The Effect of Masculinity on Drinking - Dr. Jessica Perrotte

Shared Experiences

Aug 30 2023 • 44 mins

Dr. Jessica Perrotte completed both her Ph.D. and M.S. in psychology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her research explores how health risk behaviors are situated within a network of interrelated factors. Much of her recent and ongoing work examines the links between broad sociocultural processes (e.g., acculturation, gender role socialization) and hazardous drinking among young adults.

To start the guys get right into it and ask Jessica if men are statically more likely to abuse alcohol than women before asking about how masculinity norms influence abusive drinking. This causes Casey to bring up the timeline of when this pressure actually starts and how guys can avoid it before Josh asks Jessica about her research on Hispanic cultures specifically and why there may be differences in habits across cultures. Switching topics, Casey asks if these trends are similar to smoking/other drugs before Josh follows up on if risky sexual behavior is on the same trend. Moving on, the guys discuss whether tendencies toward abusing alcohol are caused more by social influence or genetics before asking about how the recent decline in men's mental health can be contributing to abusing alcohol. The guys end the conversation by talking about the resources needed to assist young men struggling with alcohol/drug abuse.
