Take a deep dive into the October 7th massacre, Israel's worst emergency. In this mini-series of eight podcast episodes, co-hosts Dovie Maisel and Elad Bachar will take you minute by minute through that harrowing day, showcasing United Hatzalah's response from the first responders in the field to the commanders at headquarters. In this eighth and final episode, they are joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Sharon Slater and Deputy Medical Director Avi Marcus. They discuss the mobilization of psychotrauma specialists early on October 7 to guide those in immediate need and then shift their focus to the long-term plan of reaching out to each of the 1,800 volunteers who bravely responded, ensuring they receive the necessary mental health care to prevent PTSD and burnout. They also discuss the deployment of a dedicated psychotrauma team at United Hatzalah's field center in Sde Yoav, which provided a psychotrauma debriefing after each ambulance shift returned to base.This mini-series is dedicated in memory of those who tragically lost their lives on October 7 and in honor of those brave citizens, police officers, firefighters, medical personnel, and soldiers who left the safety of their homes and put their lives in danger to save their fellow Israelis. Together with EMTs Chaim Attias and Shalom Avitan, they helped rescue 2 10-month-old twins from Kfar Aza, as well as treated and transported dozens of victims, saving many lives. In this mini-series of eight podcast episodes, co-hosts Dovie Maisel and Elad Bachar will take you minute by minute through that harrowing day, showcasing United Hatzalah's response from the first responders in the field to the commanders at headquarters. In this sixth episode, they are joined by Dr. Shlomo Gensler, an anesthesiologist in one of the busiest Jerusalem hospitals, who, in his spare time, volunteers with United Hatzalah. Dr. Gensler, who saved hundreds on October 7 due to his quick actions, describes taking calls guiding patients who were trapped in Gaza Pariphary towns that were surrounded by terrorists, making the decision to take his Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambucar down to help, and arriving at Heletz. Dr. Gensler, along with United Hatzalah EMT Moishe Paskesz, then entered the active areas to save as many lives as possible. They set up shop in Netivot, providing triage and treating many patients that were brought there, and eventually moved on to Shuva Junction, where they worked deep into the night. Thanks to the professional work of Dr. Gensler and his colleagues, many more patients from that horrific day survived.
