Becoming the Ultimate Coach #8: 5 Things NOT to do/Stop Doing
On this week's Becoming the Ultimate Coach, the Jock (Scott Schutte) and the Doc (Dr. Janine Stichter) breakdown the top 5 things to stop doing right now to become a better coach and trainer. 1. Stop making it about you-First impressions for trainers/coaches are mainly online. Most if not all clients will look up the person before training with them. Your social media needs to show the type of trainer you are, not what workout you did today or your before/after pics. Use your profile to show how you are going to help potential clients. The easiest way to do that is by highlighting your current clients.  2. Look like/Be a professional-Clean clothes, being on time and if your client's program has special equipment for the day, have it ready and waiting for them. A trainer/coach running around to gather things while their client performs their warm-up isn't going to leave the client with the impression of being trained by a professional. 3. Keep a clean gym- We know that all coaches and trainers don't have the ultimate say on their gym space but they can all keep things organized. Don't leave weights, bands, etc. laying around. Have designated areas for equipment so you aren't wandering around looking for something during your client's training session. All these small things help to build on the impression of you as a professional.4. Stop assuming your clients' perspectives-Financial, political, or otherwise, a quick way to lose a client is to assume their perspectives align with yours. This doesn't mean to shy away or not have discussions with clients but leaves your non-fitness/health-related opinions out of it. 5. (Maybe most important) Stop acting like you have all the answersThe quickest way to lose all credibility is to fake it. There's no way to know about every ailment, illness, or injury your client has but you can learn about it and how you can help them. Be supportive and help them find a solution even if the solution is not you.
