Our Editor's Take

The Al Franken Podcast is a podcast with a liberal—and funny—political slant. This is fitting, because host Al Franken has big achievements in both politics and comedy. Franken is a former US senator. Before that, he was a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live and worked on the comedy show starting with its 1975 debut. Self-help leader Stuart Smalley was Franken's most famous character on SNL.

Listeners to The Al Franken Podcast will hear many types of guests. He talks to many people who make a living in politics. Franken served in the US Senate with some of them. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Heidi Heitkamp have guested on the podcast. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Chris Coons have also appeared. Franken also has a moving interview with Rep. Jamie Raskin. The politician lost his son to suicide. The host also talks to political writers, like author Dahlia Lithwick, a frequent guest. The Washington Post's Dana Milbank appears as well. The guests speak about politics, of course. But they also discuss more personal issues, including their lives and interests.

And this show has a lot more than political guests, too. Franken is a big Grateful Dead fan. So he interviews NBA legend Bill Walton, a fellow Deadhead, as they talk about their favorite band. They also talk about Walton's struggles with back issues. There is also a lot of laughter on The Al Franken Podcast. Past guests include Martin Short, David Letterman, and Patton Oswalt. Dana Carvey and Jim Gaffigan have also made people laugh on the show.

Each episode of The Al Franken Podcast lasts between 30 minutes and an hour long. New episodes come out once a week. This is a fun listen for both fans of politics and comedy.
