Season 2 Episode 10 Dad Like a Seahorse: My deeply wise, rich, thoughtful conversation with visual artist, songwriter, poet Dad Chad Elliott
This episode of Dad Like a Seahorse left me both laughing and crying for days. Visual artist, songwriter, poet, Chad Elliott, has so much to share about being a dad to his three children and now one granddaughter after growing up without a dad. So much wisdom and depth and hilariousness (why is talking about farting always funny?). Hear about Chad's children's book of stories and gorgeous, bold artwork Wilderman's Treetop Tales be moved by his original poem. Listen to his life-changing moment of returning to his six-year-old self, finding his way back to being playful, messy, comfortable in his skin, and light-hearted self. Hear what it feels like to be "that person" who makes a difference in a troubled young boy's life. Be moved by what Chad imagines his daughter saying about what it was like to have Chad as her dad. This is a wonderful conversation. Please enjoy and share it. Elisabeth Harrod, B. A. DLAS Season 2 Episode 7: My conversation with Dr. Bill Thomas about Bossy Dads & Guardrails

DLAS Season 2 Episode 7: My conversation with Dr. Bill Thomas about Bossy Dads & Guardrails
Dr. Bill Thomas is the dad of five children. He is also  a physician, professor, entrepreneur, playwright, and performer whose wide-ranging work explores the terrain of human aging. His dedication to culture change and innovations for well-being led the Wall Street Journal to highlight Dr. Thomas as one of the nation’s “top 10 innovators” changing the future of retirement in America and US News and World Report named him to its list of “America’s best leaders.” I would love for you to tune into our conversation about how all five of his children are so different, his own childhood love of books, and why he didn't take his dad up on his offer to get a job at the plant. This is a beautiful conversation about following children's lead whether it's off to the military or giving his son a forge for his 11th birthday. Two of Dr. Thomas's children were born with a rare medical condition that shaped his dad journey. There is so much wisdom and love in this conversation. Enjoy!https://drbillthomas.org/about/Elisabeth Harrod, B. A. Season 1 Episode 9 Dad Like a Seahorse: Jonathan Byrd's Son, Puzzles & Sushi
In this Episode of Dad Like a Seahorse, I  talk to North Carolina-based Songwriter/Teacher Jonathan Byrd about his journey from being a kid in the Navy to being an awesome Dad to his twelve year old son, Rowan. We explore what it will be for Rowan to starting living life without school & how different that growing up experience will be from Jonathan's own teen years in school. We explore the intersection of Physics & Philosophy. You'll get a to hear Rowan's song, Little Bird (written before he was born). We talk about the importance of working puzzles & eating sushi.Jonathan talks about, "Being the dad I wanted." It's a wonderful conversation. I hope you enjoy it and share it with other dads. More from Jonathan ...I’m a Teacher.I’ve traveled the world with my songs. Now I want to teach you how to write them. For more than twenty years, I’ve made my living writing, recording, publishing, and licensing my own songs. I’ve won awards- my personal favorite being the Kerrville New Folk award in 2003 with fellow winners Anais Mitchell, writer of the multiple Tony Awards® winning “Hadestown”, and Colin Brooks of the Band of Heathens- and I’ve been covered by great artists like Sam Bush, Larry Keel, and Red Molly. I still just want to write the next great song. I want to be knocked over by songs, talk about songs, take them apart, rewrite them and figure out how they work. That’s why I love teaching- because I learn so much. Anyone can write songs. The desire to do it IS the talent. If you want to write songs, I can teach you how. I’m the little guy, by the way. He had big dreams, and he made it. Now I’ve got another big dream. I want to hear YOUR song. Your fan, Jonathan Byrdhttps://www.jonathanbyrd.com/Elisabeth Harrod, B. A. Season 1 Episode 3: Jon Camp talks about his journey as a father and how his "fathering" has changed over the years.
In this episode of Dad Like a Seahorse, I have a great conversation with Jon Camp about what being a father means to him. He explores the differences between his relationship with his two biological kids who live on the west coast and his stepson. We explore the idea of becoming friends with our kids - how does that happen and what would that look like? Jon Camp was born in Seattle, Washington and spent years moving around the country. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Yale and a Master's degree in Journalism from Syracuse, he started a career as a television news reporter that took him across the country. Starting at WWNY in Watertown, NY, he moved on to KESQ in Palm Springs, WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, WMTW in Portland, Maine and finally ABC11 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jon’s last position in TV news was Managing Editor of the I-Team. He earned multiple Emmys along the way and moderated both U.S. Senatorial and Congressional debates. Jon left the news in 2017 and now runs a video production company, Ever Living Memories, helping families and individuals share and preserve their most important memories and moments (www.everlivingmemories.com). Jon's an accomplished singer/songwriter and loves mountain biking, hiking, camping, and all things outdoors. He also loves reading up on history and painting. He lives in Raleigh with his fiancé and step son. His two biological kids live in California. Elisabeth Harrod, B. A.
