Nineteen students and at least two teachers were murded during a shooting at a primary school in Texas, the latest in a spate of mass shootings in the United States. The 18-year-old gunman carried out the killings at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde. Authorities say the carnage began when the suspect, shot his own grandmother, who survived. The future of 13 golf courses on Auckland Council land is under the spotlight as their leases are due to expire and the city faces a desperate shortage of land for housing and recreation. The Auckland Council wants to make changes to the overall plan that governs those courses to make way for other recreational activities like walking, running and cycle paths. There's been a prolonged battle to fight off plans to divvy up the Chamberlain Park golf course in Mt Albert, turning it from 18 holes into a nine hole course alongside a sports field and a public park. So could the golf courses be better utilised for recreation? Or what about housing? In a moment we'll hear from Bill McKay, who's a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland's School of Architecture and Planning. Volunteers spent yesterday picking up glass shards from the sports fields at St Joseph's Primary School in Levin after a tornado ripped through parts of the town on Friday. More than 30 properties were damaged in the tornado, with seven so far deemed uninhabitable. Fortunately that's not the case for the school ... but it did not get off lightly. Maria Lyne is the principal of St Joseph's Catholic School and she spoke with Nathan Rarere.

The World Health Assembly has convened in Switzerland - the organisation is marking its 75th anniversary in Geneva. And there, representing New Zealand is our Minister of Health Andrew Little - and he spoke to Nathan Rarere.

A six month trial begins today using safety cameras to better understand the scale of distracted driving in New Zealand. Waka Kotahi is trialling cameras on three Auckland highways to see how many people use their phone behind the wheel. Back home now where the number of new Covid case yesterday dropped below 5-thousand for the first time in three months. So a positive sign but the majority of new cases are now thought to be of the more transmissible BA2 subvariant of Omicron. And with winter just around the corner, experts are warning people not to get complacent because a second wave could be on the way. Joining Nick Trubridge is University of Otago public health epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker.

Anthony Albanese is the new Prime Minister of Australia, with Labor seizing power from the Scott Morrison-led coalition and bringing Labor out of the political wilderness to government in Australia. Mr Albanese is to be sworn in as PM later today, but it is not yet clear whether his party will have a majority in parliament. Labor needs to win 76 seats to be able to claim a majority in the federal Parliament. Scott Morrison has announced he'll be standing down as leader of the Liberal Party after a disastourous night in which a number of formerly safe Liberal seats were taken by independent candidates. Nick Trubridge discussed the results with the ABC's Gavin Coote and began by asking: who is Anthony Albanese and what sort of Prime Minister will he be?
