105 - What Does Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped Say About You?
It’s almost like Christmas . . . if an app you use all the time stalks you all year and then tells you what it learned! Once again, it’s time for our annual Spotify Wrapped Breakdown, and what we were listening to (and when) is a pretty interesting way of making sense of your 2023. Listen to our 2022 episode here on Apple Podcasts or here on Spotify. Alexis is quite a bit more adventurous when it comes to genres; Mary tends to know what she likes and stick with it. Mary laughs pretty hard at Lexy when she is told she listens like people from Provo, Utah . . . but is humbled rather quickly.    Mary mentions an article in which Taylor Swift is nominated as “Person of the Year.” Read the opinion piece by Peggy Noonan in the Wall Street Journal here.   And what kind of Spotify-based episode would this be if we didn’t include a playlist? Here’s a link to Wrapping Up 2023 With The Bettys, which includes a top 10 from both of us. For Lexy, it’s heartbreak and romance. And for Mary, it’s Rock. And Pop. And Pop-Rock. There’s a little bit about our podcast listening habits as well.   If you’d like to hear more from us (and an extended version of our 2023 Wrapped Playlist!) please consider joining our Patreon! We’ll keep bringing you free episodes every week in your podcast feed, but If you would like to hear/read/see more from us, and you feel inclined to support us financially, please join us here! Don’t cut crisis bangs–they won’t do you any favors. We'll talk to you again soon, and we love you more.
104 - Talking About Ted (Lasso)

104 - Talking About Ted (Lasso)
Howdy, neighbor! Now, “don’t you fret, Boba Fett”– Alexis and Mary have some stuff to work through, but we’re still good. Life is crazy, and we’re both exhausted, but we’re here. Today we're FINALLY talking about Ted Lasso! (Watch it here on Apple TV+). Well, Mary’s talking about it, because it’s one of her favorite ‘comfort shows,’ but Lexy hasn’t seen it yet, because she “sucks at TV,” and she’d rather watch a crime docu-series or Full House (stream it here on Max).   Mary first learned about Ted Lasso by listening to a podcast about her favorite comfort show, Scrubs (watch it here on Hulu; not to be confused with Grey’s Anatomy, which you can stream here on Netflix). Listen to the podcast episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends here on Apple Podcasts, or here on Spotify. By the way – the language on the show, and on this podcast is quite fruity (explicit).    Alexis talks a bit about paths, and how we don’t really know what is best for other people. You might want to go way back and listen to Episode 15 of the Bettys Podcast, about Manuals and Agendas (listen here on Spotify and here on Apple).   If you’d like to hear even more about Ted Lasso (because Mary won’t shut up about it), please consider joining our Patreon! It’s a little more raw and unfiltered, and we’ve got some good stories coming. If you feel so inclined, please join us here! We’ll be including lots of awesome bonus content, some behind-the-scenes, group coaching, extra photos, and more! Starting at just $5/month. We really appreciate your support.   Please get in touch! Send us an email at thebettyspodcast@gmail.com, and please follow us on Instagram @thebettyspodcast, on Facebook as The Bettys Podcast, on TikTok as TheBettysPodcast and on Twitter @bettys_podcast.    We want to hear from you! If this show resonates with you, please make sure to share & subscribe, and give us a rating & review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   Thank you for coming to Mary's "Ted Talk," friends. We hope you’re “in the mood for shape-based jokes,” and that your ultimate comfort show is as good as this one. We'll talk to you again soon, and we love you more.

