The Murder In America podcast does a 50-state examination of the unfortunate phenomenon. Baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie are American institutions. This podcast might argue that murder is becoming part of that category.
Hosts Courtney Shannon and Colin Browen partner on the podcast and in life. The GenZ couple married in 2022, the year after they started this show. The native Texans began The Murder In America podcast with two notorious sets of unsolved murders in the Lone Star State. In 1991, a killer slaughtered four girls in an Austin yogurt shop, then set the place on fire. In East Texas, an oil field keeps the secrets of the Killing Fields Murders.
When Courtney and Colin started this podcast, the plan was to do two different sets of murders for each state in a single week. And then they would move on to the next state. There is no geographic plan for which state they pick next. But some murders take more than one episode to explain. Illinois' John Wayne Gacy got four episodes in Murder In America. Then fellow Illinoisan killer Drew Peterson had two episodes about him.
States like Florida have gotten more than two episodes so far. One episode discussed the bizarre crimes connected to Walt Disney World. Some have even chosen to commit suicide at the theme park. So the Murder In America podcast is not quite keeping that initial time frame.
Courtney and Colin do extensive research on famous crimes for each state. The Clutter Family Murders are in one of their Kansas episodes. Other cases, like Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes, are not quite as notorious.
Murder In America is not for family listening. Nor is it for anyone sensitive to hearing gruesome crime details. Courtney and Colin give trigger warnings before each broadcast. But true crime fans who can handle hearing about terrible murders may like this show. And fans of Colin's broadcasting may want to listen to his Paranormal Files podcast.
