Our Editor's Take

Hip-hop and comedy may have two of the largest fan bases on the internet these days. The New Rory & MAL podcast combines both these things in a way that feels funny and accessible. Mostly, the hosts chat about current events and music. And listeners can count on Rory and Mal to always stay true to their hip-hop origins.

The two hosts are well-known for their brash, insightful commentary and quick wit. They never take the stories they discuss, or themselves, too seriously. The result is a show that is funny and always a bit unpredictable.

The podcast provides an entertaining variety of subjects each week. Rory and Mal discuss the latest news headlines and gossip from celebrity culture. Stories from the world of sports, especially basketball, pop up occasionally. Although the breadth of topics on offer is wide, there's a strong focus on hip-hop and rap music. New Rory & MAL often review music albums and festivals. They also have well-known rappers such as N.O.R.E. on the show. It's a great listen for those wanting to catch up on their favorite music genre.

While the podcast's name may have the word “new” in it, these guys are not new to podcasting. Rory Farrell and Jamil “Mal” Clay got their start as cohosts of The Joe Budden Podcast, which launched in 2015. After they left the show in 2021, the two reemerged with the New Rory & MAL podcast.

Rory's and Mal's infectious sense of humor never misses the mark. And while episodes easily run over two hours, listeners can be certain it's time well spent.

If you’re not familiar with DJ Cannon he helped create the sound of the mixtape era. Currently, he is the CEO of the extremely successful Generation Now and co-founder of the TmrO app. First, Cannon takes us through his early years in the studio from bumping into Kanye and playing basketball with Kobe. Eventually Cannon met DJ Drama and that’s where the mixtapes began. Then comes the most controversial topic of today’s episode. The 23-year-old who looks like a child who’s dating a 26-year-old. Rory and Julian believe this could be a breakthrough.
