Bob Terzuola: The Knife Junkie Podcast (Episode 479)
Bob Terzuola, "Godfather of the Tactical Folder," joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 479 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/479).His first knives were fixed-blade combat knife designs made for soldiers, CIA operatives, and security personnel working in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. In 1984, Terzuola moved to New Mexico and began making folding knives. Seeing a need for a knife that could be carried discreetly, he developed a model using black micarta for scales and a bead-blasted titanium frame and coined the term "tactical knife.".Terzuola's most popular model is the ATCF (Advanced Technology Combat Folder), a linerlock folding knife. At first strictly tactical, he now makes the ATCF in a variety of exotic materials. He wrote the definitive book on making tactical folders called "The Tactical Folding Knife," which was most recently updated in 2019.Terzuola has collaborated with other knifemakers and production companies, including Spyderco, Strider Knives, WE/Civivi, Microtech Knives, and others. His Spyderco C-15 model was historic: it was the first liner lock made by a commercial factory, the first production knife with G-10 handles, and the first to have parts laser cut.His latest production collaboration is a version of the ATCF with FOX Knives Italy. Terzuola is releasing A Sharp Life, a video series Masterclass on knifemaking. He also offers ShopTalk a subscription service for knifemakers. In June 2023, Terzuola was inducted into the “Cutlery Hall of Fame” at Blade Show in Atlanta, Georgia.Find Terzuola online at https://terzuola.net and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/terzuola_design.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. Byron Ray, Wolf Dog Armory: The Knife Junkie Podcast (Episode 472)
Byron Ray of Wolf Dog Armory joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 472 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/472).A self-proclaimed IT nerd by day and bladesmith by night, Byron's knife company is named after the family dog, and he sees his knife-making as therapeutic, calling it "The Art of Recreational Hammer Therapy."Byron's great-grandfather was a blacksmith, and though Byron never knew him, his anvil sat behind his granddad's shop while he was growing up. He used that anvil to pound out spears and knives from a welding rod, but when he bought a knife blank and put a handle on it, he was hooked.College, a career, and raising kids put knife-making on hold for a few decades. After finding an old railroad spike at his granddad's shop, Byron began researching how to make a knife out of it.In 2013, Byron made his first "soup can" forge and made several knives with it, graduating later that year to a brake drum coal forge. Eventually he created his own propane forge and adopted a more professional process; after all, bladesmithing will be Byron's encore career.Wolfdog Armory produces traditional American-style fixed-blade knives, from hunters and scalpers to choppers and bowies.Find Wolf Dog Armory online at www.wolfdogarmory.com, Instagram at www.instagram.com/wolfdogarmory, and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wolfdogarmory.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. Michel Kahil, 310 Forge: The Knife Junkie Podcast (Episode 465)
Michel Kahil of 310 Forge joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 465 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/465).Michel always loved working with his hands and grew to love knives through his renowned knife-maker grandfather, Henry Frank. It was in college that Michel discovered his affinity for crafting, starting with leather and knives as a creative outlet and break from school. His brother, a journeyman blacksmith, taught Michel the basics of the trade and started him on his knife-making path. In the beginning, he broke a lot of knives but studied the masters and the manuals to hone his craft. In 2016, Michel finally felt confident enough in his work to start selling the tools he was making to hard-working users. Unhappy with the quality of mass-produced knives, 310 Forge knives aim to be tougher and sharper than anything out there. In 2017, Michel met his wife, Kazmine. Her encouragement inspired the expansion of the company, and they took to the road, selling knives at shows in the region. In November 2020, they turned 310 Forge into a "real business" when Michel quit his day job and went full-time.Michel's goal is to provide his customers with usable knives that can be passed down from generation to generation. His knives are forged from high-carbon steel with time-tested techniques. His work is also a testament to his love of tools, and he gives all the glory to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.Find 310 Forge online at https://310forge.square.site, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/310forge, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/310Forge.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content.
