And so I really ultimately had to step in and make a courageous choice that many people I knew would not understand. But when I see my Maker at the end of my life, I don't want to say, Lord, I couldn't do it because I was afraid of what so and so would think of me or I was afraid of maybe losing some friends. I did it because I'm living my life to please God and wherever he leads me, no matter what that is." Being called to move on isn't easy in our humanness, but we always must ask ourselves: Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?Or am I trying to please people?If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10   While both anticipate some backlash to this conversation from some in her previous business, we know that any time we choose God over pleasing people backlash is normal and God redeems it all. I don't know about you, but about this time each year, some of my clients (and me), experience a drop in resilience. What if? It's an age-old question we ask ourselves, and normally we land on the "scary" kind of answer. Do you ever find yourself spiraling in "what if"?   In my client coaching sessions lately, we've been digging into the "what if" questions they have. What if this client doesn't come through? Or those people don't sign up for my event? Or God's given me this service offering, but no one buys it. Or this plan doesn't come together?  Or if I have to let this person go, then what will happen?  So many what ifs! In these conversations, I asked my clients to consider reframing the question through God's eyes: What if what you're walking through right now is training ground?  What if this experience is where the best teaching content is generated?  What if what you're experiencing right now is meant for you to use in the future to allow your hindsight to be someone's foresight? What if those people saying no are not your people, or it's just not the time to work with them? On this episode, I invite you to join me to reframe the question from a Biblical perspective. So often as we move through our business day in and day out, we overlook how the ups and downs develop us. The trials and triumphs play a key role in how God stretches and prunes us so we develop the fruit we're meant to yield.   Every year in Maryland where I live, I see the landscapers in our townhome community prune the branches of the crepe myrtle trees, leaving them looking barren.  Yet, I am always in awe of how the Lord springs them back to life, and they grow even more full and colorful because of that pruning.   This is exactly how God prunes us when He activates His promise to develop us into who he made us to be. And that's what we're talking about on today's episode as we explore the 4th key of our 4 keys framework: Develop. Have you ever found yourself in an identity crisis when life or business changes (as they're prone to do), and it leaves you wondering who you are? Sometimes we're holding so tight to our control that we can't see that God is waiting for us to release it to show us what's next. "If at first you don't succeed, try try again." You've heard this quote, and maybe even said it to others. But how often is your trying done from a place of self-reliance vs. trusting Jesus (or even asking Him for help)? I've begun rewatching The Chosen this week, except this time my husband Brian is joining me! Join in raising a hallelujah for that! While we watched S1, E4, I was in awe watching Jesus instruct Simon and Andrew to let down their nets even after a long night (well, weeks really) of catching nothing. Desperate to pay their tax debt, and somehow be redeemed from Simon's "deal" with the Romans, Simon kept trying, and trying, and trying in his own strength, mind, logic and planning, yet he kept coming up short. Eventually, Simon's wife calls him out on not trusting God in all his work, and that very next morning, Jesus gives His faithful instruction. Simon decides to listen (though skeptical), and their boat begins to overflow with fish! So much so that Zebedee and his sons, John and James, have to bring their boat over to help. It brought tears to my eyes seeing Simon realize the power of trusting Jesus, so much so that he says he'll follow Jesus anywhere. As I watched this unfold, it brought to mind all the times we rely on ourselves - our strength, our "power," our logic and our plans - to bring in the "big catch" in business. Maybe you're in a place where you're desperate for the next client, the next invoice payment, or the next big opportunity. I've been there too, friend. And I would challenge you to think about how much you're trusting Jesus. So let me ask you: Are you trusting Jesus and His instruction to let down your nets? Have you ever heard the term conscientious objector? Maybe you have heard it in terms of military service. According to Dictionary.com:   A conscientious objector is a person who, for reasons of conscience, objects to complying with a particular requirement, especially when they're serving in the armed forces. They feel duty-bound to act according to deeply held religious or philosophical beliefs.   Last week on Memorial Day as Brian and I watched the movie Hacksaw Ridge, I got to thinking about how being a conscientious objectors to the world's way of doing business as usual is critical for us Christian business owners. By redefining hustle to emulate Jesus in our work is all about being duty-bound and fully surrendered to act according to how God defines and directs us. ⛔️ ⚠️ Unpopular opinion alert! ☢️ This episode might be touchy for you, but I believe it needs to be addressed (and the Holy Spirit told me to 😉 When I started my network marketing side hustle in 2010, I remember how empowering it felt to say I was a business owner. Being the proud person I was, I brought it up in every conversation I could. It usually sounded something like, "Now that I own my own business, I'm just working this job as I build my million dollar empire!" I know...🙄🙄🙄 Around that time, I recall the mantras in my business were things like: Find your tribe and love them hard! #bossbabe #bossmom Go make it happen! Run with the big dogs! If it is to be, it's up to me! (who are these "big dogs" we're supposed to run with, anyway? And does anyone really like to be called a big dog?) Because I was "all in" for "rocking it to the top," I bought into these words, the sentiment and the approach to business they suggest, for a long time. But let me tell you 'bout my Jesus. The fateful day I woke up and thought, "this is NOT what I thought success would be like!" with my outward, measurable success yet inward emptiness, He met me face down on the berber carpet. And with His invitation to salvation, everything changed (2 Corinthians 5:17). It changed the way I viewed business, the way I did business, and my vocabulary. Now those mantras and words bug me. Truthfully, they make me want to 🤮. And I realize that's an unpopular opinion in the world's roar of "girl power" and all that. Because us ambitious and high-achieving women are supposed to embrace being strong and powerful go-getters, right? But my take is that noise is meant to distract us from full surrender to Jesus, and turn our focus to what we can do in our own power. It's counter-cultural to rely on Him, to only let Him define and direct us, and to be obedient with our disciplined action. And that will look unpopular to the world. Yet counter-cultural is what we're commissioned to be. We are to be in the world but not of it. Because we are citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20), so we operate in His strength and power. As your coach, I'm here to hold you accountable for your surrender and obedience to the Lord in your business. So that's why I share this unpopular opinion with you. You don't have to agree with me - I still love you no matter what - yet I hope it gives you a new perspective of the world's noise.
