In this week's episode, Dr. Kelly hands off to Anthony Palatta, DDS!  Anthony Palatta is a healthcare education consultant and coach who aims to strengthen compassion in healthcare by guiding educators and learners towards the cultivation and implementation of a person-centered approach to delivering care. He specializes in helping leaders in health professions education identify key drivers in the system that are creating barriers to effectively achieving “Institutional Wellbeing” Recently, Dr. Palatta completed his certificate coursework in restorative justice at the University of San Diego and is applying his expertise to introduce community building circles into health education as an authentic tool to further develop in students, staff & faculty, their empathy, accountability, compassion, teamwork, and most important, self-compassion. Prior to his current work, Dr. Anthony Palatta was the Chief Learning Officer at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) in Washington, DC. where he led the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) and well as all professional development programing and national meetings. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Palatta was the dean for Student Affairs, Admissions and Financial Aid at New York University, College of Dentistry (NYUCD). He received his DDS from NYUCD after which he practiced clinical dentistry both in private practice and in a community hospital setting focused on the health needs of the LGBTQIA community. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Palatta also held a faculty position in clinical oral medicine and pathology, led the student judicial office, and developed cultural awareness and unconscious bias programming for dental students. Dr. Palatta is certified in organizational development and change management from Georgetown University, restorative justice, and life coaching, as well as the use of assessment tools for emotional intelligence and intercultural development. In this week's episode, Dr. Kelly Tanner makes the dental handoff to Misty Mesimer! Mrs. Mesimer’s educational journey began with an Associate of Applied Science Degree from Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Virginia in 1997. She later earned a Bachelor of Health Science with a minor in Human Services Counseling and a Master of Science in Community Health from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She earned her bachelor's degree in 2000 and her master’s degree in 2007. Misty is currently a PhD candidate in the Community College Leadership Program at Old Dominion University. Mrs. Mesimer has been a member of the Germanna Community College faculty since 1999. Her current roles include Program Director for Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene. Misty has been an active member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association since 1994. She has served her colleagues as VDHA Legislative Chair and President. Mrs. Mesimer is a member of the Virginia Allied Dental Program Director’s Consortium and the American Dental Educators’ Association. Mrs. Mesimer was appointed to the Virginia Board of Dentistry in July 2004 by Governor Mark Warner and served two consecutive terms. In June 2018, Ms. Mesimer became a site visitor for the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. In 2020-2021, she served as the chair for the ADEA Dental Assisting Section. In 2021 – 2022, she served as a member of the ADEA Workgroup revising Entry-Level Competencies for Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene, and Dental Lab Technologists. She is currently chair of the ADEA Special Interest Group for Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinators. Misty has been honored by her colleagues in receiving various awards since 2000. These include the VDHA Outstanding Member Award and the Patricia A. Golliday Award of Dedication. In 2002, Misty received the Advocate of the Year Award from the ARC of the Rappahannock for her significant contributions to the welfare of people with mental retardation. She has been recognized multiple times for her leadership, management, and community service at Germanna Community College. Mrs. Mesimer is a member of the Patawomack Indian Tribe and a Stafford native where she resides with her husband and two daughters. Dr. Megan Reutter, RDH, DHSc is a dental hygienist and has worked in a variety of settings, including clinical practice, education, and public health. She received her undergraduate degree at Eastern Illinois University in Community Health, her master’s degree from University of Bridgeport in Dental Hygiene Education, and her doctorate degree at A.T. Still University. Her doctorate degree is in Health Sciences with a concentration in Leadership and Organizational Behavior. Dr. Reutter’s research interests include interprofessional collaboration, the oral-systemic link, and leadership. She has presented her research and leadership courses for healthcare professionals. Dr. Reutter assisted the National Network of Healthcare Hygienists (NNHH) with curriculum development for dental hygienists to specialize in oncology and serve as a member of the multidisciplinary team. Megan also serves as a board member for NNHH and the Illinois IFLOSS Coalition. She is passionate about medical-dental integration and serving as an oral health advocate. Dr. Reutter holds a joint appointment at Campbell University in the Doctor of Health Sciences program and at University of Illinois in the Health Sciences program. Dr. Kelly and Dr. Reutter have a wide-ranging conversation spanning through her various areas of expertise and driving home the importance of the cross-section between medicine and dentistry. In this week's Dental Handoff, Dr. Kelly Tanner welcomes in Dr. Mark Latta! Mark A. Latta, DMD, M.S., is Dean Emeritus and Professor of General Dentistry at the Creighton University School of Dentistry. He served as dean of the School from 2011 to 2021. He continues to contribute as an individual teacher/scholar with his own research and teaching and by collaborating internationally in research and teaching. Prior to being appointed dean, he served as the associate dean for research at Creighton from 1995-2011. He is a graduate of Lafayette College, Easton PA (BA Chemistry), University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Philadelphia PA (DMD), York Hospital York, PA (General Practice Residency) and University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Baltimore MD (MS, Oral Biology). Following 4 years in private dental practice Dr. Latta joined the Laboratory Products Division of Dentsply International-now Dentsply/Sirona. He served numerous roles in Research and Development for the company ultimately serving as the Director of R&D. During his industrial career, he contributed to or was responsible for more than 20 new dental product introductions. He has been awarded more than 120 research grants investigating prosthetic materials, dental restorative materials, dental adhesives and cements. He has led numerous clinical trials of dental materials. He is a speaker and lecturer of international renown and has published more than 130 manuscripts and 200 abstracts and has presented at numerous state, national and international dental association meetings throughout the world. Dr. Latta, is a fellow in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, and a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national honorary dental society. He was awarded Faculty of Dentistry status in the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in. 2022. He has also served as president of the Dental Materials Group of the International Association for Dental Research. Anne received her preceptor for the Bale/Doneen method and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. In 2020 Anne became certified as a Longevity Specialist with the Alzheimer’s Research and Dementia Foundation, has presented, and helped with their curriculum. She is a Fellow with The American Academy of Oral Systemic Health and in 2021 published her manuscript Alzheimer’s Disease and Oral-Systemic Health: Bidirectional Care Integration Improving Outcomes. Anne has consulted with Weill Cornell Medical Center’s Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, Florida Atlantic College Center for Brain Health and currently at the Atria Institute, New York. She is included in an International Consortium that is a diverse network of brain researchers, clinicians and institutions who support Alzheimer’s prevention. As a private practice dentist, Nanette has also been involved in dental education at many levels. After graduating in 1988, Nan remained at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry as a clinical instructor in the Department of Prosthodontics for five years, while also in her general private practice. Involvement in organized dentistry led to a pathway of volunteerism in planning and executing continuing education for the Toledo Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association Committee on Annual Sessions, and the American Dental Association Committee of Annual Meetings. Nan has served as general chair for Ohio Dental Association Annual Session, American Dental Association Annual Meeting, and is currently serving as the Chair of Learning Experience, ADA SmileCon, Orlando 2023. Dr. Terlet shares insights from her decades of experience in dentistry, as well as what she has learned from hitting the speaking circuit and how she was able to overcome stage fright.
