Fifty Years of Ministry (Darton, Longman & Todd, London 2020) written to coincide with his 50th anniversary of ordinationThere is Hope! Preaching at Funerals will be published by IVP and surprisingly is the first British guide to preaching at funerals. He has edited two major books:Ministry Today UK: UK 1994-2018, (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2018) is a ‘cornucopia of pastoral wisdom’, whose eight volumes contain all 520 articles of the former journal of MTUK.A College of Peers: The College of Baptist Ministers 2013-2021 (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2021) is a story of a group of a group of ministers with a passion for ministry and should be of interest to all who are concerned for the wellbeing of ministry in Baptist churches.Together with Terry Calkin he has written a series short books on leadership for pastors in the developing world: viz. The Passionate Leader: The Four Foundations of Leadership, The Visionary Leader, The Leader with Character, and The Gifted Leader.Other writings currently in print are:Happy Ever After? Preaching in the Power of the Holy Spirit with Brian Brodersen

Preaching in the Power of the Holy Spirit with Brian Brodersen
Brian Brodersen believes that preaching is not an end in and of itself, rather, it is a means to the greater end of knowing, loving, worshipping and serving God. Biblical Preaching (preaching the way it is defined and modeled in the Bible) is God’s word, spoken by God’s servants, through God’s Spirit, in God’s power. How to Assure We are Preaching in the Power of the SpiritA disposition, a bent, a leaning. An attitude of dependence on the Holy Spirit. A constant awareness of our own weakness: “I was with you in weakness, in fear and in much trembling.” “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.” Preach the Word! There will be many temptations along the way to move from preaching the Word to preaching something else: politics, nationalism, social justice, prosperity, personal success and happiness, and the list goes on. People will often find a biblical text from which to springboard into their pet doctrine. This is not preaching the Word and the Holy Spirit will not honor such preaching with His power. There might very well be the power of persuasion, personality, passion, articulation, perspiration etc. but it won’t be the power of the Spirit. The Spirit honors the preaching of the Word—taking the biblical text and bringing out its meaning for all to see, understand and apply.  The Process of Preparing to Preach-a. Consciousness of the supernatural element.b. Pray for the Lord’s leading on what to preach.c. Seek the Lord’s assistance even in the preparation of your message.      III.       Preaching-Take that same dependency you’ve had through the whole process into the pulpit with you.Remember that you are the mouthpiece of God to bring His word to His people. “If anyone speaks, let them speak as the oracle of God.” 1Pet 4:11Be open to going off script, don’t be afraid to go to places you hadn’t prepared to go. The Spirit will often send us off on diversions but will also get us back on the main road. Be cautiously spontaneous. You’ll find over time those spontaneous diversions are more often than not prophetic words that go straight to the heart of the hearers who then receive the Word, not as a human word, but as it is in truth the Word of God that works effectively in those who believe.  “You can have knowledge, and you can be meticulous in your preparation; but without the unction  of the Holy Spirit you will have no power, and your preaching will not be effective.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones  “The gospel’s force lies beyond the power of the preacher. Paul preaches without shame in his delivery skills because he trusts that the Spirit of God will use the Word the apostle proclaims to shatter the hardness of the human heart in ways no stage technique or philosophical construct can rival.” - Brian ChapellFor information about our upcoming training events in Indiana Califronia visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Preaching Through Tension And Division with Matthew Kim, Paul Hoffman and Mike Neglia
Jun 6 2023
Preaching Through Tension And Division with Matthew Kim, Paul Hoffman and Mike Neglia
Division, tension and conflict has always been part of life in a fallen world, but it feels as if it has only increased over the past years. How can preachers address contentious issues in a gracious yet truthful way? How can we balance the tightrope as we attempt to offering a unifying word to a divided congregation? Drs Matthew Kim and Paul Hoffman offer seven steps towards preaching that  a seven-step model for promoting reconciliation that unifies rather than causes unnecessary division1. The Theological Step: The Sins of Pride and Prejudice2. The Contextual Step: America's Past and Present Reality3. The Personal Step: Facing Our Sin and Acknowledging Our Prejudices4. The Positional Step: We Are Heralds, Not Heart-Changers5. The Methodological Step: A Homiletic for Reconciliation and Unity6. The Practical Step: Pre-Sermon, Mid-Sermon, and Post-Sermon Practices7. The Categorical Step: Biblical Themes and Texts "Preaching has become something of a dreaded task. With self-appointed authorities declaring on social media what pastors should and should not address--and telling people to leave their churches if pastors don't say the supposed right thing--the pastor bears the impossible task of speaking God's Word to a disinterested and divided world. In a day where cultural land mines abound, the preacher can either dismiss the concerns of her congregation as invalid or irrelevant or become a prisoner to the narratives and perspectives of the moment. Kim and Hoffman give us a better way. They excavate a treasury of theological resources to address the chief causes of division and map the terrain of our cultural dynamics and historical context. They teach us to become aware of our own lens as preachers and to rely on the Spirit to breathe the Word of God to the people of God. The result is a stunning, scholarly, current, and critical guide for preachers to take seriously the complexity of preaching in a rapidly changing world."Glenn Packiam Matthew D. Kim (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is professor of practical theology and holder of the Hubert H. and Gladys S. Raborn Chair of Pastoral Leadership at Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University, in Waco, Texas. He previously served as the George F. Bennett Professor of Preaching and Practical Theology, director of the Haddon W. Robinson Center for Preaching, and director of Mentored Ministry at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is a past president of the Evangelical Homiletics Society and has over twenty years of preaching and teaching experience. Kim has written or edited many books, including Preaching to People in Pain (winner of a Christianity Today 2022 Book Award) and Preaching with Cultural Intelligence (the 2018 Preaching magazine Book of the Year). Paul A. Is It Possible To Be Too Vulnerable In The Pulpit? - Josh White

Is It Possible To Be Too Vulnerable In The Pulpit? - Josh White
Josh White, pastor of Door of Hope church in Portland, Oregon, speaks with Mike about the necessity of being honest with ourselves and honest about ourselves as we preach the gospel. They speak about the importance of confession, vulnerability and honesty.  “Truth through Personality is our description of real preaching. The truth must come really through the person, not merely over his lips, not merely into his understanding and out through his pen. It must come through his character, his affections, his whole intellectual and moral being. It must come genuinely through him. I think that granting equal intelligence and study, here is the great difference which we feel between two preachers of the Word. The Gospel has come over one of them and reaches us tinged and flavored with his superficial characteristics, belittled with his littleness. The Gospel has come through the other, and we receive it impressed and winged with all the earnestness that there is in him. In the first case the man has been but a printing machine or a trumpet. In the other case he has been a true man and a real messenger of God.”  Phillips Brooks (1835 – 1893) In Stumbling Toward Eternity: Losing and Finding Ourselves in the Cross of Jesus (Multnomah) writer, pastor, and recording artist Josh White offers confessional stories and theological insights as he interprets the pain and trauma of his own past, the complicated “mixture” of the present, and the beautiful uncertainty of the future through the lens of grace. Using crisp and honest prose, White reveals why the most familiar symbol of Christianity—the cross of Jesus—is also the most misunderstood. He shows us why the goal of our desperate existence is not arriving at perfection or success but knowing the crucified Christ.
