Inter the Winner in the Milan v Juventus Big Match
NEW! Become a Chronicles Tifoso by joining our Patreon for exclusive patron-only podcast episodes and bonus content coming in 2022! Join us at patreon.com/SerieAChronicles and check out our new website at serieachronicles.com ****** Milan and Juventus played out a dull 0-0 draw at San Siro with Inter being the only winner. Ibrahimovic went off injured and shots on target were few and far between. But this is Serie A, so of course there is still plenty to talk about! Simone Inzaghi's men needed an Andrea Ranocchia wondergoal to equalise late on and send their mid-week Coppa Italia match with Empoli in to extra time, which they then went on to win, and it was some tired legs who suffered for the win against a solid Venezia side. Inter needed another late goal, this time to snatch a winner via Edin Dzeko's head. Nicky and Mina ponder whether these battling wins are a sign of resilience, and does their current form stand them in good stead in light of the coming Champions League clash with Liverpool? Nicky says Lazio have been a frustrating and perplexing team this season, while we were introduced to some Atalanta youngsters. Mina's evil twin confuses us by wishing Insigne stays in Napoli... or is it Dries Mertens, and elsewhere Roma did a job at Empoli, and the inevitable discussion about Vlahovic's impending move to Juventus. Will it happen in this transfer window? (Subscribe to our Patreon membership for an in-depth analysis of the situation by Mina Rzouki, and you can get a preview of that conversation in our regular podcast feed). And we close the show with possibly the best we've ever seen of Mario Balotelli in light of his re-call to Roberto Mancini's Italy squad for this week's Azzurri training camp. More discussion on that to come next week, so stay tuned! 02:52 Milan v Juventus 28:40 Nicky discusses the interview with Milan manager Stefano Pioli 31:52 Chronicles Tifosi 34:08 Inter v Venezia 45:38 Lazio v Atalanta 51:10 Empoli v Roma 54:00 Napoli and Lorenzo Insigne (and Dries Mertens) ****** This episode is sponsored by Calido Media. Roma & Juventus Provide a Serie A Classic
NEW! Become a Chronicles Tifoso by joining our Patreon for exclusive patron-only podcast episodes and bonus content coming in 2022! Join us at patreon.com/SerieAChronicles. ****** Mina is well again as both she and Nicky enjoyed a Christmas and new year break, and Serie A in 2022 is off to a flyer with more crazy matches and tennis scores. The most incredible match came from the Eternal City as Allegri's Juventus staged an unexpected comeback against Mourinho's Roma in a 7-goal thriller. Mina and Nicky break down how it all happened, as well as the importance of Alvaro Morata's contribution to Juve's comeback, Jose Mourinho's lack of ideas to close out the match after Roma went ahead 3-1, and Federico Chiesa's knee injury and the implications for Juventus' season and Italy's World Cup qualification prospects. Elsewhere, Inter continued its seemingly unstoppable run with a win over Lazio. We break down what happened with new year match postponements and new COVID-19 protocols for the league. Milan produced some excellent performances with wins over Roma and Venezia in the opening rounds of the year with Rafael Leão shining for the rossoneri. And, in an interesting conversation, Nicky and Mina offer differing insights and opinions as we go deep on Lorenzo Insigne's decision to leave his home town and club Napoli to sign for Toronto FC in the MLS. 05:28 Roma v Juventus 31:09 COVID-19 postponement chaos 38:04 Inter v Lazio 47:44 Napoli and Insigne 61:30 Milan ****** This episode is sponsored by Calido Media. La Moviola: a look back at our 2021
Yes, we're doing what every podcast seems to be doing lately, and looking back at some of the many Serie A Chronicles highlights of 2021. Here's a fun episode with snippets from our guests which included Mark Bosnich, Sacha Pisani, Gabriele Marcotti and Venezia's American star Gianluca Busio. We also take a look back at Mina's and Nicky's reaction right after Italy's final World Cup Qualifier match where they failed to qualify directly for the World Cup, and instead were left to face the dreaded playoffs. And we laugh at Mina's shout-out to our Chronicles Tifosi with one of her famous limericks. We'll be back to properly kick off 2022 next week after the first rounds of Serie A for the year! 01:02 Mark Bosnich's almost-Juventus story 11:28 Sacha Pisani asks whether Federico Chiesa should be looking to move on 13:15 We got the band back together with Gab Marcotti 25:26 Gianluca Busio talks Venezia and Italian football tactics 30:03 We loved talking about Fiorentina's Dušan Vlahović 39:09 Mancini's Italy gave us a footballing heart-attack 48:48 Mina introduces us to her poetic prowess ****** This episode is sponsored by Calido Media. It's our final Q&A for 2021! Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA. This week's questions: Nicky & Mina, you two are the Serie A Santa. You get to hand out a lump of coal to one player and one coach each and a Panettone to one player and one coach each. Who is on your naughty and nice list so far this season & what flavour Panettone? Buon Natale!  -Panettone Dave (formerly Inter Dave, Hamilton, Canada)  Would it be crazy for Milan to try Theo as a left winger? I mean, he's got everything you want from your winger, plus Rebic has been out for most of the season so far. -Siddhant (Sagar, India) Could we see an era of dominance for Inter over the next 5 years? Inzaghi will probably stay that long as will Beppe Marotta. Players can be sold and good replacements brought into the 3-5-2 system even on a budget. Inter are the Campioni d'Inverno
