Our Editor's Take

Father and daughter team Kate and Charlie Gibson know the joy of discovering a great book. When the pandemic kept them apart, they found a way to connect through their love of reading. That's how The Book Case Podcast became a reality. From ABC News, this is a great listen for book lovers looking for a new favorite.

Kate Gibson is a former executive producer at PBS. Her father, Charlie Gibson, is a retired anchor for Good Morning America. They are also voracious readers. Now, they connect listeners to their favorite authors and fellow book lovers. They interview legendary authors like John Irving. Oprah Winfrey also joins them to share her favorite books. Here, listeners will discover new genres and titles worth exploring. They will also hear from independent bookstore owners about what readers take off their bookshelves most. Even the first female Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, sits down for a great interview.

The Book Case Podcast also examines individual books and their authors. Nahid Shahalimi examines her book, We Are Still Here, capturing the voices of Afghan women. Writer Angie Cruz discusses her incredible character study, How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water. And Sidik Fofana reflects on his work of short stories, Stories from the Tenants Downstairs. Other guests include Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan and the cherished Sue Miller. Listeners will add a new book to their list of books to read with each episode.

This father and daughter's rapport is comforting and entertaining. But their love of reading and stories is only one significant aspect of this podcast. This podcast is a place to discover new characters, authors, and book club selections in one place.

Jodi Picoult Envisions A Woman Behind Shakespeare's Work
Have you ever heard the rumor that Shakespeare didn’t write his own plays? So had we, but By Any Other Name, the new novel by Jodi Picoult, may make the best case for it we have ever read. This novel puts forth a theory that Emilia Bassano wrote at least some of them, and she is an unforgettable character. This book succeeds on so many levels — a polemic, a great piece of feminist AND historical fiction, AND it’s a page turner. This is the book Jodi says she was born to write…and we think it’s her best to date. Hope Jahren Expands on Mark Twain
Every so often, a new author tackles the work of expanding a classic novel to expand its reach. Even more rarely, they succeed beautifully. This week’s book, Adventures of Mary Jane is just such a rare gem. Mary Jane's author, Hope Jahren, is a scientist (a geochemist, no less) who decided to write the story of Mary Jane, a character that haunted her from the pages of Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn her entire life. It is both a magical adventure story and an authentic and well written coming of age drama. This week’s bookstore is Where the Sidewalk Ends, which is also run by two generations in tandem. We talk to them about how they do it…and we commiserate on working with daughters and parents. Join us.
