Are you one of the people for whom public speaking is scarier than death? Do you want to get better at speaking so you can push your ideas at work or communicate better? You're in good company - today, I'm speaking with Adriana Baer, a NYC theatre director and public speaking coach.
Adriana starts by sharing her definition of public speaking that'll put in perspective why we shouldn’t avoid it: any situation we speak to one or more people we don’t know that well (or at all!) can be considered public speaking. Public speaking is not only going up the TED stage or presenting to hundreds of people, but it's something we do daily.
We chat about the tiniest daily actions each of us can take to get better at speaking – talking to strangers, recording stories or setting limitations on how long we'll be recording that 5-minute video. These baby steps will show us that we are safe in public speaking and can do it. We also chat about how potential negative reactions can be a good thing if we approach it with the right state of mind.
We dig deeper into different strategies how to tackle our fear of public speaking and what to focus on. Adriana shares her #1 most important step when starting, one thing all successful speakers do and we chat about the importance of practice.
I share what helped me during my TEDx talk and a bit about my journey from being terrified of speaking in front of the camera to having an amazing time on the TEDx stage.
If you want to get better at public speaking, get some concrete actions and hacks, or get inspired by a fun, yet inspiring conversation, pop in those headphones, listen to this episode and choose to get stuff done and Screw Being Unhappy, even if it is one tiny step a day!
