Day 142 Praise Him Anyhow! by Irvine Saint-Vilus
Bible Study & Devotional Day 142 📌Read Today's Passages 🔴 Praise Him Anyhow! Contributing Writer: Irvine Saint-Vilus When things are going well, such as getting a new job, receiving a promotion at work, closing the deal on a house, or buying a new car, it is no trouble to shout out, “Praise God!” Letting go with hands raised, and throwing a little shimmy dancing in the mix. However, when the bad news comes.. like discovering a sickness, losing a job, or experiencing the death of a loved one, it becomes very difficult. And for some, nearly impossible to praise God for those circumstances. Yet, it is beneficial for the believer to give God praise, especially during those times of trial and testing, and Scripture tells us why. In Psalm 118: 19-29, the psalmist teaches us several things about the importance of praise. Read More at www.ourgivenpurpose.com Join us each day as we read the One Year Bible together. Whatever trials we face, God is surely present because he knows we need him. He says if we call on him, he will be there to guide and protect us; he will heal us and give us peace. And since God can not lie, he is driven to defend his people and lead us in his ways. “We thank you God for everything that you are to us that we cannot be for you or ourselves. We thank you for setting a rule that says you will keep us and love us and reveal to us, what we need in this life, based on our confession to you. God, we thank you for revealing to us that man doesn’t have kingship and there hands can only stretch but so far. Day 140 An Inspired Vision, Responds with Authority by LaVonda McCullough
Bible Study & Devotional Day 140 📌 Read Today's Passages May 20, 2022 Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 15:22-23 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. 23 A person finds joy in giving an apt reply—and how good is a timely word! Do you have advisors? People you discuss your ideas and plans. Proverbs 15:22-23 reminds us that we need to consult counselors so that any foolish decisions are noticed and avoided. As we listen to LaVonda’s devotional think about the ways you seek advice, consult godly counselors, and focus on God’s perfect plan for your life. 🔴 An Inspired Vision, Responds with Authority written by: LaVonda McCullough "And Jesus responded, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things." Luke 20:8 Did you create a vision board for 2022? I did, and each year I prepared myself by cutting out pictures from magazines and gathering all the crayons and markers to make my yearly work of art beautiful so I could hang it in my office. Did you know that there is power in writing down goals and seeing them consistently? You may have experienced a thought telling you to start that business, lead a Bible Study, or take that much-needed vacation to an exotic island, but you're afraid to take that first step or believe you can achieve it. Day 139 Encouraging the Abigails by Torrie Slaughter
Bible Study & Devotional Day 139 📌 Read Today's Assigned Passages Guiding Scriptures: Proverbs 15:21, 'Folly brings joy to one who has no sense, but whoever has understanding keeps a straight course.' 🔴  Encouraging the Abigails written by: Torrie Slaughter 1 Samuel 25:2-3 Abigail was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband Nabal was wealthy, crude, and foolish(1 Samuel 25:25). David sent messengers to Nabal to request provisions and let him know how they protected his flocks. However, Nabal claimed ignorance and spoke harshly to David's men. (1 Samuel 25:10) Our guiding scripture for today's readings is the thread that links all our passages. Rejecting wisdom and the opportunity to align with God is folly. Nabal in our Old Testament reading and the religious leaders and people in the New Testament shared that mindset. It is present today, those who reject wisdom and truth. Day 138 Fear Murders by Torrie Slaughter
Bible Study & Devotional Day 138 📌 Read Today's Assigned Passages Guiding Scriptures: 1 Samuel 22:3-4 'And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come [out of Judah] and stay with you until I know what God will do for me.” Then he left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 🔴  Fear Murders written by: Torrie Slaughter Death, deceit, and destruction- those are the thoughts that invaded me as I read 1 Samuel 22. God is protecting King David and providing for his household. Why were priests killed in the process? Who is Doeg the Edomite, and what did he gain from performing such a gruesome order from Saul? We may not have the exact answer but, we can dissect the behavior because it is prevailing today. Fear, greed, and pride cause rebellion against our Almighty God. Before we insert ourselves into this narrative, we would be wise to think about the root. Read More at www.ourgivenpurpose.com Join us each day as we read the One Year Bible together. Day 137 Wealth Redefined by Lindsey Capron
Bible Study & Devotional Day 137 📌 Read Today's Passages (May 17, 2022) 🔴 Wealth Redefined Contributing Writer: Lindsey Capron I once saw a video on social media of a very famous celebrity getting interviewed. In the interview, a question was asked from the interviewer, “Now that you’re rich and famous, are you truly happy?” With an anxious and sad look in her eye, the celebrity took a moment to pause and think before answering. “Sometimes,” the celebrity said. “It’s nice that I can afford what I’ve always wanted for me and my family and not have to worry about money.” But the look of anxiety and sadness behind the million-dollar smile painfully bled through. Day 136 The Truth Will Set You Free by Tiffiany Langston
