On January 19th, 1924, a short story was published in Colliers, a weekly American magazine featuring news, short stories, comics and more. This story, written by Richard Connell, highlights the struggle between a big game hunter by the name of Sanger Rainsford, and a Russian aristocrat by the name of General Zaroff. Rainsford is shipwrecked off of a Caribbean island, and when he arrives on shore he is greeted by the eccentric general. Zaroff tells Rainsford that he enjoys hunting the men who wash up on the shore of his island, and invites Rainsford to participate in these hunts with him. When Rainsford refuses, Zaroff announces that he will hunt Rainsford instead. Over the course of the next three days, Rainsford and Zaroff participate in a cat and mouse game of life and death.
The Most Dangerous Game is one of the most popular short stories in American history. And in the late 80s and early 90s a similar hunt was happening on the rural back roads in southern Ohio.
