Our Editor's Take

The Brülosophy Podcast is an informative show for brewers and beer lovers alike. The rotating cohosts are all passionate and dedicated when it comes to beer making. They offer listeners tips on how to improve the home brewing process. That includes anything from brewing methods and packaging to recipe creation and naming the beverage. This advice is not something the audience is likely to find anywhere else. The hosts enjoy challenging the traditional ways of production with their "exBEERiments." They test out ways to make beer with less time, less effort, and different ingredients.

The primary host of The Brülosophy Podcast is Marshall Schott. He began making beer at home in 2003. He was living in Bellingham, WA, which only had one brewery at the time. Marshall, having turned 21 then, wanted to try more of the beverage. When a coworker shared his pastime of making his own beer, Marshall also decided to attempt it. By the time Marshall moved to California several years later, he had become obsessed. He was making four to six five-gallon batches every month. One of his first experiments was because Marshall got tired of the yeast rinsing process. To make it easier, he decided to try overbuilding starters for harvesting. Marshall shared the successful attempt in a forum along with his ideas that followed. Finally, in 2014, he gathered all his experimentations under one blog. In 2018, that successful blog became a podcast.

In The Brülosophy Podcast, Marshall and other contributors recreate the exBEERiments. They test things like whether fermentation vessels matter and the impact of mash pH. In other episodes, called "exBEERience," they talk about topics like the quick sour method and building a garage walk-in cooler. There are entire installments dedicated to questions from listeners as well. The group also enjoys discussing the different varieties of beer and their history. This is a full-rounded podcast with both theoretical and practical information.