103 - Forget Turkey Talk; Are You Ready For Hunger Games?
Well, hi. Mary’s voice is extra squeaky today, so even though it might be as painful to listen to as it was for her to speak, we hope it’s at least tolerable for you, friends. But it’s definitely worth it to hear Lexy’s insights and stories from her work as security for Lionsgate, at several Utah premieres of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (the 2023 film, based on the 2020 Novel and Hunger Games prequel by Suzanne Collins). Also, check out Lexy’s cool P.I. aunt here on Instagram.   Alexis was able to get quite familiar with the show, and watching it more than once resolved her concern about plot holes. There were a couple of themes that stood out for her: trust, and this quote from Snow: “We all do things we aren’t proud of to survive.” Lexy then talks a bit about what we do when we’re in survival mode.   She mentions this quote from Jeff Jarvis, author of What Would Google Do (2009): "The more you control, the less you will be trusted. The more you hand over control, the more trust you will earn."   If you’d like to hear more from us, please consider joining our Patreon! 102 - Love Languages, Relationships, and Balloons
Greetings, ladies and gents!! Alexis and Mary are talking about the Five Love languages, and some of their pitfalls today. We talk a lot about balloons (IYKYK), and how they are attention-seeking and temporary. Mary also references this article about the love languages. Women are pretty good at sniffing out those 'half-a**’ presents, so please put some thought and intention into your gifts!    Alexis talks a bit about Kelly Clarkson’s album “Chemistry” (listen here on Spotify or here on YouTube). And Mary hearkens back to Episode 22 of The Bettys Podcast (listen here on Spotify, or here on Apple Podcasts) when we talked about Lessons in Chemistry, the book by Bonnie Garmus, and the series on Apple TV+   If you’d like to hear more about this topic, please consider joining our Patreon! It’s a little more raw and unfiltered, and we’ve got some good stories coming. If you feel so inclined, please join us here! 101 - Looking Back & Looking Forward
Hello, friends! Happy Episode 101! We’re going to talk about armpit hair. We hope you are feeling fresh today, and clean shaven (or not . . . it’s cold outside, so you do you)!   We talk about some of the statistics for the Bettys Podcast in the past year/100 episodes, and have a little discussion about the virtues of Apple vs. Spotify vs. Amazon.   We also talk a little about our Patreon! We’ll be including lots of awesome bonus content, some behind-the-scenes, group coaching, extra photos, and more! Starting at just $5/month. 100 - Our Most Personal Episode Yet: The Bettys Top 10 Defining Moments of Our Lives
Here we are, Bettys and Jacks. We actually made it to 100! On our one-year anniversary, no less! Alexis and Mary (and our special guest Rebecca) are extra squirelly during this live recording; we hope you can follow this hilarious, intimate and heartfelt conversation. We also recorded this on video, which we are definitely not used to, so please forgive us as we talk about cameras and fight with microphones and complain about how pale Mary looks compared to Lexy. We ARE the gift. (Anyone want to be our T-Shirt designer?)   We do have some special guests and restless dogs in the background, and a shared microphone that keeps getting bumped. We hope you find all of this more entertaining than distracting!    Mary quotes from the book Get Out Of Your Own Way by Dave Hollis.    We’ve launched our Patreon! If you feel so inclined, please join us here! We’ll be including lots of awesome bonus content, including some behind-the-scenes, spicy bonus episodes, group coaching, and more! Thank you for listening today, and every other day you’ve tuned in. Let us know if you prefer Zach Morris or A.C. Slater, and if you don’t mind the messiness of a live recording. Remember that nerdiness is a little sexy. We'll talk to you again soon, and FOR THE HUNDREDTH TIME-–we love you more.

097 - Need To Laugh/Cry/Get Out of Your Head For a While? Bettys Top 10 Movies of ALL TIME
Greetings, movie lovers!! As much as Mary would like for this to be an episode about Space Movies (here’s a good list to start from!), Lexy has some major issues with them. If you like space movies, and haven’t watched Interstellar (2014), Mary highly recommends it, though it would likely give Lexy a panic attack.     So between the two of us, it’s a pretty good cross-section of our personalities. Lexy’s number 10 is Dances With Wolves (1990). Although Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) did not make the top 10, that is Mary’s favorite Kevin Costner movie. Listen to the soundtrack here. Hitch didn’t make our list either, but that movie is a GOOD TIME. Another great soundtrack is from Dirty Dancing (from 1987, Lexy’s number 8). Check out the excellent soundtrack here on Spotify.   We’ve got comedies, dramas, rom-coms, and yes–a couple of space movies. Here are a few of our faves:   Dances With Wolves (stream it here on Amazon/MGM+) So I Married An Axe Murderer (stream it here on Max) Dirty Dancing (stream it here on Amazon) Notting Hill (stream it here on Hulu) Dumb and Dumber (rent or purchase here on Amazon) The Wedding Singer (stream it here on Amazon) The Joker (stream it here on Max)   …and for our top three, you’ll have to tune in! Your comments and messages really help us know what you want to hear and how we can improve. If this show resonates with you, please make sure to share & subscribe, and give us a rating & review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   Thank you for listening, friends! Tell us what your favorite movies are, and if you’re into space movies! We'll talk to you again soon, and please remember–we love you more.

