Our Editor's Take

Mommy Doomsday is a true crime podcast. Religious extremism is intriguing, especially when it drives people to do unspeakable things. Such gruesome circumstances put little towns like Rexburg, Idaho, on the map. Dateline NBC's Keith Morrison hosts this podcast. He tells the story of Lori Vallow. After a point in her life, Vallow's existence became fraught with violence and mystery.

Chad Daybell was Vallow's fifth husband. Neither was single when they met. A chain of strange and awful events ensued after the union. Vallow's marriage to Daybell is the first of many surprising events. It is from this point that the Mommy Doomsday podcast story gets shocking.

The victims are Daybell's ex-wife Tammy and Vallow's two younger children. Tylee Ryan was 17 years old, and JJ Vallow was 7. The unresolved tale is a disturbing but compelling one. A televised miniseries called Sins of Our Mother investigates the same case. The story involves violence toward children. Though it is interesting, seeing the faces of the children can be upsetting. Some may find it easier to listen to this Dateline NBC podcast than to watch the miniseries.

As the horrific tale comes to an end in reality, it feels like the right time to listen to Mommy Doomsday. Those new to the story will want to know what's going on. Those already familiar may want to reacquaint themselves with the details. The podcast tells the story in six episodes. It also has an update episode featuring Morrison and Shane Bishop, the show's producer. They tell listeners the most recent news in the true crime saga.
