Marcus Aurelius' Meditations for Modern Life

Marcus Aurelius' Meditations for Modern Life

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. While the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers throughout the centuries.  Whilst many of his reflections and ways to live life were based on the teachings of earlier philosophers from the Socratics to the early Stoics, Marcus Aurelius strove to live his life by the principles of his philosophy and in his Meditations articulated those views in a way that remains one of the greatest books of wisdom to have graced the Earth. Trauma - This one goes deep! I really hope this helps others as I share some personal experiences that led to me to philosophy and a desire to understand the mind in the first place.  We forget how trauma is the result not of an event itself but our perception to it.  Whilst that is something we can change it is not always easy! But understanding how the mind cycles thoughts, the triggers for those thoughts and how our perceptions can change is implementation of philosophy and implementation of philosophy itself is the key to overcoming trauma! Here is the full interview with Jamie Keeling referred to in this episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/omn-e072-i-shouldnt-have-survived-adam-bates/id1338959065?i=1000467013991 The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. 45: The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius: Book 4 - Passage 6
Would you live your life differently if we could count down the years and days until we depart life in much the same way as you can count the years and days from when your life began? Are you currently having disputes with loved ones, family or friends?  Perhaps you feel you have been wronged, but do you react to that with the same virtue and character you would without any anger or resentment for what another has done to you?  We will not be alive forever and is it not important to make the most of the time that we have and to know that when we do depart we have done all we could to display ourselves as just and with virtue be it for our own souls peace or to lead by example to those who may have wronged you? The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. Praise - Praise of course is great, it helps to reinforce that we are doing things well! But, what happens if we become too accustomed to praise?  It may start to have a negative impact, not only because the elation will only be temporary, but like a high can then bring a greater down due to the flip in the emotional state, thus praise itself can become addictive.  What's more, constant praise to any of us, even if you perceive yourself as being humble, can negatively impact how we interact with others and our own objective thoughts and decisions. Resentment - Do you harbour negative thoughts to someone that has wronged you?  Those thoughts will affect all your actions and decisions in the future and will hold you back, allowing them to see you continue to suffer! Resentment will stop us making objective decisions and will also fester resulting in detriment to our physical health. Yet, why should you ever hold resentment?  It may sound like a strange questions until you listen to this episode! Your source to overcome those feelings of hurt that may be holding you back! The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. 38: The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius: Book 3 - Passage 16
The final passage of book 3! I could not believe what I read when I opened the book to read this passage! If you have seen the Republic for Modern Life videos and thus know the details of events in my own life you will have a great context for the amazing ability the universe is showing myself right now to align things.  Those videos are on the same youtube channel as the link below, which is to a more recent video which I uploaded the day prior to recording this podcast, a video discussing why the Chief Crime Commissioner and Deputy Mayor of West Yorkshire, is using the Police Force as part of the agenda outlined in the Republic for Modern Life.  Of course the content of that video, if in the right hands will lead to justice for myself and many others resulting in her imprisonment.  It therefore is not a coincidence that she has used the police force once more in an attempt to stop me doing what is right. The same evening, after the video was uploaded, at 11:15pm, the police rang by buzzer and I manage to avoid letting them in as you will hear in this episode.  But it is because of this content that they will now stop at nothing to make sure I am silenced and their lies and corruption stay hidden in Yorkshire and thus attempting to save themselves and their police chief, Alison Lowe, from imprisonment.  It really is incredible for the timing to be such that this passage is read the following day at this time! Here is the referenced video which was uploaded the day prior to this episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBTs1xirZaY&t=291s The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. 37: The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius: Book 3 - Passage 15
A passage that leads to why the thief or one who causes harm without receiving justice will suffer in the long run.  What we have always known as karma, is not just a random thing, we now have science that can explain how that lack of justice for a unjust act will manifest and harm the perpetrator who does not receive justice and Marcus knew this to be so over 1500 years ago!