096 - Need Some Help With The Kids? Our Top 10 Mom Tips & Hacks
096 - Mom Tips Top 10 Hello, Bettys and Jacks! We hope your October/Spooky Season is not being squished into a big pile of crap! We had to get ourselves a little hyped-up to record today, but luckily we had our Bettys Podcast HYPE Playlist! Check it out here on Spotify.   Mary complains for a bit about the registration process for the lottery for tickets to the Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert in Salt Lake City. It’s frustrating, because it’s a lovely (and free!) concert every year. Check out this one from 2014 with the Muppets from Sesame Street. Alexis and Mary also talk a bit about Sesame Place and SeaWorld near San Diego, California.   We started this episode wanting to talk about movies (stay tuned for episode 97!), but ended up ad-libbing and sharing some really good Mom Tips/Hacks. We’ve got tips for newborns, teenagers, special needs, and everything in-between. If you’re struggling to communicate with younger kids, some sign language might help. We really liked Signing Time (especially the “My Day” video from Signing Time with Alex and Leah; it’s a little bit older, but extremely helpful!). Also, check out this playlist on YouTube–so much good stuff there!    We’re also big fans of the 8-Second Hug. And please check out this TEDx Talk by Collin Kartchner. That’s good stuff.   And here are some of the books we mention: Cat in the Hat, Too Tight Benny, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, and Goodnight, Moon. Your comments and messages really help us know what you want to hear and how we can improve. If this show resonates with you, please make sure to share & subscribe, and give us a rating & review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   Thank you for listening, friends! We wanna know who you sat with at lunch today, and we hope we can normalize these hard conversations. We'll talk to you again soon, and please remember–we love you more.

095 - Swiftie Sisters: Talking About TSwift, and our Top 10(ish) Taylor Swift Songs
Hey, Lovers! We hope you're "doing fine, and looking fine.” Mary and Alexis welcome our sister Rebecca as a special guest on this episode to talk about our friend T. Swizzle. We went to see the Eras Tour Concert Film recently, so she’s been top of mind lately. Also, there is a lil’ bit of swearing on this episode, so be prepared for some Vigilante Sh*t (and the like). Rebecca’s favorite album is Red, Lexy’s favorite is Folklore, and apparently Mary’s favorite is 1989 (Taylor’s Version coming soon!).   We talk a little about her new relationship with Travis Kelce, and how lots of women are now Kansas City Chiefs fans, but a lot of our talk is about how she brings different generations together.   Check out our Taylor Swift Playlist here on Spotify   ***We do not own the rights to any of the music snippets we play during this episode. Please don’t sue us, Taylor. We love you. ***   Please get in touch! Send us an email at thebettyspodcast@gmail.com, and please follow us on Instagram @thebettyspodcast, on Facebook as The Bettys Podcast, on TikTok as TheBettysPodcast and on Twitter @bettys_podcast.    We want to hear from you! Your comments and messages really help us know what you want to hear and how we can improve. If this show resonates with you, please make sure to share & subscribe, and give us a rating & review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   Thank you for listening today! We hope you don’t cut bangs while you’re in crisis, and that you’ll support women who do. Thanks for indulging us in our current eras, and we'll talk to you again soon. And remember–we love you more.   “I don’t swear. Just sometimes.” –Lexy

092 - You Need a Hype Playlist. Here’s Lexy’s Top 10 (or so . . .)
We’re hooked on a feeling, Bettys and Jacks! As Alexis and Mary lead up to our 100th episode and one-year anniversary, we are continuing to do our 10 “Top Ten Lists,” and today it is some epic HYPE songs! This episode is a little chaotic, because we got a nation-wide phone alert, dogs barking, and a BeReal notification. Hmm . . . maybe we need to minimize distractions while we’re recording!   We’ve got Rihanna, Blackstreet, Lizzo, Adam Lambert, Tina Turner, Elton John, Queen, and TSwift, to name a few. Check out The Bettys Hype Playlist on Spotify here. And here's the playlist on YouTube. You're welcome.   Our Better Betty Challenge for today is to come up with your own Hype List! Use ours as inspiration, but you know better than we do what songs make you excited, so make your own. And blast it the next time you need to get out of a funk! And share it with us. We wanna hear your favorites too! Thank you for listening today! We can’t wait to hear which songs pump you up. We’ll talk to you again soon, and remember that we love you more (. . . are you ready for it?).

091 - The Songs Are In Your Eyes: Mary’s Top 10 U2 Songs
It’s a Beautiful Day in October, Bettys and Jacks!! Alexis and Mary start off “Smoking With Jesus” (using Palo Santo), and we’re going to try and keep things light and fluffy for A Little While, leading up to our 100th episode! We’re going to do 10 “Top Ten Lists” (because 10 x 10 = 100, right? Because, Math). Mary has been Stuck In A Moment as a U2 fan for years, and has lots of opinions on them.   Mary also went to Las Vegas to see U2 at the Sphere in on opening night (read a review from Variety here). She talks about U2’s new single “Atomic City” (check out the video here), and gives her top 10 songs from the band.   Here’s a link to the New York Times article reviewing the concert at the Sphere. Here’s a link to Mary’s Top 10 U2 songs on YouTube, including some excellent live versions and fun extras. And here’s the link to Mary’s Ultimate U2 Playlist on Spotify. We hope you enjoy!   Please get in touch! We hope you learned something, and that you’ll remember that we get to carry each other. We’ll talk to you again soon, and remember that Love is All We Have Left.

