But headed by a handsome and charismatic leader named Joe Hunt, the members of the self-proclaimed “Billionaire Boys Club” get sucked deeper into twisted schemes of kidnapping, torture, and revenge. The boys must stick together, or risk prison - or worse.

Our Editor's Take

Imagine being born into wealth and getting the best education and opportunities money can buy. That still was not enough for Joe Hunt. So, he embarked on a scheme to fleece as much money as he could from unsuspecting millionaires whose hunger to get even richer exceeded their critical thinking skills. Dressed in designer suits and driving matching BMWs, Hunt and his accomplices ran a Ponzi scheme without initially raising too much suspicion.

Billionaire Boys Club follows Hunt and his visions of power and prestige. As a failed commodities trader in Chicago in 1981, he relied on pure bravado to form an "investment club" in Beverly Hills. Listeners soon start to see what a little motivation and an overwhelming sense of entitlement can do to certain young, ambitious men. Billionaire Boys Club deals with the victims of get-rich-quick schemes—inevitably leaving listeners with a nuanced feeling towards this particular group of heirs to generational wealth.

These boys have been the subjects of numerous books, a TV miniseries, and a 2018 movie directed by James Cox starring Kevin Spacey. In this podcast, Hollywood & Crime host Tracy Pattin and actor Timothy Olyphant go even further to uncover the true story of the Billionaire Boys Club. This seven-episode podcast from Wondery spreads the story over five gripping hours from the small, ambitious beginnings to the ultimate downfall of the group.
