Things I Wish My Patients Knew - ADPT Physio

Phil White

A podcast by Phil White from ADPT Physio based in Sydney, Australia. My goal as a physio is to provide the best value healthcare possible. Understandably, patients usually place high value on physiotherapists doing something to them in the form of hands on treatments. Hands on treatments are useful. But, usually, what has the best long-term results for injury rehab, prevention and performance is teaching patients how they can manage themselves and prepare their body for what they want to do. " I have now moved on from my physical location in North Sydney to focus entirely on online coaching & programming + online physio. Injuries are opportunities - Episode 7
Human brains love progression. When you get an injury it can make you feel like you are going backwards. Putting the breaks on the downward spiral is key for staying engaged in your rehab journey and developing new strengths. Embrace the beginner mindset and learn to love the quick wins that come with being a beginner in something. Injuries also highlight areas of your preparation and performance that may be lacking. Using that lesson as an opportunity to develop that weak point will make you stronger than ever before. Choose your own adventure physio! Goal setting and the SAID principle - Episode 4
I believe that every initial consultation needs to start with your goals. Knowing what you want to get out of the session and what activities you'd like to get back to will guide us in the right direction from the start. Some people will want the kitchen sink thrown at their injury, with no stone left unturned to get back to the sport or activity they love. Others may want to just know that they won't make their knee injury worse by taking their dog for a walk every morning. Both of these scenarios are appropriate for a physio to manage. Unfortunately, so often, people who train and compete hard are under serviced because the physio has limited experience working with athletes. While the dog walker will be over serviced due to not having had a conversation about goals (or so the physio can meet KPIs). Now don't get me wrong - If the dog walker would like the kitchen sink thrown at their knee  or the athlete just wants to know their injury won't cause issues in the future - this is also completely appropriate, just so long as it is a informed choice made with the patient. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I want to make this as valuable to my listeners as possible so please request any topics you would like to know about. What does a physio do? My treatment hierarchy of needs - Episode 3
The treatment hierarchy of needs is the framework I developed to help guide me and my patients through the decision of how many sessions they choose to book and what we do in those sessions. I imagine it will be an evolving framework but this is where it currently stands. I would love to hear your feedback on the treatment hierarchy and if there is anything you would add or subtract. Should I see a doctor of physio first? Screening for Red Flags - Episode 2

Should I see a doctor of physio first? Screening for Red Flags - Episode 2
Red flag screening questions In today's episode, I talk about the signs and symptoms that physios will ask to help guide our diagnosis and decide whether you should be seeing a doctor instead/additionally. An affirmative answer to these "red flag" questions does not necessarily mean you have a medical condition but it raises the index of suspicion that the symptoms may not be musculoskeletal in nature. So please, do not panic if one or some of these symptoms apply to you but it may be worth seeing your GP ort to go to the emergency department if the certain symptoms are present. For the blog post with a list of symptoms, click here - https://adpt.physio/blog/should-i-see-a-doctor-or-physio-first/ For a transcript, head to - https://adpt.physio/blog/should-i-see-a-doctor-of-physio-first-screening-for-red-flags-episode-2/ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I want to make this as valuable to my listeners as possible so please request any topics you would like to know about. I want to make my physio appointments valuable for you - Episode 1
Physiotherapy isn't a treatment, it's a profession. Each physio, despite having the same qualification, will have different experiences and influences that will guide how a course of treatment will go. We are evidence based practitioners, but, there is so much variability between people and their circumstances that there is rarely, if ever, a perfect study that says exactly what is the best course of action for an individual.  It is something I have found challenging since changing from being a massage therapist, where my treatment choice was clear, to qualifying as a physiotherapist. The north star of my business decisions is about making my sessions as valuable to my patients as possible. Figuring out how to do that has been challenging (and I haven't always got it right) but I am always trying. I would love to hear what you find most valuable when seeing a physio.