090 - Betty Byte: Hidden Talents, and Hints of What’s Coming
Let’s DO IT, Bettys!! We hope you’re ready for some tween-level humor and slightly naughty random conversation today; Alexis has been playing Pokémon Go to connect with Zeke, her 12-year-old, and Mary has perfected her ability to make anything sound dirty from her time working in the O.R.. So fair warning–the word “candies” may be ruined for you from here on out.   We’re still talking about Dan in Real Life, the 2007 movie starring Steve Carell, which you can stream here on Disney+. In the movie, Dan sings a cover of “Let My Love Open The Door” by Pete Townshend. Watch this sweet scene here. And we go into a few more of our adventures in Austin.    Lexy and Mary also tease a little bit about what you’ll hear on our forthcoming Patreon. You’ll love it! (Patreon. Not Only Fans.)   Please get in touch! Thank you for being here today. Celebrate your own hidden talents, but please try to not be a “Murderer of Love.” We’ll see you on Monday, and remember that we love you more.
089 - The Stories We Tell Ourselves (Dan in Real Life)
Oct 2 2023
089 - The Stories We Tell Ourselves (Dan in Real Life)
Okay. “Do you remember the 21st of September”? We do, and it’s now on Mary and Lexy’s HYPE playlist (check it out on Spotify here!) We talk a little about how much we love the month of September, and its’ kick-into-gear vibe.   This song reminds Mary of one of her favorite movies: Dan in Real Life, the 2007 movie starring Steve Carrell, Juliette Binoche, and Dane Cook (stream it here on Disney+). Check out the hilarious scene here, where Dan is trying to not show his attraction to his brother’s girlfriend.   Mary talks about some of her car woes, including the most pathetic call to AAA. She tells herself the story that she’s “car-stupid,” and in the movie, Dan tells himself that his needs are less important than anyone else’s in the family. Sometimes things get awkward, and we don’t know how to navigate some of life’s situations. That can often lead to feelings of shame and rejection.   Here are some questions that might help you figure out if the stories that we’re telling ourselves are true:   Is it actually true? Would it be provable in court? What evidence would there be?Are you projecting your thoughts onto others?Who am I as a result of this story? How am I showing up?If I change this thought/story, how would it make me feel?Prepare to be surprised.  Please get in touch! Send us an email at thebettyspodcast@gmail.com, and please follow us on Instagram @thebettyspodcast, on Facebook as The Bettys Podcast, and on TikTok as TheBettysPodcast.   We want to hear from you! Your comments and messages really help us know what you want to hear and how we can improve. If this show resonates with you, please make sure to share & subscribe, and give us a rating & review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.   “Don’t be held back with what should be. Just see what it is.” Mama Ximena’s tip-of-the-day is a great reminder to consider our thoughts and how they make us feel. Our hope is that we can help you in some way.  And we’d love to meet you! If you’re available to join us at the Taylor Swift Eras Tour Concert Film at the Cinemark in West Valley City, Utah (5412 High Market Drive), at 11:00am on Saturday October 14, 2023. Get your tickets here, and we’ll see you there! You are truly incredible, and we love you more.
087 - Are You Fitting In or Belonging?
Sep 25 2023
087 - Are You Fitting In or Belonging?
Good day, Bettys and Jacks! You may think you know us, because we updated our pictures recently, but . . . actually Lexy’s hair is almost black now, and Mary’s hair is quite blonde. And we both want to go red for Fall. And next summer we’ll wanna go blonde again. Just when you think you know us! “It’s a circle!”    Everything comes down to belonging. Younger kids have a confidence that we admire as adults, which comes from naturally belonging to themselves. As we grow up, shame clouds our resilience and causes us to lose our footing when it comes to belonging to ourselves. It makes us want to “fit in,” which is the opposite of belonging according to Brené Brown.   We believe that belonging to yourself means to accept all of the parts–good and bad, beautiful and ugly–that make up you. They all belong to you, and that’s okay. Maya Angelou said: “You only are free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.” And when you don’t belong to yourself, you’re gonna look for ways to escape your life. Thank you for listening, friends. Growth is where the joy comes. We’re so grateful for you, and we love you more.
