The Story of Curtis Brooks  Curtis Brooks has been on the A&E Program: #kidsbehindbars    He was incarcerated at age 15.   On April 10, 1995 in Aurora, Colorado, 15-year-old Curtis Brooks was one of four teenagers involved in the death of Christopher Ramos as they tried to steal his car. As a result, Curtis was sentenced to life in prison without parole.   After 23 years in jail, Curtis was granted a resentencing. He spent a total of 24 years behind bars. This happened because the US Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to hand out such lengthy sentences to juveniles convicted of murder.  Curtis did not fire the shot that took the life of the boy.   There are all kinds of nuances associated with his case, readily available on the Internet.  The subject of this interview is to show what Curtis' life is like after Prison.   Curtis Brooks has done well for himself. Since being released on July 1, 2019, he lives in New York State's Capital District, is now married, has bought his first house, and is now in Sales.   This is his story, as told by Curtis himself.  This has an emphasis on what he considers to be his mission in life. I think you'll find it heartwarming. Natasha Pernicka is the Executive Director at The Food Pantries for the Capital District, Inc. in Albany, NY. Her passion is evident. The power of working together in coalition, The Food Pantries for the Capital District strives to fill the gaps to make sure pantry shelves are full and people in need have nutritious food on the table. Note this is New York State related: Imagine trying to feed yourself on $4.50 a day. Without cheating. For most of us, that’s coffee and a treat. If you’re dependent on the monthly SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, formerly known as food stamps, that $4.50 average daily allotment tends to run out by the third week. Take the “SNAP challenge” to experience why people living in a chronic food emergency often opt for cheap calories rather than healthful food. But for many, the emergency doesn’t end. 43,500 people visit Capital District food pantries annually. However, according to Feeding America, more than 80,000 people—including 23,000 babies and children—in our region are food insecure, which means they lack access or resources to provide healthy food on a consistent basis. All I wanted to do was to be on TV. I started acting, public speaking, and hosting events at a very young age. I was often called on to read in church or serve as the mistress of ceremonies. I loved it. I loved every bit of it. I continued public speaking throughout my school years.  I was very active in leadership roles in many school clubs and community groups. Keeping in line with my desire to be on the big stage, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism.  Then I quickly realized the moolah just wasn’t enough. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be the “star of the show”. I wanted to present, facilitate, please my parents, friends, family, and everyone else. Then, I got older. I faced one too many rejections. Life happened. And one day, I realized I had lost my confidence. I almost couldn’t recognize myself. I became fearful and doubtful even in my natural abilities. Through a process of self-awareness, introspection, empowerment outlets, coaching, and a support system, I slowly gained my confidence back. And I am determined not to go down that path again. When I decided to impress and love myself first, the zone of genius began to unleash.
