In episode 6, Dismantling Power Imbalances, co-hosts Kristen Ruiz and Geneva Mayne discuss manual therapy as an agentic practice with special guest, Walt Fritz, PT. Though manual therapies can be highly effective, it is important for clinicians to explain what they are doing and why before palpating, massaging or repositioning a patient’s larynx. We also discussed how shared decision-making can help build trust and create psychologically safe interactions where power is shared between clinicians and patients or educators and students. Shared decision-making is integrated in trauma-informed approaches under the key principles of collaboration and mutuality; empowerment, voice and choice; and trustworthiness and transparency.
