Our Editor's Take

Brothers in Crime is a true crime podcast hosted by two brothers. Bob and Will are both true crime aficionados whose goal is to bring justice to the victims.

For every episode of the podcast, the brothers choose a case to discuss. They like to go over well-known cases, sometimes going against popular theories. In one segment, they revisit the notorious case of Lizzie Borden. According to the famous nursery rhyme, Lizzie killed her father and stepmother with an axe. In reality, she stood trial and received an acquittal for those alleged crimes. Will and Bob investigate the other possible suspects in the case. They also question whether Lizzie was guilty.

In another podcast episode, the cohosts examine the murder of Tupac Shakur. The killer's identity remains a mystery. To complicate matters, Tupac had participated in feuds from his time in gangs and in prison.

Some criminal acts deserve more than one episode. Brothers in Crime devotes five of them to the Colonial Parkway murders. The dark stretch of road known as Colonial Parkway was a popular lovers' lane. Over three years, four couples lost their lives while they parked.

Bob and Will devote a segment to each couple, discussing each case's particulars. Then, in the fifth installment, they synthesize their findings. They determine whether one person committed all eight murders. Another mini-series focuses on JonBenét Ramsey. Her case gripped the nation for years and remains unsolved.

Will and Bob will sometimes explore other brutal crimes. A couple kept their adopted son locked in a box in their garage. Heather Tallchief stole millions from a Las Vegas casino in a heist. Brothers Clarence and John Anglin escaped from Alcatraz.

Listeners might find the Brothers in Crime podcast a fascinating introduction to the true crime genre. The hosts have a preference for major cases, many of which will be familiar to the audience. The banter between the two is light and keeps the story moving along.

E71 The Menendez Family
Today we’re talking about Erik and Lyle–two infamous brothers who murdered their parents. The Menendez brothers aren’t just any other brothers in crime. We’ve waited a bit to talk about this one, and with the new Netflix show out today, we thought it was as a good a time as any. These two also have a habeas petition currently pending, and are hoping to see their life without the possibility of parole sentences shortened–one way or another.  We had some recording issues with this episode, and we apologize for the audio quality that isn’t up to our typical standard. A few episodes ago we told you about the wrongful conviction of Marvin Grimm, Jr. (E62). Shortly after that episode dropped, a nice lady reached out to us about the little boy, “CH,” who was the victim in that case.   That lady is Sarah –and she is “CH’s” sister.  Now that her brother, Christopher’s, case has recently been turned upside down by the Court's decision to vacate Grimm's conviction, her family is understandably looking for answers.  Join us as we take another look at this case – not from Marvin Grimm’s perspective, but backing up and just talking about what we know about the whole case. Today’s episode is about Christopher Harper and finding out what happened to him in Richmond, Virginia nearly 50 years ago. Wichita, Kansas. The year is 2000. It’s December, cold, and snowy. A baseball coach, symphony librarian, and group of wholesome young friends with bright futures would have their lives and legacies forever altered by two brothers from Dodge City. If you’re listening to this podcast, then you probably know people in prison for hurting children make up the lowest rung of the prison status hierarchy. In this case, Marvin Grimm went to prison for nearly half a century as a convicted child murderer and sex offender. He confessed to his crimes.  But, in June 2024, the Virginia Court of Appeals issued a writ of actual innocence in his case. What?! Why did the court do that? What did Marvin confess to doing fifty years ago? What happened to the victim in this case? We discuss all of that and plenty more in this episode. E59 Human Trafficking

E59 Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is defined by the U.S. State Department “as a crime whereby traffickers exploit and profit at the expense of adults or children by compelling them to perform labor or engage in commercial sex.  When a person younger than 18 is used to perform a commercial sex act, it is a crime regardless of whether there is any force, fraud, or coercion involved.” We call it slavery.  In this episode we talk about a federal prosecution of a North Carolina man who was convicted of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion and of a minor;  sex trafficking by force fraud and coercion; sex trafficking of a minor; using the internet to promote a prostitution business enterprise (ITAR); and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. This case is horrible. Human trafficking is horrible. We must do everything we can to #EndHumanTrafficking.  You can call the National Human Trafficking Hotline for help 24/7 at 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733.
