Visionaries of the OBX with Clark Twiddy
The chain of barrier islands that skirts the coast of North Carolina from the Virginia border to Cape Lookout was once remote. Today the Outer Banks is one of America’s most popular vacation destinations; welcoming millions of visitors each year! We had the opportunity to sit down with author and Outer Banks native Clark Twiddy. He chronicles the region's journey from isolation to popularity through the stories of innovators and risktakers.Clark Twiddy grew up in Duck, NC and has watched much of the transformation he discusses in his new book "Outer Banks Visionaries: Building North Carolina’s Oceanfront." He was in the U.S. Navy and is an alumnus of Virginia Military Institute, the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. He is now the president of Twiddy and Company, a hospitality and asset management firm that was founded in 1978 along the OBX. He has also served in many public, private and nonprofit roles. More info: https://www.twiddy.com/blog/outer-banks-visionaries/?gclid=CjwKCAjwgsqoBhBNEiwAwe5w00_jwbCKzj4iN9MnyKl9Q58vsQvXVnKkhlWeFm_AceYunQaUPIuUihoCuSEQAvD_BwETwiddy Rentals: https://www.twiddy.com/"Outer Banks Visionaires: Building North Carolina’s Oceanfront": https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/products/9781467153911Stay Connected:Subscribe to our newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/e3cef217a5e7/sweetnewsText a friend with a link to the show https://pod.link/1442852139Support this Show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/272163da-d825-415c-8092-bd907aba8ebd/donationsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/steel-magnolias-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Dockery Farms
May 16 2023
Dockery Farms
Dockery Farms was established by Will Dockery in 1895 to produce cotton, America’s most important export of the 19th and early 20th century. African Americans who came to Dockery to cultivate cotton created a culture that inspired the music we know as the Blues. In the words of B.B. King “You might say it all started right here.” We took a trip to see the farm for ourselves on the Mississippi Blues Trail so meet as at the table for more adventures from the Delta….   If you follow this show closely you know that at the end of March we visited Mississippi for the 2nd time since having this podcast… that’s the only 2 times we’ve ever been and there is SO much to learn about the history and culture there that we have divided up episodes from our recent trip to share with you. Today is the final episode from our Delta travels and we are excited to talk about Dockery Farms, located in Cleveland, MS… in the northern part of the state… 2 hours north of Jackson, MS… 2 hours south of Memphis, TN   We got to speak with William Lester, executive director of the Dockery Farm Foundation - he’s a historian, taught at Delta State for 38 years and he’s also an artist. Southerners Hosting Tea (For the Coronation of King Charles III)

Southerners Hosting Tea (For the Coronation of King Charles III)
Charles Philip Arthur George also known as Charles III is King of the United Kingdom and the 14 other commonwealth realms. On May 6, 2023, The Archbishop of Canterbury will lead the coronation for King Charles. We recently sat down for tea with our friend and former guest, Laura Stockett Roberts, to discuss ways us southerners can celebrate and the origins of taking tea. Laura is a native of Mississippi and lives here in Nashville with her husband and sons. She creates fantastic videos that show us exactly how to handle the old things, how to care for them, use them, and just love on them. She writes, entertains, and is just a lovely southerner. Grab your cup and meet me at the table.   Whether you intend to watch the King’s coronation or not, it’s incredibly hospitable and just fun  to have a friend over for tea.  Let Laura Stockett Roberts inspire you to set your table and invite a friend over!   Spotify’s Coronation Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1lCJ7YSSgojZwz79h8bXer   Connect with Laura Stockett Roberts:  Laura’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/laurastockettroberts/Laura’s YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP9a-cxAq-s Huge Thanks to Today's Sponsor: Sleep better at night with Boll and Branch sheets. Visit Cleveland, Mississippi
A destination in its own right with its vibrant, downtown shops and restaurants must see attractions and great hotels. The charming Delta town of Cleveland, Mississippi is just over 100 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. A city of 12,000 named after President Grover Cleveland, the town began formation in 1869 as people moved inland from the Mississippi River. Join us as we explore the adventures we had in Cleveland, Mississippi. We stayed at The Cotton House - Located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Cotton House sits in historic Cleveland, just down the road from the Mississippi Blues Trail, at the doorstep of The GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi. Located in the lobby, James Beard Award nominated Chef Cole Ellis brings Delta Meat Market to the Cotton House Hotel: both a premium grocer of specialty meat, cheese and artisan goods; and a casual, full-service restaurant serving internationally influenced dishes deeply rooted in the Southern culinary traditions of the Mississippi Delta.   Previous Episodes mentioned:  Mississippi Delta Episode - https://bit.ly/3nUTgIhDelta Tamales - https://bit.ly/43iOEvUThe Delta Blues - https://bit.ly/3KsGd8M   Places of interest mentioned:  Cotton House - https://www.cottonhousecleveland.com/Zoe Coffee Co. - https://www.zoecoffeeco.com/Airport Grocery - https://www.airportgrocerycleveland.com/The GRAMMY Museum - https://www.grammymuseumms.org/Jackson Day Trip to Eudora Welty’s house and garden - https://welty.mdah.ms.gov/Spotify Playlist “Driving the Natchez Trace” - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2JAvK3dCuQAj33gUJ5qJc6    Would you share and/or support this show? Lighten Up Sunday Dinner in the South
Mar 28 2023
Lighten Up Sunday Dinner in the South
Sunday Dinner in the South was once a staple that would never have been missed no matter what demands were on the family.  These days the schedules are tighter and the food requests are lighter. Today we’re taking a look at what makes this tradition important and sit down with Lauren McDuffie, a Charleston, SC-based cookbook author, food writer, stylist and photographer for some ideas on how we can lighten up Sunday Dinner in the South.   We got to catch up with Lauren McDuffie creator of the popular recipe website, My Kitchen Little. She also created the culinary memoir blog, Harvest and Honey, She authored the "Appalachian-ish" cookbook, Smoke, Roots, Mountain, Harvest (May 2019) and, her new cookbook is called “Southern Lights: Easier, Lighter, and Better-for-You Recipes From the South”  She brought a great perspective on how to lighten up Sundays.   Additional Resources: Sunday Supper Movement - https://sundaysuppermovement.com“Sunday Dinner in the South” Tammy Algood - https://amzn.to/3LA9DDWSeason 1 Ep 16 was the original episode we released called "Sunday Dinner in the South" - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/steel-magnolias-podcast/id1442852139?i=1000431127998 Would you share and/or support this show?