Bible Study & Devotional 136 📌 Read Today’s Passages (May 16, 2022) 🔴 The Truth Will Set You Free Contributing Writer: Tiffiany Langston I’m convinced that one of the most difficult undertakings in this life is honesty with self. We will go to great lengths to stay comfortable, avoid change, and not ‘see’ the person staring back at us in the mirror for who they truly are. Where are you currently? Emotionally, mentally and physically. I’ve surely been there! Unsure of how to answer that question because I hadn't taken the time to do the required self examination with honesty.  By the grace of God, I got fed up with myself and the pretentious life I was living. I now set aside time to do what God desires for me to do, to create lasting change. Read More at www.ourgivenpurpose.com Join us each day as we read the One Year Bible together. Day 135 A Different Perspective by Torrie Slaughter
Bible Study & Devotional Day 135 📌 Read Today's Assigned Passages Guiding Scriptures: 1 Samuel 17:23, 'As he was talking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke these same words again; and David heard him . ' 🔴  A Different Perspective written by: Torrie Slaughter For forty days, the Israelite and Philistine armies stood opposite one another with a valley between them. It may seem unusual for two armies to resist attacking in favor of one on one combat. In this case, a brave warrior was to fight Goliath, the champion from Gath. If the Israelites succeeded, the Philistines would be their servants; if not, the reverse would hold. Every day the armies assembled in battle formation and waited. The Israelites were terrified. No one wanted to bear the burden of losing against the Philistine army and cause the entire nation to be their slaves. Perhaps a few warriors thought they could claim victory, but fear and doubt seized their hearts. And then David... Day 134 Walking in the Light by Diana L.W. Coleman
Bible Study & Devotional Day 134 📌 Read Today's Passages (May 14, 2022) Guiding Scripture: John 8:12  When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 🔴 Walking In The Light written by: Diana L.W. Coleman Would you deliberately walk in the woods at night without a flashlight? Living in an evil, sin-filled world without having the Holy Bible to guide us, we would stumble, fall, and fail with no hope of restoration. When we study the Bible, we get a clear picture of how we live and have a light for us to stay on the right path. The world offers entanglements and false values to steer us into direct disobedience to what God wants for us. The world paints a picture of success and defines it by the accumulation of wealth, prestige, and carnal conditions by any means necessary. Bible Study & Devotional Day 132 📌 Read Today's Assigned Passages Guiding Scriptures: 1 Samuel 12:19-25 'As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. The people all said to Samuel, "Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king." "Do not be afraid," Samuel replied. "You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord , but serve the Lord with all your heart. Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own. But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will perish."' 🔴 Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right written by: Torrie Slaughter The people of Israel rejected the Lord as their Almighty King and opted for an earthly one. Someone they could 'see'. Amid their actions, Samuel took action by interceding on their behalf. Instead of waiting for God's wrath, the spirit of the Lord hastened Samuel. The people did evil in the sight of God, and yet, He had mercy. Read More at www.ourgivenpurpose.com Join us each day as we read the One Year Bible together. Day 131 Living Bread by Torrie Slaughter
Bible Study & Devotional Day 131 📌 Read Today's Assigned Passages Guiding Scriptures: John 6:51 'I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." ' 🔴 Living Bread written by: Torrie Slaughter Chapter 1 of the Gospel of John verse 14 tells us that the Word became flesh and dwelled among us. God's Son is full of grace and truth. Believers have the opportunity to live a life in eternity. The bread that God gives isn't just heavenly manna; He offers us, Heaven. The Holy Spirit transforms us as He works from within. Isn't that incredible?! We don't see how the physical food we eat benefits our bodies, yet we eat to satisfy an immediate hunger. The living bread will forever provide nourishment to our souls. Day 130 Righteousness: The Key to National Tranquility by Temi Michael-O
Bible Study & Devotional (Day 130) 📌 Read Today's Passages (May 10, 2022) Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 14:34-35 (KJV) Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. 35 The king's favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame. 🔴 Righteousness: The Key to National Tranquility Contributing Writer: Temi Michael-O While we are yet to have a nation where everyone is walking in God’s ways, everyone will benefit from living in a nation with laws that are right in God’s eyes. Shame and confusion are inevitable when the laws of our nations promote unrighteousness, injustice, and all forms of evil. So, what can we do on behalf of our nations? We can pray and repent. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV) says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Read More at www.ourgivenpurpose.com Join us each day as we read the One Year Bible together. Day 128 What Miracles Made You Believe? by Stephanie Bright
