Research is an important aspect of writing a book. Knowing how, when and where to use the details you discover will create believable characters or a realistic world in fiction, and in non-fiction it helps to deliver on the promise you offer your readers. Multi-genre author Pat Black-Gould and I talked about the pivot she did from writing and publishing a children’s book to her first historical fiction adult novel. To add to this shift, Pat shared how she worked with her co-author for the novel, especially since she had 80,000 words for their working draft. So many times we tell ourselves what’s not working, rather than what’s possible. We can beat ourselves because we haven’t seen the success we envisioned when we did our book release, or participated at a book signing, or using social media. We end up focusing on what we don’t want. To shift that and get to where you want to go, I suggest adding one word and why in this short-n-sweet episode.