In our final Serie A Chronicles "main show" of 2021, we go deep into discussion about the Winter Champions - Campioni d'Inverno - Inter, which is fast becoming Mina's favorite team. We discuss the Salernitana ownership crisis and whether they will be booted from Serie A after the new year, with their situation compounded by a COVID-19 scare and match postponement amid the Omicron variant wave taking hold in Italy and Europe. Is Juventus at risk of creeping in to the top 4 now that they're only four points away? And do they lose motivation against smaller teams? We smash Milan and Napoli together because they played against each other and appear to have the highest chances of being the "anti-Inter" and... should Kessie's disallowed goal have stood? Mourinho created a blueprint for stopping Gasperini's Atalanta in Roma's Tammy Abraham-inspired counter-attacking masterclass, and then threw it away against Sampdoria in a dull draw. Maurizio Sarri is an enigma. And we wrap up the show with the highlight of the year from the best Italian commentary duo: Fabio Caressa and Giuseppe Bergomi. 03:38 Inter 19:34 Salernitana 30:18 Juventus 42:56 Milan and Napoli 61:28 Atalanta and Roma 69:12 Lazio ****** This episode is sponsored by Calido Media. This week's questions: Is Serie A losing its identity with almost every team playing high-press attacking football OR is this the best way forward? -Bully Maguire (New Delhi) I have been asking people this question for years. If y’all can answer on the next pod. Why do people undervalue Serie A? The answer I commonly get is that it's slow and boring. I understand it's not what it used to be but every league has ups and downs yet Serie A gets more hate. -Inder Mann (Brooklyn) Considering Giovanni Simeone’s current form, will he finally find himself a home in Serie A following his loan spell at Hellas and where do you think he will end up?  -Inter Dave (Hamilton, Canada) Can you let us know in your next Q&A pod what's happened to Juventus's defence this season and what needs to happen for them to stop leaking goals? It's sunshine and rainbows mixed with doom and gloom this week, as we recorded right after UEFA finally got their balls together for the Champions League RE-draw and worked out which way around they should be! Venezia FC & USMNT Star Gianluca Busio
Venezia's star midfielder Gianluca Busio joined Mina Rzouki and Nicky Bandini to discuss life in Italy and Serie A since his transfer from Sporting Kansas City in the MLS. In a wide-ranging interview, the thoughtful Busio talks about why he chose Venezia, the family oriented culture within the club and among the players in the dressing room, the different tactics in Serie A, his Italian roots and connection with his Italian family, and his rapport with the American players in Serie A and in the United States national team. We also asked Gianluca about his ambitions for the future, which players he likes to watch most, and we find out which is his favorite barbecue in Kansas City! Mourinho cornered by Inter
This week it was another Inter triplete, this time with 3 goals against former manager Jose Mourinho as his Roma side offered little resistance to the reigning champions, despite an amazing "tifo" from the Olimpico faithful. We preview our interview with Venezia and USMNT star Gianluca Busio, who spoke to Mina Rzouki and Nicky Bandini about his time in Serie A so far and Sporting Kansas City previously, his Italian roots and his ambitions for the future. It was a wide-ranging and interesting discussion about life as a young player in Serie A, which will be dropping this Friday. You can catch some great snippets here in the main show. In another crazy goal-fest of a Serie A weekend that saw Milan go top, Napoli slipped back to third behind both Milan clubs after a narrow loss to Gasperini's brilliant Atalanta side in the match of the round which Nicky described as "so effing good!". We discuss the injuries plaguing some of the league's top players and clubs, and will Dusan Vlahovic decide to stay in Italy or will the likes of Tottenham or Manchester City capture his signature? Mina was excited about a Juventus victory and Paulo Dybala being awarded Serie A player of the month, as we round up of the rest of the exciting weekend. Chronicles Q&A #11
