The nature of the mind is that whenever a thought or feeling arises you can become involved with it believe it and think it is your reality. However, thoughts can also be seen as passing waves of perception. Then you are the master who can decide which thoughts to dwell on which ones are useful and which ones you can let go of because they will only cause mental worry, free, or pain and suffering.
To remain unaffected and uninvolved you need to know that you are the Knower of all of your thoughts and feelings. Then you can shift your attention away from the disturbing thought that is not helpful to the Knower that is forever free from the mind and your thinking.