Bible Study & Devotional (Day 128) 📌Read Today's Passages (May 8, 2022) 🔴  “What Miracles Made You Believe?” Contributing Writer: Stephanie Bright The book of Psalms is always so captivating, as it bridges reflection and self-awareness, present and future. In verses 7 through 11, we are reminded of the miracle that God performed at the Red Sea to bring the people of Israel out of captivity. What a feat it was for God to part the Red Sea, and allow them to walk through on dry land. Then the miracle continued as God swallowed up the enemies as they attempted to walk in the same miracle that the Israelites had walked in. This was all God’s doing! You can see in verse 8 that it was intentionally designed by God: “Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power.” PSALM 106:8 ESV Read More at www.ourgivenpurpose.com Join us each day as we read the One Year Bible together. Day 127 Do You Want to Get Well?- By Reason Chandler
Bible Study & Devotional (Day 127) 📌 Read Today's Passages (May 7, 2022) Guiding Scripture: John 5:5-6, "One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" 🔴 Do You Want To Get Well? Written By Reason A. Chandler If I had been lying by the pool for thirty-eight years and didn't know who this man was, I might have been offended by the question. In the meantime, the question is valid and deserves an answer. His response should have been, "YES"; instead, the man begins to complain. Isn't that just like us? We have an opportunity to get healing; however, we need to point out the past and blame others! But his complaints serve as a lesson, one as old as the garden of Eden. Day 126 Redeem by Torrie Slaughter
Bible Study & Devotional Day 126 📌 Read Today's Assigned Passages Guiding Scriptures: Ruth 4:6 Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.” 🔴 Redeem written by: Torrie Slaughter Yesterday we began the story of Ruth, one of only two books of the Bible written by a woman. How will the Lord redeem her family? Ruth is an earthly ancestor of Christ our Lord. We also read how Christ presents redeeming living water to the woman at the well. Such great faith stories are woven together to show Jesus' compassion for humanity. As a woman of faith, I am often told what I am NOT allowed to do within the body of Christ. It is disheartening and liberating at the same time. The Word of God tells us that He uses everyone to proclaim His Gospel. We can glorify God, our Abba Father, in more ways than one. Day 125 It's Not Too Late- by Magan Martin
Bible Study & Devotional (Day 125) 📌Read Today's Passages (May 5, 2022) Guiding Scripture: Ruth 1:4 "After they had lived there about ten years. . ." Ruth 1:6 "When Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there." 🔴 It's Not Too Late Turning Away I can't tell you the number of times I've taken a short walk away from the Lord. In my most recent experience, I allowed myself to be ruled by my feelings. Anger. Pride. Hurt. So much hurt. See, back in 2011, my now ex-husband and I divorced. Wait, don't jump to conclusions. While that impacted my relationship with God, it was something else that caused me to step away. When the church I was attending at the time found out that we were divorcing, they quietly pulled me aside one morning after church and asked me not to return. They publicly proclaimed a target audience: men, ages 18-35. And while I certainly didn't meet those criteria, my soon-to-be ex-husband did, and the church had concluded that if I were to continue to attend there, he would not likely feel comfortable being there. Bible Study & Devotional Day 124 📌 Read Today's Passages (May 4, 2022) Guiding Scripture: Psalm 104:24 “O Lord, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.” 🔴 The Master Artist Contributing Writer: Christina Price Every morning as I take my kids to school, we make a specific turn that displays the horizon perfectly. Each day we see a different skyline, filled with various hues, cloud formations and absolute beauty. This sight sparks our morning prayer together. The Lord is a master artist and nature is an element appreciate his workmanship. His creativity in the natural world that is filled with an array of animals, birds, trees and flowers is far beyond my comprehension. The strength of immovable mountains to powerful oceans to the delicate beauty of a peony or a wildflower thriving in the most uncommon places. There was nothing to small or out of reach for our mighty God and his attention to detail is impeccable. The greatest part of it all is knowing that we (humans) are part of God’s workmanship. Day 123 Come to the Light by Detria Moore
Bible Study & Devotional Day 123 📌Read Today's Passages (May 3, 2022) Guiding Scripture: “ And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” John 3:19 🔴 Come to the Light By Detria Moore A while ago, I had a conversation with a family member who found herself in a dire and challenging situation caused by her own actions. She was a believer. So as we discussed possible outcomes, there was only one way this situation could play out, as the Bible is clear on that matter. I sat astonished as she started discussing alternative options that were not Christ-like. Personal benefit, freedom, and want to keep the situation hidden were the main factors in her decision-making. While she felt bad about the deliberate wrong choice she would make, it was not a deterrent. We are living in a time where people are choosing darkness over light. It makes sense because the Bible tells us this would happen. But why? There are two intriguing things to note in John 3:19: The first part of verse 19 provides a clue as to why some people choose darkness. It's part of the judgment. Judgment here means verdict- the consequence of those condemned because they have chosen not to believe. Their fate is to choose darkness even though the light has come into the world. Why?