Get your questions in for Mina and Nicky for the Serie A Chronicles Q&A show. Each week we answer your questions tweeted to us at @serieAchronpod using the hashtag #ChroniclesQandA. This week's questions: Hello, enjoy the show, I was curious to see what you both believe it would take for Milan to feel comfortable competing in the higher tier of the European transfer market again, or to be willing to take a less than stellar compromise to keep quality players like Kessie and Donnarumma? Multiple years of UCL play, or a string of Scudettos? Would a marked improvement only come from something as large as a renewed stadium deal, or the restructuring of Italian Football as a whole? -Nick McGinn (Brooklyn, New York) Atalanta are making great progress on their stadium renovation. The outcome will be lovely. Given how difficult new stadiums are in Italy, how did they pull this off so well? -Daniel (Providence, Rhode Island)  Regarding Vlahovic, just on the off chance he doesn't go to Juve, which seems the most likely destination to me, which club do you think he'd be most suited to in terms of style and squad competition, etc? Is there any chance, say, Bayern or Real could rival the English clubs for him? -Ted  Hi Mina and Nicky, Been listening to your podcasts since 2 years and love them. Question on Italy's recent games - Mancini has tried Immobile, Belotti and Insigne (false 9) for the central striker. Why doesn’t he try a big target man from the start - Scamacca, Petagna, Lorenzo Lucca (who seems most promising)? Wouldn’t that give something different to the other little players who pass well? -Kunal Soni (Florida) ********** For sponsorship opportunities with Serie A Chronicles podcast email marketing@mediachronicles.com.au. What's Wrong With You, Juve?... with Sacha Pisani
Another turbulent weekend of Serie A action as Juventus' poor run continued with a home loss to Atalanta following a Champions League lesson against Chelsea, and, as was requested by a listener... yes, Mina does go on a (very warranted) rant about all of her frustrations regarding her beloved bianconeri. Keeping with the podcast's Australian connection, this week Nicky and Mina are joined by Melbourne-based Digital Journalist for Stats Perform, Sacha Pisani (@Sachk0), to discuss the latest happenings in the land of calcio. Sacha recently wrote an interesting article about the growing popularity of brand Venezia: From bankruptcy to global fashion icon – the rise of Italy's renaissance team Venezia. Other topics in focus this week: Milan fall at home to Sassuolo, who love beating them, with a cracking strike from Gianluca Scamacca. Is he Italy's new hope? Are the wheels falling off the Milan bus coming into Christmas, just as they did around the same time last season? Does Sacha think Milan can win the league, or will it be Napoli, or Inter? As well as the progress of the Italian teams in the Champions League, with a chance that all 4 of Juventus, Atalanta, Inter and Milan (albeit only a slight chance for the rossoneri) could make it through the group stage to the next round. Italy's World Cup Qualification play-off draw against North Macedonia and a potential collision-course with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. A Bonkers Serie A Weekend... and Dušan Vlahović
It was an amazing weekend of Serie A action with some exciting games. First losses for the top 2, including a Dušan Vlahović-inspired Fiorentina win over Milan. Then we saw Leonardo Bonucci's penalty prowess in Juventus' away win at Lazio, and Inter's toppling of top-of-the-pops Napoli to claw back some ground on the front-runners in another high scoring and entertaining affair. Elsewhere, Atalanta took the points in a 7-goal fun-fest against Spezia, and Jose Mourinho unearthed a gem for Roma when 18 year old Ghanaian Felix Afena-Gyan came on as a late substitute to score a spectacular double to take three points from Genoa... but what does that mean for Nicolò Zaniolo who was benched for the full match after reports of a training ground disagreement with the Special One mid-week? 03:10 Inter v Napoli 19:00 Fiorentina v Milan 34:50 Lazio v Juve 46:34 Genoa v Roma... and a summary of the rest Don't forget our ChroniclesQ&A mailbag show on Friday. Draws with Switzerland and Northern Ireland saw the Swiss qualify as group winners, leaving Gli Azzurri needing the dreaded play-off pathway in March to get to Qatar. Nicky and Mina break it down for us. What are the problems? What about Jorginho's penalty woes? What are Mancini's options? Where will the goals come from in the play-offs? What has happened to the element of surprise that they had at the Euros? Plus... Poetry chaos, and the Christmas run-in report card. Which managers will get to eat their panettone? And stick in to the end as we end with a good World Cup Qualification play-off memory featuring one Pierluigi Casiraghi (can he make a comeback???), coincidentally also from November 15th, all the way back in 1997. 00:00 Italy's road to Qatar 29:40 Mina's limerick 33:20 The Serie A Christmas run-in Don't forget our ChroniclesQ&A mailbag show on Friday.
