Witness a cavalcade of Fall River locals, Borden family members, and frustrated District Attorneys go back and forth attempting to establish a factual timeline for the events of August 4th, 1892 - a day that saw two prominent members of the Fall River community brutally hacked to death by person or persons unknown. It all culminates with the multi-day testimony of Lizzie Borden herself, swiftly becoming Person of Interest #1 and offering up a frustrating array of half-truths, vague responses, and outright contradictions that will eventually end with her charged with double homicide. And meet some new characters who will only become more important next week: DA Hosea Knowlton, a Teddy Roosevelt-type plain dealer, and his counterpart, defense attorney Andrew Jennings - known both for his shrewd intellect and fly dance moves. In 1907, English businessman J Bruce Ismay sat down with his partners at the shipping company White Star Line to dream up the newest three ships in the White Star Line's fleet, destined to be bigger, more luxurious, and possibly even faster than anything White Star Line or any of their competitors had managed to build to that time. By 1912, two of the ships had been constructed: the Olympic, and the bigger, heavier Titanic. The latter especially would draw fascination from the world over, with the public breathlessly following the construction and all of the glamorous amenities that were being installed on the floating resort, including gourmet restaurants, Turkish baths, and even a full-sized saltwater swimming pool. While the Second Class was living in luxury and the Third Class passengers were able to experience better accommodations than any other passenger liner sailing at the time, it would be the First Class passengers that both would truly experience the entire breadth of the opulence created on Titanic, and be the de facto "celebrities" of the ship's maiden voyage, with some of them being among the very wealthiest on Earth. That maiden voyage would begin on April 10th, 1912, when the Titanic departed from Southampton England for its eventual destination - New York City Harbor. Unfortunately - and infamously - it would never arrive. In this episode, we begin a 3-part series on the tragedy of the Titanic with the backstory of the construction and the decisions made in the pre-voyage process that would eventually doom the magnificent ship to sink to its watery grave in the cold waters of the Nova Scotian Atlantic. After a few weeks of brutality, Carrie returns with a slightly silly tale from pre-WW2 Britain: the story of Gef, a trickster entity (or spirit? or poltergeist? or cryptid? or...) who presented himself as a talking mongoose to the Irving family, and both harassed and cozied up with the Irvings until the end of World War II. Gef, as he preferred to be called, allegedly told the Irvings - father James, mother Margaret, and 13-year-old daughter Voirrey - that he was the spirit of an Indian mongoose, born in 1852 in Delhi. Somehow, he made his way to the Isle of Man, and in 1931 began appearing and talking to the Irving family, who were living on a farm in Dalby. Word got around of the Irvings' strange visitor, and before long, both the media and paranormal investigators began knocking on the door of the farm at Doarlish Cashen to try and meet what had become known as the "Dalby Spook". Was Gef real? Was he a spirit? A poltergeist, conjured by the lonely, pubescent Voirrey? A hoax perpetrated by one or all of the Irving family? A tulpa created by their shared hysteria?
